  • Patent number: 10391213
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for depleting platelets from blood. The system includes a multi-stage blood separation chamber in which blood is separated into red blood cells and platelet-rich plasma. The platelet-rich plasma is conveyed from a first stage of the chamber to a second stage, where it is separated into platelets and platelet-poor plasma. The platelet-poor plasma is conveyed out of the chamber while the platelets are allowed to accumulate in the second stage of the chamber. When a controller of the system has determined that the maximum chamber capacity of platelets has been accumulated in the second stage of the chamber, the platelets are conveyed out of the chamber to a waste container. The cycle of separating blood into its components, accumulating platelets in the chamber, and then flushing the platelets from the chamber is repeated until a target platelet concentration of the blood is achieved.

  • Patent number: 10391224
Abstract: An extracorporeal blood circulation system reduces the risk of generation of air bubbles entering the circulation circuit associated with placement of a pressure sensor that detects a patient's blood pressure at a blood removal line. Instead of directly measuring pressure at the blood removal line where suction exists, an intermediate part pressure sensor detects pressure between a centrifugal pump and an oxygenator. A controller identifies a discharge pressure specific to the centrifugal pump based on a rotation speed of the pump and a blood flow rate. The discharge pressure and the intermediate pressure values are combined to estimate the pressure at the blood removal line.

Abstract: A method of managing use of an insulin infusion device is presented here. The method identifies bolus calculator event data from glucose data for a user of the infusion device. The bolus calculator event data corresponds to use of a bolus calculator that calculates bolus dosage recommendations based on a user entered carbohydrate consumption value, a user entered current blood glucose value, a user specific carbohydrate ratio value, and a user specific insulin sensitivity value. The method filters the bolus calculator event data to remove glucose data associated with certain conditions, and analyzes the filtered data to detect an event occurrence that is indicative of potential maladjustment of the carbohydrate ratio value or the insulin sensitivity value. The method outputs a recommendation to adjust the carbohydrate ratio value or the insulin sensitivity value, based on characteristics of the detected event occurrence.

Abstract: An epinephrine auto-injector use activated device detects and responds to usage of the auto-injector. The resulting use activated device includes an actuator for manual generation of an injection force, as by a patient's hand, and a medicinal reservoir or vial for storing a quantity of medication for injection. A plunger is responsive to the actuator for displacing the medication in the medicinal reservoir, and a needle in fluidic communication with the medicinal reservoir defines a syringe for transporting the displaced medication through an aperture in a distal end of the needle. An electrical coupling, switch or sensor is responsive to movement of the actuator for initiating an alert signal. The alert signal is configured for transmission to a first responder in anticipation of an exigent response for further medical attention, in which the movement corresponds to plunger travel for dispensing the medication in the medicinal reservoir.
