Abstract: A desalination device includes a container, first and second electrodes, an anion exchange membrane (AEM), and a power source. The container contains saline water that has an elevated concentration of dissolved salts. The AEM separates the container into first and second compartments into which the first and second electrodes, respectively, are arranged. The AEM has a continuous porous structure and a plurality of negatively-charged oxygen functional groups coupled to the porous structure. The power source is configured to selectively apply a voltage to one of the first and second electrodes. The AEM has a selective permeability when the voltage is applied such that cations in the saline water solution have a first diffusion rate d1 therethrough and anions in the saline water solution have a second diffusion rate d2 therethrough. The first diffusion rate d1 is less than the second diffusion rate d2 and greater than or equal to zero.

Abstract: A nonpowered mixing and coagulation basin is provided, which generates turbulences of at least two kinds inside the mixing and coagulation basin to which the raw water flows so that foreign matters contained in the raw water come into contact with each other while circulating by a water flow to be coagulated into a predetermined size, and a dissolved air floatation device using the same. The nonpowered mixing and coagulation basin has multiple stages with different packing materials and packing densities to form turbulent flows inside the raw water and control a flow speed, thereby uniformly mixing raw water and coagulant to enhance coagulation efficiency. The nonpowered mixing and coagulation basin simultaneously carries out mixing and coagulation at the front end part of the water treatment system, reduces equipment expenses by having no electric motor and agitator, and reduces power consumption because it does not use any power unit.

Abstract: A method of boron-contained wastewater treatment includes the following steps. Pretreatment: Mix a boron-contained wastewater with hydrogen peroxide for reaction at pH 8-12. Precipitation: Add n moles of barium compound into the pretreated boron-contained wastewater to provide perborate precipitation at pH 8.5-12. The number n is obtained from an equation of n=([B]*a+[NO3]*0.01+[F]*0.01+[CO3]*1+[SO4]*1)*V wherein a is ranged from 0.6-0.9. [B], [NO3], [F], [CO3], and [SO4] are molarities of boron, nitrate ion, fluoride ion, carbonate ion, and sulfate ion of the boron-container wastewater. V is the volume of the boron-container wastewater. A fluidized bed reactor is used.

Together with other invented elements as well as standard components, the system is fully scalable, modular, and allows production and collection of gases under pressure. It can be built in many shapes, such as the embodied tubular shape. The design allows operation on unstable ground, for example on ships. Flow of electrolyte can be regulated and directed in cascaded reactions by opening and closing the compartments of the outer or the inner electrodes using the provided electrode holders. The redox conditions inside the system can be controlled using off-the-shelf power supplies which are controlled using the provided algorithm. Gas collection can be regulated based on the level of liquid inside the system using the provided float switches or conductivity probes even as the system is moving or operated under zero-gravity conditions.

Abstract: A conventional activated sludge wastewater treatment plant is upgraded by adding one or more of a membrane filtration unit, a membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) unit, and a screen. The membrane filtration unit is added between a process tank and the secondary clarifier. The membrane filtration unit extracts treated effluent at a rate up to 25% of the influent flow rate. The plant is not converted into a membrane bioreactor (MBR) since the MLSS concentration is still less than 4,000 mg/L. The membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) unit is added to a process tank of the plant and provides attached growth biological treatment. The screen extracts solids from water flowing to the process tanks. When optionally used in combination, the added units and processes increase the capacity of the primary separation, biological processing and secondary separation functions of the plant. The influent flow rate may be increased.
