Systems and methods for facilitating oil delivery in digital offset lithographic printing techniques
Patent number: 8943961Abstract: A system and method are provided that incorporate a multi-layer plate configuration for a Digital Offset Plate (DOP) including at least a robust top imaging layer and a bottom layer that acts as a reservoir for the releasing oil in a proposed variable digital offset lithographic architecture. The top imaging layer may contain a small amount of oil (<20%) in a range suitable for allowing a small amount of oil to coat the surface and enable release of the ink. A bottom layer may be larger in volume and contain greater quantities (˜20-75%) of oil. Oil from the reservoir layer may diffuse to and through the top layer when the oil in the top surface layer is depleted in a manner that maintains a supply of oil at the surface. The top layer may act as a gate to maintain a steady flow of oil to the surface.Type: GrantFiled: July 10, 2012Date of Patent: February 3, 2015Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Sarah J Vella, Carolyn Moorlag -

Publication number: 20110132214Abstract: A printing unit contains a dampening unit and an inking unit which includes a screen roller with a circumference and an ink applicator roller with a circumference and a gap having an arc length or curve length, the ink applicator roller resting against the screen roller. The circumference of the screen roller and the circumference of the ink applicator roller and the arc length or curve length of the gap are dimensioned in predetermined proportions relative to each other so as to avoid ghosting.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 6, 2010Publication date: June 9, 2011Applicant: HEIDELBERGER DRUCKMASCHINEN AGInventors: WOLFGANG SCHOENBERGER, DIETER SCHAFFRATH, HANS BUTTERFASS

Patent number: 7510610Abstract: A sheet moistening device comprises a pair of moistening rollers which respectively have porous layers and form a nip to convey a sheet, and a dampening mechanism which supplies water to at least one of the pair of moistening rollers through a surface thereof. In the sheet moistening device, a roller surface hardness differs between the pair of moistening rollers. In addition, the sheet moistening device can further comprise a regulating device which regulates an amount of water to be supplied from the dampening mechanism to the moistening roller.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 2005Date of Patent: March 31, 2009Assignee: Konica Minolta Business Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Masashi Kougami, Hisao Satoh

Patent number: 7387067Abstract: A medium, typically a fluid, is supplied at a level of a rotatable body and is dispensed by a dispenser, such as a spray dispenser. The spray dispenser includes at least one spraying nozzle which applies a dampening agent to the roller. A spraying frequency of the spraying nozzle is adjusted with respect to a rotation frequency of the roller that is receiving the dampening agent. This makes it possible to avoid superposition of the dampening agent, at least for a defined number of rotations of the roller receiving the dampening agent.Type: GrantFiled: October 21, 2003Date of Patent: June 17, 2008Assignee: Koenig & Bauer AktiengesellschaftInventor: Claus August Bolza-Schünemann

Patent number: 6561090Abstract: A press dampening system which applies dampening fluid to a roll or cylinder using high-density straight streams of fluid flow. The term straight stream encompasses a stream of fluid which is primarily laminar, and which produces a minimal amount of spray or droplets. The flow of fluid is not, or is minimally, broken up into droplets. The straight streams, which include a high density of water or dampening fluid, impact against the roll or cylinder and thereafter the straight stream spreads out across the surface of the roll or cylinder in a puddle-like fashion. Each straight stream is created by an orifice—preferably a micro-orifice—which, at an appropriate back pressure upstream of the orifice, causes the water or dampening fluid to emerge from the orifice in a straight stream of relatively laminar flow.Type: GrantFiled: November 3, 1999Date of Patent: May 13, 2003Assignee: Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AGInventor: Raymond Hildreth Spooner

Patent number: 6546860Abstract: A dampening unit for a printing press contains a first roller and a second roller that together form a slip gap. The dampening unit is distinguished in that a pivot axis, about which the first roller is pivotably supported against the second roller, extends through a center axis of the first roller and substantially parallel to a tangential line that is located on a line L which extends through the slip gap.Type: GrantFiled: March 17, 2000Date of Patent: April 15, 2003Assignee: Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AGInventor: Peter Heiler

Patent number: 6253677Abstract: Disclosed is a spray nozzle repositioning device for attaching to a spray bar in a multi-nozzle spray dampening system of a printing press to reposition the nozzle and reduce the area covered by the dampening spray. The positioning device has a fluid conducting body member to which is connected a first coupling member which extends transversely outwardly from the body member and engages the nozzle connector on the spray bar. A second coupling member spaced from the first coupling member is operatively connected to the body member and extends transversely outward in the direction opposite to the first direction and has formations which permit the mounting of the nozzle in fluid communication with the body member so that the nozzle may be repositioned transversely closer to the adjacent nozzle and closer to the surface being sprayed.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 2000Date of Patent: July 3, 2001Assignee: Ryco Graphic Manufacturing, Inc.Inventor: Thomas G.
