Abstract: A web of photographic paper having at its rear side at least one longitudinally extending reference line and at least one row of equally spaced marks which is parallel to the reference line. The reference line and the marks are applied below a coat of liquid-repellent synthetic plastic material. The reference line is scanned by a first photoelectric detector and the row of marks is scanned by a second photoelectric detector which remains in register with the row of marks because the first detector is maintained in register with the reference line by a follow-up control system. The second detector furnishes signals which are used to arrest the advancing rolls for the web in a photoelectric copying machine or subsequent to development of images so that the web is severed during each interval of stoppage. The reference line and the marks are applied simultaneously but prior to the application of photosensitive emulsion to the front side of the web.
Abstract: Compact rotary multi-color printing press for roll-fed webs, especially for use with machines for forming bags of polyethylene and the like. The press has a web feed arrangement which isolates a section of the web around a main drum and which varies the web speed with demand. Dryers are located adjacent to the main drum and in the base of the press, which is supported upon rollers so that the press may be readily moved to an operating site.
Abstract: A machine for printing a recurrent pattern on sections of predetermined length of a textile web, comprising a number of parallel rotary-screen printing units spaced apart in the direction of web motion, includes a first sensor for detecting the leading edge of an oncoming web section to be imprinted and a second sensor for ascertaining the passage of a mark indicating the start of a printing pattern on the first unit. The odd-numbered units print the first half of the pattern, in different colors, whereas the even-numbered units print the second half in corresponding colors; between printing operations, the screen of each unit is lifted off the web and can be angularly readjusted to compensate for relative disalignment between the web sections and the printing patterns.
Abstract: A web is guided onto a movable support, such as a printing blanket, and the web and the support are advanced together in a common direction, but at differential speeds so that the web will be subjected to tensioning. Onto the thus supported and tensioned web, a print is then applied. The invention discloses an apparatus for carrying out the above sequence.
Abstract: An improvement in printing presses wherein main press side frames are provided with circumferential slots about the axis of plate or printing cylinders for receiving sectional or reversible mounting blocks for carrying impression cylinders. The mounting blocks have eccentrically mounted cylinder bearings and adjustment means are provided for precisely locating the blocks in the slots. The Invention provides for ready changing of the press from letterpress to offset or planographic printing.
Abstract: A two-color or two image flexographic printing apparatus is provided for post-printing non-planar articles, such as cups, by applying the ink to the article utilizing a pair of impression rolls which contact the article on diametrically opposite sides of the outer surface simultaneously as the article is rotated in printing contact with each of the impression rolls.
Abstract: Stencilling apparatus for applying successive coatings to traveling web stock. The web stock may be advanced in successive wraparound turns to the same stencilling station. The adjacent turns are stencilled simultaneously at this station by a multipart squeegee in a multipart stencil frame, after each is placed in registry. The web tension in each turn of web stock is independently controlled by a pressure differential controller that retains a variable length loop of web under tension by a dynamic air flow pressure differential, which also causes a drying action of any coating on the web.
Abstract: Slit registry apparatus and method for registry of flexible, generally planar stock as for stencilling thereon, involving formation of periodic transverse slits and adjacent edges in the stock, at least one of the edges and the adjacent stock zone or area being offset from the plane of the stock for engagement of this offset edge by a registration surface.
Abstract: For printing continuous woven label stock (i.e. a web consisting of a plurality of woven labels connected together end-to-end) a printing machine comprises a support which supports the label stock and progresses it past a printing station having a printing head including a printing roller adapted to be rotated in synchronism with the moving stock sufficiently for a single printing operation upon passage of each label, driving of the printing head being initiated by a sensor which senses a datum mark on each label. For printing a plurality of colors, there may be a number of such printing heads, driving of each successive one of such printing heads being initiated by rotation of the preceding printing head.
Abstract: Each print cylinder in a multi-color printing press is provided a numerical address for each registration tolerance increment around the print cylinder circumference. An electrically determined reference point common to all print cylinders determines the address origin for each cylinder. Once aligned in operative registration for a particular printing job format, the registered alignment address for each cylinder is recorded. The address record is used to reset the several cylinders of the same machine without need of a web therein when it is desired to print the same job format on a recurrent occasion.
Abstract: In the method herein as the items, such as labels for a particular product, are being printed on a continuous web, there is simultaneously printed in association with each item a control element constituted of an ink different from the ink or inks employed in printing the item indicia and having an unapparent, but detectable physical characteristic peculiar to such different ink. Illustrative inks employed for this purpose are visible and invisible luminescent inks.
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed wherein a signal proportional to the speed of a moving web is compared with a signal proportional to the speed of a motor driven rotary, printing member, and a resultant corrective signal is transmitted to the control for the motor, so that the linear speed of the rotary printing member is made equal to the web speed. A plurality of printing members are provided so that the linear speed of each of the printing members is made equal to the web speed and in synchronization one with the other. The method and apparatus as aforesaid are specifically adaptable for rotary screen printing of fabrics, wherein the fabric contactingly engages a plurality of rotating screens in series, and a color is passed through each screen in selected predetermined areas, so that the composite screen printings provides a repetitive design on the fabric.
