  • Patent number: 10919987
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a dewatering systems, and related methods, that are adapted to convey lignocellulosic biomass to separate at least a portion of the water from a lignocellulosic biomass slurry and accumulate the dewatered lignocellulosic biomass. The dewatering system also includes a headspace occupied by a gas that is at a pressure that facilitates transferring the accumulated biomas into a pretreatment reactor having a pressurized headspace. Such a dewatering system can prevent undue mixing and backflow of gas (e.g., steam) from the pretreatment reactor.

  • Patent number: 6003439
Abstract: A metallic flake manufacturing device uses a bearing to form the flakes. The bearing is located within a container which receives a fluid having suspended metallic particles. The bearing has an outer race, an inner race, and a plurality of bearings disposed between the races. The bearings are immersed in the fluid for flattening the suspended particles into flakes. A shaft extends into the container. The shaft engages one of the races for rotating it relative to the other race.

  • Patent number: 5103720
Abstract: An apparatus for separating of flowable and non-flowable constituents mixed with each other, particularly for the purpose of preparation of foodstuffs, operates with an elastic presser belt which is held pressed against the circumferential surface of a separating drum and which is guided between laterally bounding walls. For reducing the unavoidable leakage flow in the region of the radial sealing gap located between the perforated drum and the presser belt, the sealing gap is provided with a radial recess, which extends over the region of the separating drum encompassed by the presser belt and has an opening in the region of the entry wedge which connect said recess with this region.

  • Patent number: 5073200
Abstract: An improved system for extracting soluble substances from fibrous material by using a plurality of maceration and compression steps thereby excerting moderate pressure on the fibrous material up to 15 bars.Arrangements are made to saturate the fibrous material to its maximum absortion potential between each pressure application. Moisture content of the agent fibrous material is finally reduced with the combined application of moderate and high pressure. The application of imbibition liquid in this area and the use of the solvent received for the purpose of maceration in the preceeding extraction steps is made in accordance with the respective concentration of the solvent. The extraction system can operate without the application of process heat; therefore, a lixiviator is not required. Two or more maceration and compression steps can be located in a module, thus permitting a very compact arrangement of the extraction system.

  • Patent number: 4757757
Abstract: A first body has a cylindrical section that is adjacent a conical section so as to form a constricted passage through which granular solids are forced under pressure. Passage through the constriction results in the application of shear forces to the granular solids which degrades some of the particles to create fines to fit between the larger particles and which induces interparticle motion that facilitates the compaction process. After passing through the constriction, the compacted solids are received in a cylindrical receiving chamber, into which a piston can be inserted for the application of direct compression forces. In a preferred embodiment, the granular solids are forced through several constricted passages in sucession, resulting in several stages of compaction prior to the final stage of direct compression.

  • Patent number: 4643088
Abstract: A dual-cycle method of extracting juice from fruit and a juice extraction installation consisting of two angular presses in tandem arrangement in which the fruit mash yields first quality juice and pomace in the first press, and this pomace is immediately broken up and deposited on the horizontal run of the second press, under the addition of water which soaks and swells the pomace, before it passes through the second extraction press. The latter yields juice of second quality and twice-pressed pomace.

  • Patent number: 4524139
Abstract: This invention relates to a process and apparatus for the compressive regeneration of flexible, porous materials used as filter particles, oil-separating particles or carrier particles in a reactor. These materials are loaded in a reactor with a liquid containing substances to be removed. The liquid is, for example, water, and the substances are, for example, deposited solids, oil droplets or bacteria. After the flexible, porous materials become loaded with the substances, they are conducted to a press chamber equipped with a press means. The transporting, squeezing out, and separation of the water and substances from the flexible porous materials, as well as the recycling of the regenerated material into the reactor are achieved by either a one-time, or a repetitive to and fro movement, of the press means. This regeneration is accomplished with a single device which operates simultaneously as both a regenerating press and as a conveying installation.

  • Patent number: 4323007
Abstract: A method of extracting clear juice from apples and similar fruit involving the use of a screw press having a feed screw with a very gradual continuous slope of the body of the feed screw such that the fruit is gently compressed as it passes through the screw press. The fruit is introduced into the input of a first of such presses and the juices and solids expressed from such gradual compressing are filtered and the juice separated from the remaining solids which are then reintroduced into the input for additional compressing. A second press of the same type may receive the pressed fruit pulp from the output of the first screw press and additional juice extracted therefrom.

  • Patent number: 4187667
Abstract: Apparatus in a crop roll forming machine for collecting particles of crop material lost from either the crop package or loose crop material during the roll formation process consisting of a collection pan, a horizontal collecting auger, an elevated delivery auger, intermeshing bevel gears, drive means and a discharge chute. The particles are recycled from the collection pan back into the roll forming region by the cooperative interaction of the horizontal collecting auger and the elevated delivery auger so that the crop material particles are directed out of the discharge chute and downwardly into the forwardmost portion of the bale forming region where the upper bale forming means works to include the particles in the crop roll being formed.
