Abstract: A concentric ring electrode (CRE) is provided that can sense characteristics of an electric potential, such as its Laplacian, more accurately than previous systems. The disclosed system and methods can optimize estimates of the Laplacian based on potentials measured by the CRE's electrodes, and can optimize the geometry of the CRE, in particular the ring electrodes' radii. Given the CRE's geometrical configuration, the system estimates the Laplacian's dependence on the measured potentials by computing a null space of a matrix associated with a series expansion of the potential. The system determines coefficients for the dependence, wherein a first coefficient is between ?10 and 10 times, or between ?6.5 and ?7.5 times, a second coefficient. The system can optimize ranges for the radii by canceling at least one truncation term of the series expansion, estimating a higher-order truncation term as a function of the radii, and minimizing this estimated function.

Abstract: Disclosed is a postprandial glucose-measuring device for preventing the development of or reversing T2D. Included are methods for using the device as well as better use for invasive and noninvasive glucose meters. Further disclosed are novel exercise-sensitizing compositions useful for managing blood glucose levels in Type-2 diabetics with minimal risk of hypoglycemia. The disclosed glucose meters allow a user to also measure exercise and meal size—all with relatively instant feedback—more effectively than having to track the complexity posed by labels, glycemic index and calories. Also disclosed is integration of glucose-measuring devices with smartphones and health monitoring technology to make possible safe and effective interpretation of postprandial glucose readings by a patient to control or reverse Type-2 diabetes.

Abstract: Systems, devices, and methods are provided for reducing a risk of unintentional falls in a subject that is at risk for falls. The device includes a sensor and a stimulator. The sensor is configured to be positioned adjacent a body portion of the user that changes orientation when the user sits and stands. The sensor is also configured to emit an activation signal when the user stands and to emit a deactivation signal when the user sits or lies down. The stimulator is in communication with the sensor and is configured to be positioned adjacent one of a calf and a lower back of the user. The stimulator is configured to vibrate at a frequency that stimulates proprioceptors of the user without inducing muscle contractions upon receipt of the activation signal from the sensor and to cease vibration upon receipt of the deactivation signal from the sensor.

Abstract: Methods and devices provide physiological movement detection, such as breathing, cardiac and/or gross body motion, with active sound generation using electronic processing device(s). The processor may control producing, via a speaker coupled to the processor, a sound signal in a user's vicinity. The processor may control sensing, via a microphone coupled to the processor, a reflected sound signal. This reflected sound signal is a reflection of the sound signal from the vicinity or user. The processor may process the reflected sound, such as by a demodulation technique. The sound signal may be produced as a dual tone frequency modulation continuous wave signal. Evaluation of detected movement information may determine sleep states or scoring, fatigue indications, subject recognition, chronic disease monitoring/prediction, and other output parameters.

Abstract: A method and device for detecting a sleep state by heart-rate and movement data. By neural network software, a sleep state is detected using as input data movement data (move_count) and data derived from heart-rate data and/or data derived from inter-beat interval data such as (MAD) and respiration data (RESP). At least a portion of the variables (HRD, MHR, MAD, Resp, GRD) derived from the heart-rate data/inter-beat interval data are further modified by one, most preferably 2-4, artificial average functions and the cumulative sleep time is one input datum.

Abstract: Devices are provided to automatically inject drugs or other payloads into or beneath skin. These devices include an injector configured to drive a hollow needle into the skin and subsequently to deliver the payload through the hollow needle. Applied suction acts to draw blood from the puncture formed in the skin through the hollow needle, into the device, and to a sensor, blood storage element, or other payload. In some examples, the blood is drawn through the hollow needle when the hollow needle is penetrating the skin. In some examples, these devices are additionally configured to retract the hollow needle from the skin and/or to perform some other functions. These devices can be wearable and configured to automatically access blood or deliver a payload into skin, for example, to operate at one or more points in time while a wearer of a device is sleeping.

Abstract: A method for determining the hydration status of a person prompts the person to breathe while in a first postural position during which the method measures a first heart rate variability (HRV) value. The person is prompted to change to a second postural position, and the method measures a second HRV value. A difference between the first HRV value and the second HRV value is a daily score. The daily score is subtracted from a baseline to obtain a hydration score. In certain embodiments, the person is requested to respond to a plurality of subjective questions. The method processes the subjective responses and the daily score to determine whether the person is adequately hydrated. In certain embodiments of the method, the person is requested to identify the color of the person's urine. The identified color is processed with the daily score and the subjective responses to determine hydration.
