  • Patent number: 6123018
Abstract: A method and apparatus for extracting liquid from a liquid-containing slurry. In the preferred embodiment, the apparatus (10) includes a plurality of interconnected press assemblies (12), the outlet (82) of one press assembly (12) being connected to the inlet (92) of a successive press assembly (12). Each press assembly has a foraminous cylindrical container (14), and a two-part piston assembly (18) movable between extended and retracted positions within the foraminous container (14). During operation, a pump (90) continuously feeds slurry under pressure through the inlet of the first press assembly to cause liquid within the first stage slurry upstream of the two-part piston assembly (18) to be radially expressed through the foraminous container (14). After a suitable amount of liquid has been extracted from the first stage slurry, batch processing of the partially dewatered slurry will commence.

  • Patent number: 4451322
Abstract: The apparatus accepts dry stripped crude fiber such as straw or sugar cane wastes, coconut husks, or elephant grass, compacts them into a relatively dense sheet, and bonds a strong surfacing material such as a heavy paper to the faces and edges. The sheet, continuously flowing from the apparatus, is cut into standard lengths and the cut ends are capped with the same surfacing material. A precompactor near the end of an entrance chute into the apparatus uniformly predensifies the incoming fiber prior to its compaction by means of a ram. The ram is carried on roller bearings especially adapted to withstand the weight and other forces associated with the continuous movement of the ram. The compacted material is continuously propelled by the ram and enters a press, where heat and pressure produce a dimensionally stable sheet bonded together partially by natural resins released from the fibers by the heat, and partially by mechanical interlinking between fibers.

  • Patent number: 4125069
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a control circuit employing instantaneous and delayed action bistable switching elements for use in controlling the flow of refuse in a multiple channel, extrusion type briquetting or pelletizing system wherein the refuse is supplied from a conveyor to a common chute feeding a pair of extrusion-type compactors. A vane arrangement in the common chute is driven in a reciprocating cyclical manner to feed the refuse in an alternating manner to the compactors. The control circuit disclosed herein senses the cyclical action of the reciprocating vane and controls in turn the conveyor system which supplies refuse to the chute. Certain deviating actions of the vane system indicate conditions signalling an incipient jam in the system flow. The control circuit, in sensing such actions and in concomitantly interrupting the feed of refuse, corrects the feed rate to alleviate the potential jam-producing conditions.

  • Patent number: 4036124
Abstract: A sludge press wherein a piston is reciprocable along a horizontal path between a retracted position in the interior of a hopper and an extended position in which the piston is located in and at the front end of a barrel extending forwardly from and communicating with the hopper so that the piston thereby expels a slug of compacted sludge through the open front end of the barrel. The front end of the barrel can be sealed by the knife-like valve member of a gate valve during movement of the piston to retracted position. The front end face of the piston is surrounded by a cutting edge which cooperates with a complementary annular cutting edge at the rear end of the barrel to sever solid ingredients of sludge during penetration of the piston into the barrel. The cutting edge of the valve member cooperates with a complementary cutting edge surrounding an opening in the rear section of the housing of the valve.
