Abstract: Microfluidic devices having an electrowetting configuration and an optimized droplet actuation surface are provided for processing biological cells, e.g., for use in nucleic acid library preparation and/or synthesis (including amplification). The devices include a dielectric layer, a hydrophobic layer covalently bonded to the dielectric layer, and a first electrode. Methods of nucleic acid library preparation and/or synthesis can involve providing reagents to cells or nucleic acids by merging appropriate droplets on a droplet actuation surface within a water-immiscible organic liquid and can be performed in the presence of appropriate surfactants. The hydrophobic layer features self-associating molecules covalently bonded to a surface of the dielectric layer in a manner that produces a densely-packed monolayer that resists intercalation and or penetration by polar molecules or species.

Abstract: Temperature-controllable reagent cartridges and systems for controlling the temperature in such reagent cartridges are provided. An example such system may include a reagent cartridge having reagent reservoirs located at least in part within an interior plenum volume of a cartridge housing. In such an example system, each reagent reservoir may be defined, in part, by a sidewall, and a first reagent reservoir may be spaced apart from a second reagent reservoir to form a fluid flow passage between corresponding sidewalls thereof. A fluid inlet through the cartridge housing may be provided that fluidically connects the interior plenum volume with a fluid supply port of a temperature control system of an analysis instrument when the reagent cartridge is received by the analysis instrument; a fluid outlet through the cartridge housing that fluidically connects the interior plenum volume with a fluid return port of the temperature control system may also be provided.

Abstract: An auto-feed paper shredder is configured for placement below the surface of a desk. The auto-feeder consists of a drawer located on the front surface of the shredder. This drawer is slid out to insert a stack of documents to be shredded. When the door is slid back into the shredder and the shredding system is activated, feed rollers draw sheets of paper either from the top or the bottom surface of the stack and feed the sheets into a conventional paper shredding mechanism. An input slot is provided to insert single sheets of paper when the auto-feeder is not being used.

Abstract: This invention relates to the static or continuous magnetic separation of specific entities from mixtures where the separation of target entities is clone in a one-step process. It is universally applicable to the harvest or removal of such entities for processing of biological molecules, cells of all types, virus particles, and the like, and for small- to large-scale separations of the same. By manipulation of the scientific principles that underlie this invention, specific targets can be conveniently captured for analysis, harvested or subjected to further processing on a collection surface free of bystander components. The principles employed and the methods disclosed completely obviate the need for washing of targeted entities such as cycles of resuspension and magnetic separation for removal of contaminating substances in the case of static separation or complex cycles of sample introduction and harvest to perform continuous processing.
