Abstract: In a corneal measurement system, an optical element focuses an excitation light to an area of corneal tissue at a selected depth. In response, a fluorescing agent applied to the cornea generates a fluorescence emission. An aperture of a pinhole structure selectively transmits the fluorescence emission from the area of corneal tissue at the selected depth. A detector captures the selected fluorescence emission transmitted by the aperture and communicates information relating to a measurement of the selected fluorescence emission captured by the detector. A controller receives the information from the detector and determines a measurement of the fluorescing agent in the area of corneal tissue at the selected depth. The system may include a scan mechanism that causes the optical element to scan the cornea at a plurality of depths, and the controller may determine a measurement of the fluorescing agent in the cornea as a function of depth.

Abstract: A measuring method for determining an astigmatism of an eye with a confocal refractometer providing a measurement beam path, in which an optical arrangement having an adaptive optical component with a variable cylinder power and a variable cylindrical axis position is arranged to compensate for an astigmatism of the eye in the wavefront of the measurement beam path. In a first measurement, the cylinder power of the adaptive optical component for a first fixed cylindrical axis position of the adaptive optical component is varied until the measured intensity becomes maximal. In a second measurement, the cylinder power of the adaptive optical component for a second fixed axis position—different than the first—of the adaptive optical component is varied until the measured intensity is maximal. The power and axis position of the astigmatism of the eye are determined from first and second measurement values.

Abstract: The present disclosure facilitates capture of biosignal such as biopotential signals in microvolts, or sub-microvolts, resolutions that are at, or significantly below, the noise-floor of conventional electrocardiographic and biosignal acquisition instruments. In some embodiments, the exemplified system disclosed herein facilitates the acquisition and recording of wide-band phase gradient signals (e.g., wide-band cardiac phase gradient signals, wide-band cerebral phase gradient signals) that are simultaneously sampled, in some embodiments, having a temporal skew less than about 1 ?s, and in other embodiments, having a temporal skew not more than about 10 femtoseconds. Notably, the exemplified system minimizes non-linear distortions (e.g., those that can be introduced via certain filters) in the acquired wide-band phase gradient signal so as to not affect the information therein.

Abstract: A catheter adapted or high density mapping and/or ablation of tissue surface has a distal electrode matrix having a plurality of spines arranged in parallel configuration on which a multitude of electrodes are carried in a grid formation for providing uniformity and predictability in electrode placement on the tissue surface. The matrix can be dragged against the tissue surface upon deflection (and/or release of the deflection) of the catheter. The spines generally maintain their parallel configuration and the multitude of electrodes generally maintain their predetermined relative spacing in the grid formation as the matrix is dragged across the tissue surface in providing very high density mapping signals. The spines may have free distal ends, or distal ends that are joined to form loops for maintaining the spines in parallel configuration.

Abstract: Asthma creates inflation of the epithelial cells in the airway of a patient. Inflammation causes epithelial cells to increase the production of nitric oxide far above the normally low levels. Therefore, clinicians can detect biomarkers of Asthma and other maladies by measuring the concentration of exhaled nitric oxide (“eNO”) for fractional exhaled nitric oxide (“FeNO”). However, current systems require the patient to exhale at a constant rate to estimate the concentration eNO. This rough approximation may under or overestimate the FeNO, which can cause misdiagnosis. Accordingly, disclosed are systems and methods to determine the amount of nitric oxide exhaled that compensate for a variable flow rate of exhaling, and do not assume a constant flow rate.
