Abstract: A device and method for predictably and controlling the collapsing of a collapsible and expandable stent for subsequent translation through a delivery sheath lumen to an anatomical target such as a heart valve or intravascular location for expansion and implantation. The loading device defines in inner lumen comprising a successively decreasing, from the proximal to the distal direction, inner diameter alternating between two sections of decreasing diameter and two sections of constant diameter until reaching the inner diameter of the delivery sheath. A fluid-filled reservoir is provided at the proximal end of the loading device that is configured to provide moisture or wetting for materials associated with or attached to the stent that require moisture retention. Thus, as the stent is being collapsed with the loading device, at least a portion of the stent may be immersed in the fluid reservoir to preserve the subject material.

Abstract: An interbody implant comprises one or more elongate members that have superior and inferior surfaces with a height, and medial and lateral surfaces having a width. The height is set so the implant fits into the intervertebral space. The width is less than the height. The interbody implant has a first configuration, a second configuration, and a third configuration. The interbody implant is inserted into the intervertebral space in the first configuration such that medial and lateral surfaces contact the vertebral bodies, and the interbody implant is then actuated into the second configuration such that superior and inferior surfaces engage the vertebral bodies. Actuation of the implant from the first configuration to the second configuration distracts the vertebral bodies. The implant is actuated into the third configuration where the width of the implant is greater than width of the implant in the first or the second configuration.

Abstract: This invention concerns an artificial intervertebral disc for installation in an intervertebral space between adjacent vertebral bodies. The artificial intervertebral disc prosthesis comprises an upper plate, a lower plate and a mobile core element, which is, in use, located between the upper and lower plates. The mobile core element includes a first contoured surface that has a flexion/extension radius that is larger by a determined amount than the radius of its second contoured surface that results in an instantaneous centre of rotation below the midline of the intervertebral disc space, thereby approximating the typical instantaneous centre of rotation of a natural disc. The first contoured surface of the mobile core element has a lateral bending radius that is unequal to the value of the flexion/extension radius, thereby allowing the mobile core element to self-centre on the second surface of the upper plate when under preload.

Abstract: A mouthpiece having particular suitability for cooling oral tissue of a patient undergoing chemotherapy or other medical treatments in which reducing oral cavity temperature is beneficial. The mouthpiece includes a cooling medium contained within the top element and the bottom element and able to retain a cooling environment within the mouth, preferably sufficient to reduce capillary blood flow to the patient's mouth. In one embodiment, an external chamber extends from the front of the mouthpiece to house a cooling medium. A bladder is positioned inside the external chamber for storing a solution having a freezing temperature above the freezing point temperature of the cooling medium to assist in cooling the cooling medium. At least one breathing tube extends through the external chamber to permit a patient to breathe through the mouth when the mouthpiece is emplaced within the mouth in the operative close-fitting relationship.

Abstract: Provided is a cooling tool that keeps a cooling object cold by utilizing the latent heat of a cold storage material and can visualize the physical condition of the cooling tool, i.e., can indicate whether the use condition of the cooling tool is appropriate. For example, when leakage of the cold storage material occurs, the cooling tool indicates the leakage of the cold storage material and shows whether the temperature is appropriate for keeping the cooling object cold. The cooling tool keeps the cooling object cold by utilizing the latent heat of a freezable material and includes: the freezable material that undergoes phase change at a specific temperature; a cold storage layer including a first container portion that contains the freezable material; and a condition indicator that shows the physical condition of the freezable material.

Abstract: An ocular protection device and treatment methods are disclosed. The device has a corneal shield with an attached handle. The handle may be used to move the corneal shield to better protect the eye from various treatment modalities. The handle may also be used to place tension on the eyelid to counteract the forces imposed by a treatment handpiece. A procedure for treating the eye is disclosed where multiple passes with a treatment handpiece cause a gradual increase in the temperature of an eyelid up to a treatment temperature. Once the treatment temperature has been met, occlusions in the Meibomian glands of the eyelid may be expressed. The procedure may be repeated recursively until a desired level of expression has been achieved.

Abstract: An ophthalmic laser procedure for forming a lenticule in a cornea and extracting the lenticule from the cornea to accomplish vision correction. An ophthalmic laser system is used to form top and bottom lenticule incisions defining a lenticule in between, and further to form top and/or bottom entry cuts that respectively end unambiguously near the top or bottom lenticule surface. The bottom entry cut intersects both the top and bottom lenticule incisions but ends near the bottom lenticule incision. The entry cuts allow the surgeon to insert a surgical tool which reaches the intended top or bottom lenticule surface without ambiguity. The lenticule has an optical zone in the center that defines the optical power of the lenticule, and a transition zone in the periphery, where the end points of the entry cuts are located in the transition zone.
