Abstract: Two biomarkers are provided for obstructive apnea. A first biomarker determines amplitude and timing of inspiratory efforts from a bioelectric signal. The respiratory rate is compared with a normal pre-detection rate, and the amplitude of the effort is compared with a normal amplitude. The obstructive apnea is likely present if a series of inspiratory efforts are above a normal amplitude and with increasing amplitude, but at a normal rate. A second biomarker determines heart rate and respiratory rate. A normal lower threshold for heartbeat interval is established, and if subthreshold events occur (short RR intervals), a commencement time for each sequence of subthreshold events is compared for a respiratory rate-normalized window. If the number of subthreshold events exceeds a minimum for the window, obstructive apnea is likely present.

Abstract: This disclosure relates to a method for characterizing activation of an anatomical tissue subjected to contraction, aiming at providing a characterization of the contraction itself in a quantitative manner which is accurate and repeatable. The invention proposes an analysis of the activation of the anatomical structure based on instantaneous spectral contents of an activity signal from which an identification of peaks of dominant frequency characterizing the contraction throughout the anatomical tissue results. An evolution of a spatial distribution of peaks of dominant frequency throughout the anatomical tissue over time can also be monitored. The disclosure finds particular advantageous applications in provision of a mapping of activation of the anatomical tissue in order to identify a possible dysfunction, such as an arrhythmia in a cardiac tissue.

Abstract: Provided is a method for locating an epilepsy seizure onset zone and prediction of seizure outcome including receiving interictal electroencephalographs from two or more points in a patient's cerebral cortex. The interictal electroencephalographs are used to determine directional information flow values which indicate dominant information flow from a non-seizure zone to a seizure onset zone. The directional informational flow values may be input into a classification model trained to predict whether the two or more points in the patient's cerebral cortex are a seizure onset zone and/or classify the patient's predicted post-treatment seizure outcome after epilepsy treatment based on the directional information flow values. An output from the classification model may indicate a location of seizure onset zone in the patient's cerebral cortex and/or the patient's predicted post-treatment seizure outcome after epilepsy treatment. Systems and computer program products are also provided.

Abstract: The technology involves scaffold structures used for in-ear sensor systems. Such systems that can perform biometric signal detection or act as a human-computer interface. Scaffolding arrangements minimize the amount of material placed in the ear while providing a secure fitting device that can be worn for hours, days or longer in order to provide maximal benefit to the wearer. The scaffolding includes a “C”-shaped arcuate curvature for at least part of the housing. This configuration can act as a natural leaf spring to help maintain the housing in contact with different points along the ear. Sensors are located along various points of the scaffolding for use in different diagnostic situations. Different components of an on-board sensor input and processing system can be distributed along different parts of the scaffolding. Such structures beneficially minimize ambient sound occlusion and avoid the need of an exterior strap or clip worn around the ear.

An example photoacoustic monitoring device includes a light-guiding component to guide light energy toward tissue to cause the light energy to be absorbed by the tissue; an ultrasound transmission component to transmit acoustic energy toward the tissue to cause a biological response from the tissue; and a sensing component to perform one or more of ultrasound or photoacoustic imaging to sense the biological response from the tissue and permit a status of the tissue to be determined. In some implementations, the biological response is sensed based on the light energy absorbed by the tissue during the biological response caused by the acoustic energy transmitted toward the tissue.

Abstract: Methods, apparatuses, systems, and implementations for inductive heating of a foreign metallic implant are disclosed. A foreign metallic implant may be heated via AMF pulses to ensure that the surface of the foreign metallic implant heats in a uniform manner. As the surface temperature of the foreign metallic implant rises, acoustic signatures may be detected by acoustic sensors that may indicate that tissue may be heating to an undesirable level approaching a boiling point. Once these acoustic signatures are detected, the AMF pulses may be shut off for a time period to allow the surface temperature of the implant to cool before applying additional AMF pulses. In this manner, the surface temperature of a foreign metallic implant may be uniformly heated to a temperature adequate to treat bacterial biofilm buildup on the surface of the foreign metallic implant without damaging surrounding tissue.
