Abstract: A process for producing hydroxyalkanoate copolymers, which comprises: (i) pre-treating a sucrose-containing feedstock in an acidic solution; (ii) feeding the pre-treated feedstock into a bioreactor containing polyhydroxyalkanoate producing microbial cells; (iii) cultivating the polyhydroxyalkanoate producing microbial cells to form a cell mass containing the hydroxyalkanoate copolymers; (iv) recovering the hydroxyalkanoate copolymers from the cell mass. The pre-treating step has the main function of hydrolyzing sucrose into glucose and fructose, which in turn are converted into 4-ketovaleric acid to give a mixture of mono-saccharides and organic precursors for microbial synthesis of hydroxyalkanoate copolymers, and particularly of PHBVV ter-polymers. Complex and expensive purification processes of the substrates obtained from the pre-treating step are not needed. The solutions can be directly used as the feeding solutions for microbial PHA biosynthesis.

  • Patent number: 8919246
Abstract: The waste compactor comprises a housing having an inclined wall in the upper part thereof. A motor on the upper wall drives a helical screw on the lower side of the inclined wall which converges conically downwardly with a decreasing pitch. A lower hopper extending downwardly from the inclined wall below the helical screw forms a funnel and is opened above to an inlet area. The inlet area receives waste material to be compacted, which material descends into the area of the helical screw. A lower more narrow end of the helical screw is located in a conduit which is slightly wider than the lower end of the helical screw and converges downwardly to a constriction at its lower end. Waste material is compacted by downward movement under the action of the helical screw and by being forced through the conduit. The lower hopper has drainage holes through which liquid can drain, by gravity, and a collector is positioned to collect the liquid passing through the drainage holes.

Abstract: The invention concerns a device for pressing packs or bulk containers for recuperating liquids, in particular milk or fruit juice, which they contain. The inventive device is essentially characterised in that it comprises, in combination, a support plate (3), whereon are set the packs to be pressed (4), adapted to take up a high position for pressing the stacked packs (4) and a low position for pressuring the containers; a pressing plate (1), driven in a vertical reciprocating movement, adapted to press said packs or containers and means (2) adapted to delimit, with the plate (1) and the plate (3), a closed volume during the entire pressing phase. The means 82) is a sliding skirt, urged to be supported on the plate (3) when the packs (4) are pressed and a tank, delimited in its base by the plate (3), when the bulk containers are pressed.

Abstract: Catering in a transport vehicle like an aircraft involves collecting mixed waste including solids (e.g. left-over food portions, food wastes, napkins, disposable cutlery) and liquids (e.g. beverage rests), without separation. These wastes are disposed of into an apparatus including a receiving container with a filter and separating element at the bottom, a waste shaft leading into the container, a press arrangement with flap doors, pressure pistons which press the press arrangement and flap doors onto the waste in the container to compact the waste, and a drain and coupling system at the bottom of the container. As the waste is compacted, liquids drain down through the filter, oils and fats are removed by the separating element, and non-oily liquids are removed through the coupling system to the vacuum disposal system or the gray water drain line of the vehicle. A control unit controls the overall operation.

Abstract: A method of measuring the liquid retention of absorbent articles (20) of the kind that includes an absorbent body having a top side which lies proximal to the wearer's skin when the article is worn, and a bottom side which is covered by a liquid-impermeable backing sheet, wherein the method comprises the steps of applying a determined amount of liquid to a region on the top side of the article, urging a pressure body (1) against a region of the top side of the article with a given force, and collecting and measuring the amount of liquid pressed out from the top side of the article. The force with which the pressure body (1) is pressed against the top side of the article, is set selectively on a device (2-4) for pressing the pressure body against the top side of the article (20), and the liquid pressed from the top side of the article is transported to a measuring vessel (15) with the aid of sub-pressure.

  • Patent number: 6530312
Abstract: A press has two pressure levers connected with pressure plates which can be moved against one another by a driving motor. A control device acts upon the driving motor and permits different sequences of movement of the pressure levers during the pressing operation according to different operating programs. An operating program is provided for crushing cans and containers and another operating program is provided for extracting juice. In order to avoid faulty operations, the pressure plates are constructed for receiving different mounts for the various operating modes. At least one pressure plate is connected with a sensor which detects the type of mount and reports it to the control device. Despite an expanded application range, the operating of the press is simple because, for starting both pressing operations, the equipment operator actuates only one starting switch, the selecting of the operating programs taking place automatically, which ensures a high safety standard.

  • Patent number: 5934188
Abstract: An oilseed press of the present invention is adapted to extract oil from oilseeds. The oilseed press includes a base plate having a raised surface with straight and tapered edges. A cylindrical sleeve also has a tapered edge at one end and is adapted to slide over the raised portion of the base plate forming a tight fit between the tapered portions and forming a gap between the straight edge and the sleeve. A plunger is adapted to slide within the sleeve. By applying pressure to the plunger the oilseeds are crushed between the plunger and the raised surface of the base plate. Oil collects within the gap and exits the gap through a notch formed in the tapered surface where it collects in a well. The pressure is applied by a linear actuator having a rubber bumper assembly. When the clutch of the linear actuator begins to slip, the bumper assembly maintains a high pressure on the plunger.

  • Patent number: 5857407
Abstract: An oil filter crusher includes an elongated triangular frame, a threaded drive screw, and a ram assembly, but does not include any actuator for driving the screw. Rather, a first end of the drive screw has a drive head to which a user may couple a conventional wrench, such as a pneumatic impact wrench of the type commonly used in automotive service centers. A thrust bearing assembly couples the second end of the drive screw to the ram assembly. A threaded portion of the drive screw engages a threaded opening in a portion of the frame. The ram assembly thus moves in an axial direction in response to rotation of the drive screw with respect to the frame. Rotating the drive screw in one direction moves it toward the filter to be crushed, and rotating it in the opposite direction moves it away from the filter.

Abstract: A multi-slot closed type powerful garbage compression structure including a housing, an inner cylinder internally provided with guide plates and being inclined forwardly, and a push bar behind the inner cylinder. The housing is provided with four slots at a rear section adapted to receive garbage, and a garbage outlet at a front end, the outlet being provided with a slide plate, and a waste water receiving trough at a bottom side. When garbage is dumped into the housing via the slots, the push bar rotates to push the garbage into the inner cylinder which rotates to compress the garbage. When the garbage inside the inner cylinder is full, the push bar may prevent reverse flow of the garbage. By the use of both the push bar and the guide plates inside the inner cylinder, better compression effects are achievable to reduce garbage storage space and eliminate use of hydraulic cylinders and thrust devices.

Abstract: A press assembly includes a hydraulic cylinder assembly having first and second chambers and respective piston and rod assemblies therein. The rod of the second assembly is arranged to enter the first chamber and thereby raise the pressure therein. Initially, fluid flows into the first chamber, forcing the first rod to exert a force on a work object. When a predetermined pressure is reached within the cylinder, fluid is introduced to the second chamber, and causes the second rod to move into the first chamber, which raises or boosts the pressure in the first chamber.
