  • Patent number: 6085914
Abstract: A garment sorter for semi-automating the sorting of bulk used clothing, and a method of sorting such clothing. Bales of clothing are uncompressed, and single articles of clothing are fed to an operator. Equally, the system can be used for sorting loose clothing. The operator identifies the article verbally, or by keypad entry. Voice recognition software, or other appropriate application software, recognizes the identification, and associates an address with the identified article. The article is then fed to a compacting device that ensures that it is retained within a certain length along a transfer conveyor. The compacted article is then transported to transfer station where a pneumatic pusher, under the control of a PLC, pushes the identified article off the conveyor into a bin, or secondary sort system.

  • Patent number: 4273037
Abstract: A trash compactor has a base frame with vertical I-beam piston guide means supporting a rectangular piston for vertical reciprocation; a plurality of suction openings extend about the periphery of the piston adjacent the end face of the piston and are connected to a vacuum source with flexible seal flaps on the periphery of the piston engaging the sides of an open-topped trash container as the piston moves into the container so that dust resultant from trash compaction is removed by the suction openings to a filter box for disposal.

  • Patent number: 4270447
Abstract: A mobile installation for the treatment of household refuse comprises an elongated vehicle having a centrally located water tank into which the refuse is dumped. Heavier components which settle to the bottom of the tank are transported by an endless conveyor from one end of the tank to a magnetic separator which removes magnetic metal. Other heavy components drop into a crusher and the crushed material is mixed with additives such as cement or coal dust and compressed in a press. Lighter components are removed from the opposite end of the tank by an upwardly inclined screw conveyor which squeezes out much of the water. The lighter components are then mixed with additives such as cement and compressed by an extruder press.

  • Patent number: 4216713
Abstract: An apparatus for crushing cans uses a pair of guide rods having an anvil attached at each end, and a pair of sliding rams sliding on the guide rods. Can support wire members are positioned between each ram and anvil to support a can during crushing. A ram drive cam alternately drives each ram to crush a can against its associated anvil. The single drive cam is connected through reduction gearing to a flywheel which is driven by an electric motor. Each ram has a cam follower and the rams are connected together with springs to maintain the cam followers in continuous contact with the cam. A second embodiment has four rams driven by a single motor and flywheel driving a pair of cams and a can feed mechanism feeds cans in synchronization with the movement of rams.

  • Patent number: 4170936
Abstract: A method for discharging waste materials, such as household refuse, into a central sewage system. Prior to discharge, at least a portion of the waste products are crushed and stored in a container which container is connected to the sewage system by a pipe coupling which includes a solenoid valve controlled either by means of a timing clock or from a central control station. In the latter situation, the solenoid valve is activated preferably by a medium frequency signal generated at the station.

  • Patent number: 4130055
Abstract: An assembly for cleaning and packing tobacco leaves after curing. The cured tobacco leaves are conveyed to a rotating drum of wire construction to allow sand and dirt to be removed from the tobacco leaves while being tumbled. The cleaned tobacco leaves are then deposited within a sheeting ring which is positioned on a tobacco sheet. A power operated compression member engages the tobacco leaves within the ring to compress the same. Locking elements are provided for selectively engaging the sheeting ring with the compression member for removing the same as a unit from the tobacco, following which the ends of the tobacco sheet are tied together.

  • Patent number: 4121514
Abstract: Machine to draw metal (especially aluminum) cans by suction into a housing by a vacuum fan. A hose may be used to pick up cans from the ground or cans may be fed manually into the intake of the housing. The intake is at the top of the housing and in registry therewith is a vertical cylinder of expanded metal or machined from high-impact plastic, which directs the cans down through a conical hopper of high-impact plastic. Small foreign particles pass through the vertical cylinder and hopper and drop to the bottom of the housing. These particles may be collected from the housing from time to time. Dust and very small particles are drawn through the vacuum fan and collected in a filter bag. Large particles such as cans are directed from the hopper to a chute where they are shredded by revolving blades and pass into a compactor housing where they are compressed for salvage.

  • Patent number: 4108063
Abstract: A machine feeds material such as shredded or ground paper, cellulose fiber, peat moss, or the like, into a vertical chamber having a ram forcing the material into a communicating chamber adapted to retain a bag over an open end thereof and having a ram or pressure plate moveable longitudinally thereof for compressing the material in the chamber. The rams are perforated, with the rear thereof being evacuated to dispose of dust or the like, and a piston operated back-up plate is mounted on a track for controlled movement relative to the open ended chamber for holding a bag end during compression of material and removal of loaded bags.

  • Patent number: 4091725
Abstract: Apparatus for crushing containers, such as beverage cans, in a crushing zone between a movable ram and a relatively stationary platen, and for delivering the crushed containers to given receptacles according to the material of the containers. Control means for power operated means, such as a container counting device, includes a pair of movable container engaging probe members that are adapted to engage opposite ends of a container in a testing zone through which the container passes during movement to the crushing zone, the probe members comprising portions of an electric circuit also including a selector switch having a movable switch element. The extent of movement of the movable switch element is governed by the extent of movement of the probe members toward and away from engagement with a container. Power operated mechanism imparts movements to the ram, probe members, and a container feeding device.

  • Patent number: 4075942
Abstract: In a bale press feeder, waste material is drawn into a condenser to form a fluffy blanket. The thickness of the blanket is decreased by passing the blanket through rolling devices with successively reduced clearance, and then by drawing the blanket through a chamber of successively reduced height by a conveyor belt. The thereby compressed blanket is fed to a bale press. A packer, operated in response to the feeding of the compressed blanket to the bale press, cyclically packs the blanket in the press.

  • Patent number: 4059050
Abstract: A can crusher having a pair of vertically aligned wheels with one of the wheels having a resilient tire and the other, driven wheel being non-resilient and having outer projecting bar means that contact the resilient tire. A vertical chute directs the cans into the intersecting contact area of the rotating wheels and a second chute directs the crushed cans at the velocity imparted by the rotating wheels to contact a deflecting surface, whereby the cans are deflected at a high velocity into an air passage containing air moving therein under pressure that in turn passes through a venturi at the point of mixing with the cans, increasing the velocity of movement of the carrying air. Also the suction for the air under pressure is used to separate cans to be crushed from bottles.
