  • Patent number: 4533002
Abstract: In a device for gripping and lifting tamping tools or for holding raised tamping tools in a tamping machine, the individual tamping tools rods are clamped in abutments (2) by slideable clamping members (3). In the device for lifting tamping tools, a controllable working cylinder (6), connected to each abutment (2), raises and lowers the abutment (2). An additional non-controllable cylinder (5) is connected to the clamping member (3) which has cylinder chambers which are connected to a non-pressurized tank of working fluid. This cylinder (5) opposes the movement of the abutment (2) because of the volume displaced from the cylinder chambers. At the initiation of the lifting stroke, the clamping member (3) is pulled tightly into the abutment and thus the tamping tool rod is clamped and lifted along therewith. At the beginning of the lowering motion of the abutment (2), the clamping member is disengaged by the action of the cylinder (5), thus releasing the tamping tool (4).

  • Patent number: 4203359
Abstract: A hydraulic press arrangement which includes at least one top cross beam and one bottom cross beam with a press ram, displaceable by means of two cylinder-piston units supplied by at least one pressure medium source, being disposed between the top and bottom cross beams. Each cylinder-piston unit includes a cylinder arranged in the bottom cross beam and in the top cross beam with a piston being guided in each of the cylinders. Two pistons of a mutually associated cylinder-piston unit are connected by way of a piston rod to the press ram. With the arrangement of the cylinder-piston units as well as the controlling of the impingement and venting of cylinder chambers, a relaxation of forces acting on the press frame, due to a subsiding of forces acting in the press working space, is prevented.

  • Patent number: 4128402
Abstract: An apparatus for compacting coal in a pounding box to convert it into a cake usable in coke ovens has one or more punners which are each composed of an upright the lower end of which carries a pounding foot. At opposite sides of the respective upright are arranged a pair of engaging elements which are made to engage the upright and are then moved to an upper position, during which movement they take along the upright to raise the pounding foot above the coal in the pounding box. On reaching their upper position the engaging elements release the upright so that the punner can drop by gravity onto the coal in the box.

  • Patent number: 4111664
Abstract: A massive compacted coal charge body is made by pounding a particulate bed consisting of moist coal particles by a plurality of sequentially operated rams until the particulate bed is converted into a charge body the height of which exceeds its width by at least eleven times and the charge body having a specific density of at least 1.1 metric tons/m.sup.3. Each of the rams has a ram body and a ram rod extending upwardly from the ram body, the ram rod being engaged and clamped for joint lifting by one or a pair of lifting members. Each lifting member is pivotally mounted on a shaft and has an eccentric engaging surface which comes into engagement with the respective ram rod. When two lifting members are associated with each ram rod, both of them are pivoted in synchronism. In the upper position of the ram, each lifting member releases the respective ram rod to permit the respective ram to descend onto the particulate bed in a free gravitational fall.

  • Patent number: 4108610
Abstract: Coking coal is pounded into a compacted cake of substantially uniform density in a pounding box by means of a plurality of punners mounted on carriages which can move to-and-fro lengthwise of the box. The punners are alternately raised and then allowed to drop under the influence of gravity onto the coal in the box. The raising and dropping is so timed that at any time preferably the foot of only one punner per carriage is in contact with the coal in the box, so as to leave as much as possible of the coal surface area exposed.

  • Patent number: 4070962
Abstract: A refuse compactor having a container with a refuse compression space on one side of a pressure plate which is movable by atmospheric pressure, upon evacuation of the refuse space, in one direction through a compression stroke to compress refuse in the space. The pressure plate is movable in the opposite direction through a return stroke by either pressurizing of the refuse space or evacuation of a space, which may be a second refuse compression space, at the opposite side of the plate. The refuse compactor is adapted to be emptied by a conventional trash collection vehicle equipped with a trash bin elevating and inverting mechanism, e.g., a fork lift. The plate includes a wiper for prolonging the life of the pressure plate seal and the compactor includes a novel vacuum pump and valve system for operating the pressure plate.

  • Patent number: 4036124
Abstract: A sludge press wherein a piston is reciprocable along a horizontal path between a retracted position in the interior of a hopper and an extended position in which the piston is located in and at the front end of a barrel extending forwardly from and communicating with the hopper so that the piston thereby expels a slug of compacted sludge through the open front end of the barrel. The front end of the barrel can be sealed by the knife-like valve member of a gate valve during movement of the piston to retracted position. The front end face of the piston is surrounded by a cutting edge which cooperates with a complementary annular cutting edge at the rear end of the barrel to sever solid ingredients of sludge during penetration of the piston into the barrel. The cutting edge of the valve member cooperates with a complementary cutting edge surrounding an opening in the rear section of the housing of the valve.

Abstract: A garbage disposal unit is provided with a stationery compacting piston fixed at the upper end thereof and with a fixed receptacle member at the lower end thereof. A movable combination member adapted to act as both a receptacle and a compacting piston is mounted intermediate the fixed piston and the fixed receptacle. The disposal unit is thus capable of separately handling different types of garbage, with bottles, cans and the like being placed within the movable combination member to be compacted by upward movement thereof for compacting engagement with the upper fixed piston. Ordinary foodstuffs may be placed within the fixed receptacle at the bottom of the unit and movement of the combination member downwardly enables utilization of the combination member as a compacting piston for crushing garbage within the lower fixed receptacle.

  • Patent number: 3973922
Abstract: Artificial logs are made by forcing a mixture of wood chips and a binder such as wax or paraffin through a tube by means of a feed screw. A section of the tube beyond the feed screw includes a short first portion of constant diameter which by itself has an insufficient length to provide enough friction to generate adequate pressure, followed by a second portion of variable cross-section, the cross-section of which is controlled by a predetermined force, so that friction and pressure in both sections may be readily controlled and limited to values which adequately form logs without the use of excessive power or the generation of excessive heat. By periodically varying the force on the adjustable section portion, a continuous length of log stock being formed may be severed into successive lengths without need for a subsequent sawing operation.
