  • Patent number: 11203171
Abstract: A shear press for scrap including a machine body defining a compaction channel to contain the scrap and guide it in a sliding manner along a predetermined advance direction a compaction unit and blades. The compaction unit includes two mutually opposed jaws articulated to the machine bod according to axes of rotation parallel to each other and orthogonal to the advance direction of the scrap, and actuating members to rotate the jaws around the respective axes of rotation, in opposite directions, between an open configuration and a closed configuration. Each aw includes an operating surface to laterally de-limit the compaction channel when the jaw is in open configuration. The extreme point of a first rectilinear stretch with respect to the axis of rotation of the jaw is aligned to the latter along a direction of alignment which forms, with the first rectilinear stretch, an angle having its vertex facing the inner part of the compaction channel.

Abstract: The invention provides low-cost, non-thermal methods to transform and beneficiate bulk materials, including low rank coals such as peat, lignite, brown coal, subbituminous coal, other carbonaceous solids or derived feedstock. High pressure compaction and comminution processes are linked to transform the solid materials by eliminating interstitial, capillary, pores, or other voids that are present in the materials and that may contain liquid, air or gases that are detrimental to the quality and performance of the bulk materials, thereby beneficiating the bulk products to provide premium feedstock for industrial or commercial uses, such as electric power generation, gasification, liquefaction, and carbon activation. The handling characteristics, dust mitigation aspects and combustion emissions of the products may also be improved.

Abstract: A combination can crushing and retrieving device having a circular or tubular housing containing a plunger and having a rectangular opening in its side wall. The housing has a knife-edged slightly concave indent on the bottom of the housing opposite the rectangular opening, which indent generally conforms to the arch section of the necked down portion of a beverage can. When the concave indent is placed on the lip of a can laying on its side (preferably on drinking end) and forced down the can will “snap” upright, through the rectangular opening and into the housing. The can is then retained in the housing around the necked down portion by a foam/rubber lining located at the lower inside end of the housing. Then the weighted plunger is forced down onto the can, crushing the can and expelling any fluids remaining inside the can through the drinking opening. The crushing stroke can be repeated until the can is maximally compressed. After crushing the can, it is picked up by raising the device.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for combinatorial (i.e., high-throughput) materials research, such as catalysis research, that involves parallel apparatus for simultaneously effecting mechanical treatments such as grinding, mixing, pressing, crushing, sieving, and/or fractionating of such materials are disclosed. The methods and apparatus are useful for mechanically treating catalysis materials and other solid materials, including without limitation, electronic materials such as phosphors, colorants such as pigments, and pharmaceuticals such as crystalline drugs or drug candidates. The simultaneous protocols and parallel apparatus offer substantial improvements in overall throughput for preparing arrays of materials, such as catalysis materials.

  • Patent number: 6546855
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and to a shearing and compacting press for the production of pressed parts, preferably packages (20) from waste material, especially scrap and sheet clippings. The material used is pre-compacted in a first compacting step. In a second compacting step, the material, which has been pre-compacted to the width of the package, is subjected to intermediate compacting until the height of the package (20) is reached. In a third compacting step, final compacting of the material to the final width or length of the package (20) is carried out. According to the invention, the material is pre-compacted with a continuos force and optionally sheared until the compressor (3.1) reaches its final position. The compressor (3.2) is securely adjusted and guided to its end position on a parallel plane. Subsequently, the compressor (3.3) is guided in a position in which the compressor (3.1) releases the opening of the package chamber (2.3) when the compressor (3.1) is driven back.

  • Patent number: 6308618
Abstract: A compactor for containers containing flowable materials in which the containers are compacted in a compaction chamber and flowable materials from the containers are recovered in a controlled manner as by extrusion from the compaction chamber. The compactor advantageously includes a shearing mechanism to assist in controlling the feeding of containers into the compaction chamber and/or the release of the container's contents. The containers are preferably compacted under sufficiently high pressures to rupture the containers and force any flowable materials out of the containers. A collection manifold is preferably provided in sealed communication with the compaction chamber to receive flowable materials extruded from the compaction chamber. A filter or screening mechanism capable of withstanding the pressures generated in the compactor is provided to permit flowable materials to be extruded out of the compacting chamber, yet maintaining the ruptured containers in the compaction chamber.

  • Patent number: 6202548
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for compressing hay such that the hay is suitable for long distance shipping. The hay is texturized by passing the hay through a shredder with an added fog or mist of water. The shredder separates, cuts and bends hay fibers rather than shattering the fibers. Compression of the hay is achieved by feeding the hay through an open ended compression conduit in a peristaltic manner through the use of a hydraulically actuated ram. Increased compression of the hay is achieved by applying transverse pressure to the hay as the hay travels longitudinally through the compression conduit.
