Publication number: 20120216698Abstract: A modified 40 mm grenade round designed to breach doors without throwing a significant amount of shrapnel into a building's interior or back toward the shooter. The modified round includes a forward extension on the ogive. The extension is rigidly connected to a thrust column which transmits an impact load directly from the ogive's nose cap to the striker on the fuse assembly. This configuration detonates the explosive charge within the projectile while the explosive is still well outside the door. This early detonation throws a pressure wave again the door's exterior, forcing the door inward.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 24, 2011Publication date: August 30, 2012Inventors: Bruce G. Patent number: 8250987Abstract: A Kinetic Energy penetrator round is shown effective in neutralizing incoming air borne threat munitions such as rockets, artillery, or mortars for instance, without posing a threat in urban environments to harm bystanders on the ground. There are also no hazards or expense with this round of cleaning up unexploded ordnance, which might have occurred with other types of rounds due to unreliability of self destruct mechanisms. Shown herein is a kinetic energy penetrator for air defense that merely self destructs beyond its operational range into fragments that are not lethal to personnel on ground; no pyrotechnic or energetic materials means are used to activate this self destruct process. A full bore projectile structure is shown that is composed of plural axi-symmetric circular disks stacked on each other and tied by a shape memory metal wire of Nitinol. While operational as a joined group, the disks are a formidable round to kill an incoming air target.Type: GrantFiled: July 14, 2009Date of Patent: August 28, 2012Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventors: Andrew Morley, Mohan J. Patent number: 7845281Abstract: A gun firing method whereby multiple projectiles segments that are contained within a cartridge are fired simultaneously in a symmetrical pattern. Some of the multiple projectile segments are modified by moving the center of mass of the projectile segments away from the central longitudinal axis of the cartridge. This in combination with bring fired from a rifled gun barrel will impart velocity to the modified projectile segments upon exiting the gun barrel at right angles to the gun barrel. This velocity along with the higher muzzle velocity will cause the modified projectile segments to diverge away from the trajectory of a standard projectile segment and strike the target away from the bullseye. The magnitude of the divergence will vary with the distance the projectile segment's center of mass is away from the central longitudinal axis of the cartridge.Type: GrantFiled: June 2, 2007Date of Patent: December 7, 2010Inventor: Richard Frank Sexton

The cartridge shell (20) is a one-piece basin-shaped part; it is also pressed onto the central body (2) and engages a circumferential engagement bead (22) with a circumferential engagement slot (23) of the central body (2). A receiver recess (25) is provided in an approximately cylindrical projection (24) that is inserted centered from the base to receive the propulsive charge (28) and its igniter (29). The round is of simple design, and may be manufactured inexpensively owing to its simple parts that may be largely of plastic without loss of function.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 2004Date of Patent: October 26, 2010Assignee: Nico-Pyrotechnik Hanns-Juergen Diergen Diederichs & Co., KGInventor: Detlef Haeselich

Publication number: 20100237186Abstract: A drag-stabilized water-entry projectile having a projectile body, one or more drag-stabilizing elements, such as fins, flares or canards, and one or more attachment members adapted to hold the one or more drag-stabilizing elements to the projectile body. The one or more attachment members are coated with a thermally reactive material. A projectile and cartridge assembly has a shear pin, a projectile having a first cutout portion, the cutout portion sized to receive the shear pin. The assembly also includes a sabot configured to house the projectile and having a second cutout portion, the second cutout portion sized to receive the shear pin. Publication number: 20100236441Abstract: A cartridge (1) is provided comprising a cartridge case (2) and a projectile arrangement (3; 3?) with an arrow projectile (5; 5?) with a sub-caliber control unit (7), wherein the projectile arrangement (3; 3?) is connected to the cartridge case (2) via a case cover (4), wherein, after firing of the projectile arrangement (3; 3?), a precise guiding of the arrow projectile (5; 5?) in the corresponding weapon barrel is ensured due to a receptacle device (28; 28?) that centers the control unit (7) of the arrow projectile (5; 5?), and that can be separated from the control unit (7) when the projectile arrangement (3; 3?) is fired. The receptacle device is connected to the case cover (4) on the projectile side, wherein the receptacle device grasps a ring-shaped rear flange (29; 29?) whose outer diameter corresponds to the projectile caliber of the respective cartridge (1).Type: ApplicationFiled: February 19, 2010Publication date: September 23, 2010Applicant: RHEINMETALL WAFFE MUNITION GMBHInventors: Thomas HEITMANN, Christian BAUMANN
