Patent number: 4392424Abstract: This invention relates to a belt printing mechanism with parallel mounted endless type belts which carry on their exterior surface print types. These type belts extend around an adjustment wheel and a plurality of star wheels where the star wheels are rotatable about a shaft where each star wheel has four corners. A catch mechanism is held under tension against the star wheels and holds these in predetermined detent positions to prevent free rotation of the star wheels. When printing multi-character symbols, the selected print types of adjacent type belts must be brought into predetermined printing positions. In order to assure a clean print copy, care must be taken that the print types rest in the exact same line height. In order to accomplish this, the catch mechanism for each star wheel is provided with a spring tongue which touches at least two separated points of the perimeter of its associated star wheel between two adjacent corners thereof.Type: GrantFiled: August 12, 1981Date of Patent: July 12, 1983Assignee: Esselte Pendaflex CorporationInventors: Kurt Schrotz, Richard Schwobel

Patent number: 4377973Abstract: The continuous type belt is arranged round two rollers, one of which is driven. One straight section of the type belt contacts over its entire length the support designed as a platen. In order to avoid groove on the platen caused by the rotating type belt, and to achieve a distribution of other kinds of wear of the platen over its circumference, a gear motor causes the platen to rotate very slowly (approximately 1 revolution in 72 hours). The platen can also be rotated without a gear motor. For this purpose, the longitudinal axis of the platen is slightly inclined relative to the edge of the type belt. This inclination effects a small movement component in the direction of the platen circumference while the type belt slides along the lateral surface of the platen, said component causing a slow revolution of the platen.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 1981Date of Patent: March 29, 1983Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Bruno Gantz, Horst D. Patent number: 4361087Abstract: A printing position adjusting mechanism is disclosed for use in a printer of the type in which a printing head is carried on the leading end portion of a yoke and the row of types of the printing head is arranged in the longitudinal direction of the yoke. The printing position adjusting mechanism includes an externally threaded adjusting ring, which is screwed into the internally threaded hole formed in the front frame plate of the yoke, and its leading end face abuts the opposed leading end face of the yoke. This causes the printing head to be moved longitudinally of the yoke, thereby to adjust the printing position thereof relative to the yoke. For fixing the printing head at a desired printing position to the yoke, an internally threaded hole is formed in the leading end face of the yoke, and a fixing screw is inserted into a center hole through the adjusting ring and extends into the threaded hole in the yoke.Type: GrantFiled: February 26, 1981Date of Patent: November 30, 1982Assignee: Kabushiki Kaisha SatoInventor: Yo Sato

The shaft has a protrusion along the entire length, and the polygonal members have a through-hole and a plurality of grooves on the circumferential surface of the through-hole such that the position of the polygonal members may be fixed by an engagement between the protrusion and the grooves. The printing belts are rotated by a rotation of the polygonal members about the shaft against the engagement between the protrusion and the grooves.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 1977Date of Patent: May 23, 1978Inventors: Toshio Yazawa, Fumi Yazawa

Patent number: 4077318Abstract: A printing apparatus including a plurality of movable flexible endless belts incorporated in a plate drum which are aligned side by side, each of the endless belts being provided with spaced printing type on its outer peripheral surface and arranged side by side in at least on row within the plate drum. The endless belt has power transmitting means including an electromagnetic clutch which is coupled to a slip ring segment for feeding current to the clutch. A plurality of slip ring segments are arranged on substantially concentric circular lines. Every time each of the belts is displaced by a distance corresponding to one spacing between adjacent type, the displacement is detected as an electric pulse by a detecting means. A selected type can be brought to a specified position by the use of means for selectively determining the duration of energization of the electromagnetic clutch based on the detection effected as above.Type: GrantFiled: April 20, 1976Date of Patent: March 7, 1978Assignee: Kobe Dockyard & Engine Works, Ltd.Inventor: Shinkichi Tamai

Patent number: 4075945Abstract: A print medium in the form of a stretchable band on which printing indicia are discretely arranged in linear array. The band may be incorporated in a typewriter or like device, selection of a character being effected by stepwise movement of the band to bring the appropriate indicium to a printing station which is relatively moveable along the printline.Type: GrantFiled: November 10, 1975Date of Patent: February 28, 1978Inventor: Siegfried Heinz Bienholz

Patent number: 4064800Abstract: There is disclosed a low to medium speed printer for use with a digital computer that is characterized by improved throughput, low cost and flexibility. These characteristics are achieved by the fact that it prints in either direction, that several print actuators are time shared among the various print columns of the paper and the print actuators can be readily added to or subtracted from depending on the performance per cost objectives desired.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 1976Date of Patent: December 27, 1977Assignee: Sperry Rand CorporationInventors: Sebastian W. Patent number: 4055117Abstract: In printing apparatus in which a line of characters is printed on a record medium, by means of differentially timed operation of a line of print hammers, as the characters pass predetermined columnar positions of the record medium, the character font size can be changed. On each change of front size, a control circuit adjusts the timing of the actuation of the hammers so that the number of printing cycles necessary to print a line of characters is varied according to the font size used.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 1976Date of Patent: October 25, 1977Assignee: International Computers LimitedInventor: Basil Sidney Munday

Patent number: 4054090Abstract: An endorser assembly comprising inking, ink transfer and endorser rolls resiliently mounted within a modular type supporting frame to enable removal and replacement of the entire endorser assembly from paper handling apparatus. The endorser and ink rolls are adapted to be easily removed from and replaced in the supporting frame. The endorser roll is adapted to print variable and semi-permanent graphic data on sheets processed by the document count handling device and may be selectively moved between an engaged and disengaged position without being removed from the proper handling apparatus. The data-bearing surfaces are resilient and raised relative to the endorser roll surface. A backing platen cooperative with the endorser roll is provided with grooves aligned with the data-bearing surfaces to prevent "back printing" of the processed sheets being endorsed.Type: GrantFiled: September 26, 1975Date of Patent: October 18, 1977Assignee: Brandt-Pra, Inc.Inventors: Peter J.
