Abstract: A transfer drum between printing units in a sheet-fed printing press includes gripper systems which can be switched to a desired mode of operation by simple measures and ensure stable and reliable transport of a sheet between printing units when in a respective operating position. A drum body has journals for supporting the drum body in side walls and two gripper systems provided on the drum body. The gripper systems are radially extendable into an operating position depending on a selected mode of operation for printing on only one side or for printing on both sides of the sheet. The gripper systems are disposed diametrically opposite each other relative to an axis of rotation of the drum body and are attached to a support disposed in the drum body to move in radial direction.

Abstract: Sheets are conveyed through a printing machine with improved reliability of the suction grippers. The apparatus for conveying a sheet through a printing machine has a cylinder with grippers in a channel for holding the sheet at its leading edge, circulating grippers for holding and for transferring the sheet from the cylinder at its leading edge, and circulating, radially positionable suction grippers for holding the sheet at its trailing edge. An actuating apparatus opens and closes the grippers and controls vacuum for the suction grippers. A drive for the cylinder and circulating grippers and suction grippers. A control device switches on and off the sheet feed to the cylinder. The suction grippers can be moved in the radial direction into a rest position when the sheet feed is switched off.

Abstract: A rotating drum in which, when the rotating drum is rotated at high speed, there is no offset between divisional drum parts, there is little imbalance, and a moment of inertia for rotation is small. A drum main body is divided into four drum parts whose cross-sectional configurations orthogonal to an axis are fan-shaped. Female projecting portions and male projecting portions are formed at a pitch dimension having a predetermined fit-together tolerance. Thus, the drum parts can be assembled together with a certain amount of leeway at a time of assembly. After the four drum parts have been assembled together, wires are press-fit in from an end surface side of the drum main body so as to tightly fasten the drum parts. Because the assembled drum main body defines configurations of the drum parts to have point symmetry, imbalance can be made small.

  • Patent number: 6752080
Abstract: A sheet material holding device applicable to an automatic printing plate exposure apparatus is disclosed. A notched groove is disposed in an upper surface of a clamp body corresponding to the pressing direction of a press shaft of the sheet material holding device, and a point of contact between the press shaft and the groove is adjusted. A straight line connecting the contact point with an axial center of a rotating shaft intersects a circular trajectory of the contact point at a substantially right angle. Substantially all of the pressing force of the press shaft acts to pivot the clamp body, whereby a rotary drum is prevented from being rotated at the time of pressing.

  • Patent number: 6739252
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for reversing sheet material in a sheet-processing machine having at least two printing units, a reversing drum with a gripper system, and an impression cylinder that can be operated as a storage drum in perfecting mode and to which a further gripper system for one edge of the sheet material is assigned. In perfecting mode, one of the edges of the sheet material is gripped at an angular offset before the transfer centerline between the reversing drum and the storage drum, before the edge of the sheet material fixed to the storage drum is released.

  • Patent number: 6736396
Abstract: When a sheet member or printing plate is closely held on a peripheral surface of a drum, no scratch is made on the peripheral surface, edges of the sheet member are held with certainty, and the sheet member is prevented from being partially lifted from the peripheral surface, thereby preventing deterioration of image quality. Since clamp portions are rotated in a direction in which they tension the sheet member due to a centrifugal force acting thereon, the sheet member is held in close contact with the peripheral surface. Further, since the clamp portions are disposed at one end portion in a width direction of the plate, gripper margins of the sheet member is reduced and an image-recordable area thereof can be increased.

  • Patent number: 6729235
Abstract: An imaging drum assembly is provided for use in an imaging apparatus for forming images on sheet material. The imaging drum assembly comprises a rotatable imaging drum having an outer surface adapted to attract sheet material to the imaging drum. A material clamp is mounted to the drum and has a retainer positioning a retaining surface radially outward of the outer surface and forming a space therebetween. A slide is movable positioned within the space between an outer radial position where outward radial movement of the slide is blocked by the retaining surface and an inner radial position distant from the retaining surface. A biasing member urges the slide toward the outer radial position.

  • Patent number: 6722277
Abstract: A device for turning sheet-like material from a printed side onto an unprinted side uses an impression cylinder which guides the sheet-like material and which is preceded by a transfer cylinder and followed by a further transfer cylinder. The sheet-like, flexurally rigid material is received on the outer surface of the impression cylinder and can be printed with a transmission cylinder. In the gusset between the outer surfaces of the impression cylinder and the preceding transfer cylinder, a contactlessly acting throw-on device is provided which forces the sheet-like material into a curved position corresponding to the curvature of the outer surface of the impression cylinder such that the sheet-like material is curved even in the gusset region. A printing press and a multicolor rotary printing press are also provided.

  • Patent number: 6722276
Abstract: Devices for turning sheets in a rotary printing machine are described. The devices have a storage drum for handling sheets, which are each held by a holding device, and a turning drum is disposed downstream of the storage drum and has a holding device for engaging a rear edge of the sheet to be turned. An operation of detaching the sheet to be turned from the storage drum and carrying it along by the turning drum leads to the formation of a pressure reduction in an area formed between the sheet to be turned, the storage drum and the turning drum. The pressure reduction is compensated for by supplying ambient air, blast air and/or compressed air. The turning device has a channel and/or a passage orifice connected to an inner chamber of the turning drum. Via the channel and/or passage orifice air can be sucked and/or blown into the reduced-pressure area.

Abstract: A printing plate is only guided by and wound around peripheral surfaces of cylinders. The cylinders are disposed along an axis of a rotating shaft at predetermined intervals, and support the entire printing plate with substantially equal balance. The printing plate has a degree of firmness, and thus, the printing plate can hold itself in a substantially cylindrical shape even if it is merely rolled in the air. Therefore, the whole printing plate can be accurately wound and held onto a peripheral locus of a predetermined radius coaxial with the rotating shaft merely by disposing guide members as auxiliary guides for positioning and winding parts of the printing plate.
