  • Publication number: 20090173250
Abstract: A system is disclosed for defeating enemy missiles and rockets, particularly rocket propelled grenades (RPG's). The first step is to identify the firing of a missile by the use of sensors that give the approximate distance and bearing of the incoming missile. A non-lethal cloud of pellets is then launched from the target, which can be a building or vehicle or the like, in the general direction of the missile. The pellets are housed in a series of warhead containers mounted at locations on the target in various orientations. The warheads are triggered to fire a low velocity cloud of pellets toward the incoming missile. The pellets then collide with the missile a certain distance away from the target causing premature detonation of the missile, and/or possible severe damage to the missile, and/or deflection of the missile, due to the relatively high velocity of the missile.

Abstract: A method for the dispersion of projectiles from guns capable of firing multiple projectiles in rapid succession whereby some of the projectiles are modified by moving the center of mass of the projectile away from it's central axis and oriented prior to firing. This, in combination with bring fired from a rifled gun barrel, imparts velocity to the projectile upon exiting the gun barrel at right angles to the barrel. This velocity along with the higher muzzle velocity will cause the modified projectile to diverge away from the trajectory of a standard projectile. The magnitude of the divergence will vary with the distance the projectile's center of mass is away from its central axis, and the placement of the modified projectile strikes around the bull's-eye will be determined by the loading orientation of the modified projectile. Firing a multiplicity of standard and modified projectiles in rapid succession will produce an accurate dispersion pattern on a target, increasing the hit probability on that target.

  • Patent number: 5648637
Abstract: An otherwise conventional shell is provided with a load consisting of a plurality of axially stacked disks. The disks separate during flight and each strikes the target with a substantial portion of the initial momentum imparted to the disks thereby contributing to the stopping power of the load. In alternative embodiments, individual disks are scored so that on impact, the disks shatter into many smaller fragments, each capable of penetration into the target to impart additional wound trauma to the target. Disks may be made of lead, ceramic, or other dense material. Alternatively, plastic or a relatively soft elastomeric material is used when a non lethal but debilitating load is appropriate such as in crowd control situations.

  • Patent number: 5325786
Abstract: Disclosed is an improved design for individual flechettes, a multiplicity of which are arrayed in an ammunition cartridge for a gun. The flechettes have elongate solid bodies centered about a longitudinal axis, the bodies tapering from a waist to both forward end and rearward end. The waists of the flechettes are closer to the forward end than to the rearward end so that the flechettes' centers of gravity are closer to the forward ends than the rearward ends. The flechettes may have regular polygonal cross sections or essentially regular polygonal cross sections wherein the flechettes define fins along their bodies. Packing arrangements of the flechettes within ammunition cartridges are also shown.

  • Patent number: 5295439
Abstract: A novel multi-slug bullet or round is provided that, through the use of flat-faced abutting end walls of successive cylindrical slugs, tightly packed above the powder charge in the cartridge casing, and appropriate fast-burning powder charge tailored to the weight of the multiple slugs, achieves multiple-hit stopping power within self-defense ranges and the like with greatly reduced penetration and thus minimal chance of lethality or collateral damage. With a single firing, multiple hits over a controlled area are achieved, materially lessening the requirement for precise aiming, reducing the amount of ammunition and the number of firings required in use, and reducing recoil, while eliminating ricochet effects.

  • Patent number: 5225628
Abstract: A high impact low penetration round includes a transparent casing and a plurality of deformable pellets fired from the casing as projectiles. The pellets are formed of a lead wax material that flattens and deforms upon contact with a solid object. Contact with a solid object discharges all of the kinetic energy associated with firing the pellet and transfers this energy to the object so that the pellet will not ricochet or penetrate the object. The pellets are shaped to tumble in the air to enhance energy loss and to aid in the detachment and distribution of the pellets. The rounds can be used as shotgun ammunition at close range to provide an effective anti personnel round with a lethality that diminishes rapidly after an effective range of about thirty-five yards.

  • Patent number: 4996923
Abstract: In a method and apparatus for manufacturing a flechette load, a series of operative steps are carried out to produce a matrix-supported load of flechettes held in a desired array. First, a load of flechettes are mounted by a die end cap in a desired array in which at least the trailing end portions thereof are exposed and disposed in closely spaced side-by-side relation. Next, the die end cap is assembled to a die body such that at least the exposed trailing end portions of the flechettes are placed in the mold cavity of the assembled die. A mixture of expandable thermoplastic beads and, preferably, a bond weakening agent is also placed in the mold cavity with the mixture surrounding the exposed trailing end portions of the flechettes therein. Finally, the mixture is heated so as to produce in the mold cavity directly on and about the exposed trailing end portions of the flechettes a matrix in the form of a solid foam body of a thermoplastic foam material.

  • Patent number: 4815388
Abstract: A shot charge and wad structure includes a thick-walled plastic shot wad cup having integrally connected base and continuous sidewall portions which together define a shot pocket with an open end for receiving and supporting a charge of shot. The structure also includes a shot pellet charge in the shot pocket composed of tungsten and having a hardness generally at least equal to that of the gun barrel in which a shotshell containing the pellets is to be fired. An insert disk is disposed in the pocket below and in supporting relation to the charge of shot pellets in the pocket. The disk is composed of a material, such as aluminum, having a hardness sufficient to prevent any of the pellets in the charge thereof from embedding therein or in the base portion. Instead, the charge cleanly separates from the pocket of the cup upon firing of a shotshell containing the charge. The shot pocket can be either generally square or circular in cross-section.

  • Patent number: 4733611
Abstract: A multiple projectile cartridge for a handgun comprises four spherical projectiles embedded within a paraffin/powder filler material contained within a plastic casing enclosed in a conventional small caliber shell containing the usual primer assembly and powder charge. The projectiles each have a diameter slightly less than the internal casing diameter which maximizes the number of shots and mass traveling at high velocity to strike the target. The single row of projectiles are longitudinally spaced from each other by the filler material so that the projectiles do not crunch together during flight, resulting in a shot string held together in a close pattern of high ballistic integrity. The diametral relationship (i.e., clearance) between the projectile diameter and internal casing diameter also prevents the plastic casing side wall from laterally expanding as the casing travels through the gun barrel to prevent groove fouling.
