Patent number: 10834436Abstract: Particular embodiments provide a system to determine ad segments in a video asset to enable subsequent ad replacement in video programs. The system is included in a multiple service operator (MSO) system that broadcasts video programs via a broadcast schedule. The MSO may not know the location of the ad segments in the video asset. To determine the ad segments, the MSO uses a classifier to classify video program segments and advertisements in the video asset. The classifier may be integrated with an nDVR system. By integrating with the nDVR system, particular embodiments may determine user behavior information, such as trick play commands, from the nDVR system. The classifier may use the user behavior information to detect ad segments in the video asset. In one embodiment, the classifier may fuse outputs from different detectors to detect and validate ad segments in the video program.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 2015Date of Patent: November 10, 2020Assignee: ARRIS Enterprises LLCInventors: Alfonso Martinez Smith, Benedito J. Patent number: 10834437Abstract: An online system receives a request for a video to be presented by the online system to a target user. The online system determines whether to insert secondary content into the video. For such a determination, the online system identifies a position in the video for inserting secondary content. Further, the online system determines a loss score and a gain score. The loss score measures a loss of interaction by the target user if the secondary content were inserted. The gain score includes a monetary compensation to be received by the online system for inserting the secondary content at the identified position. The online system compares the loss score and the gain score. Based on the gain score offsetting the loss score, the online systems modifies the video by inserting the secondary content at the identified position and provides the modified video for display to the target user.Type: GrantFiled: December 12, 2017Date of Patent: November 10, 2020Assignee: FACEBOOK, INC.Inventors: Shuo Li, Eric Hsin-Chun Huang, Abhishek Bapna

Patent number: 10834439Abstract: Systems and methods are described to address shortcomings in conventional systems by correcting an erroneous term in on-screen caption text for a media asset. In some aspects, the systems and methods identify the erroneous term in a text segment of the on-screen caption text, and identify one or more video frames of the media asset corresponding to the text segment. The systems and methods further identify a contextual term related to the erroneous term from the one or more video frames. By accessing a knowledge graph, the systems and methods identify a candidate correction based on the contextual term and a portion of the text segment. Lastly, the systems and methods replaces the erroneous term with the candidate correction.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 2016Date of Patent: November 10, 2020Assignee: Rovi Guides, Inc.Inventors: Ajay Kumar Gupta, Abhijit Satchidanand Savarkar

Patent number: 10834440Abstract: Disclosed herein are systems, methods, and non-transitory computer-readable storage media for encoding media content based on network quality of service parameters. A system configured to practice the method determines quality of service parameters for a network between a media server and a media client. The system selects an encoder based on a list of decoders available at the media client and the quality of service parameters, and encodes at least a portion of the media via the encoder. The system can further determine settings for the encoder based on a media type, and encode the media via the encoder according to the settings. The system can detect when the media client moves to a new network, detect new quality of service parameters, and select a new encoder based on the list of decoders available at the media client, the media type, and the new quality of service parameters.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 2018Date of Patent: November 10, 2020Assignee: AT&T INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY I, L.P.Inventors: Todd Andrew Fryer, David Irvin, Nick Nicas

Patent number: 10834442Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for altering or otherwise obscuring a progress bar to prevent spoilers in a media asset. A media asset is generated for display and an input is detected from a user during playback of the media asset. A determination is made whether the input comprises a command to display a progress bar. In the affirmative, a determination regarding a current point of playback of the media asset and the type of segment is made. An entry is retrieved from a database that maps the type of segment to a range of time. A determination is made whether the remaining time of the media asset is within the range of time. In the affirmative, a determination whether displaying the progress bar would spoil the media asset is made. In response to determining that displaying the progress bar would spoil the media asset, the progress bar is refrained from generating display.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 2019Date of Patent: November 10, 2020Assignee: Rovi Guides, Inc.Inventors: Thomas Kang-Po Yan, Hong-Qi Jia, Peter Boonstra, Kerui Chen

Patent number: 10834444Abstract: Convenience in a decoding process on a receiver side for when a predetermined number of high-quality-format image data is transmitted together with basic-format image data is achieved. A base stream including, as an access unit, encoded image data for each picture of basic-format image data, and a predetermined number of enhanced streams, each including, as an access unit, encoded image data for each picture of high-quality-format image data are generated. Here, a predictive coding process is performed on image data in high-quality format by referring to the image data in basic format or image data in another high-quality format, by which an enhanced stream is generated. Then, information indicating decoding order is added to each access unit of the enhanced streams. A container in a predetermined format that includes the base stream and the predetermined number of enhanced streams is transmitted.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 2016Date of Patent: November 10, 2020Assignee: SONY CORPORATIONInventor: Ikuo Tsukagoshi

Patent number: 10834445Abstract: Extended reality presentations (e.g., augmented reality, augmented virtuality, and virtual reality) are often presented as multimodal experiences involving a combination of visual, audio, and haptic input and output channels. Users who have a deficit in one modality may consume other channels of the extended reality presentation, but the absence of the deficit modality may render the extended reality presentation incomplete or incomprehensible. Instead, for users with a deficit in a source modality, a modality may be identified as an annotation modality in which the user does not have a deficit. An annotation set of annotations in the annotation modality may be generated that respectively describe an event arising in a source channel in the source modality. The annotation set may be presented to the user (either supplementing the source channel or in lieu of the source channel), thereby adapting the extended reality presentation to the physiological capabilities of the user.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 2018Date of Patent: November 10, 2020Assignee: Oath Inc.Inventor: Lawrence Roy Goldberg

Patent number: 10834447Abstract: A satellite digital broadcast systems transmits signals from a geosynchronous satellite to a plurality of geographically dispersed receivers. Each receiver measures a receive signal level and transmits a value representing the level to a data center. The data center analyses data received from a plurality of receivers in order to determine a size, shape, and velocity of propagation of an obstruction. The data center then predicts which receivers will experience signal disruptions based on the obstruction and the velocity of propagation of the obstruction. The data center transmits instructions to receivers that will be affected by the obstruction.Type: GrantFiled: August 8, 2019Date of Patent: November 10, 2020Assignee: AT&T INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY I, L.P.Inventors: Nicholas Nicas, Todd Andrew Fryer, Douglas Medina

Patent number: 10834472Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for delivering programming content to vehicles (e.g., seagoing vessels) in a cost-effective manner. In some embodiments, programming content may be delivered to vehicles over previously deployed networks (e.g., satellite networks), using excess network capacity which may not otherwise be used to deliver data. By opportunistically employing excess network capacity (e.g., as the capacity becomes available), data constituting programming content may be delivered to vehicles over a period of time, such as via multicast transmission. A vehicle may store received data on one or more onboard servers. After an item of programming content has been received, the item may be made accessible to the vehicle's crew and/or passengers, such as by streaming the item to one or more suitably configured playback devices. Content may be served to playback devices “on demand” and/or according to a programming schedule.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 2019Date of Patent: November 10, 2020Assignee: KVH Industries, Inc.Inventors: Martin A.
