Shaped Charge Patents (Class 102/476)
  • Patent number: 5569873
Abstract: A method is provided for dispersing and/or disrupting an aligned jet from a haped charge round. A fluted shaped charge liner, typically used to compensate for spin effects on a coherent jet in a spin stabilized round is applied to a non-spinning round to produce a dispersed and/or disrupted jet pattern. The effect of disruption may also be altered by altering the subcalibration ratio (ratio of liner diameter to charge diameter). For a given liner diameter, an increase in charge diameter may result in increased dispersion of the jet. In addition, other types of spin compensated liners such as those using so-called metallurgical spin compensation, may be applied to a non-spinning round to produce dispersion and/or disruption of the jet. Moreover, the rate of spinning of the round (or the direction of spin) may be altered such that the spin compensated liner produces a dispersed jet pattern.

  • Patent number: 5565644
Abstract: An improved shaped charge for generating a jet. A lens shaped waveshaper is positioned within the explosive material of a shaped charge to modify the shape of the divergent detonation wave into a planar wave or a converging wave. The waveshaper is formed with a low sound speed material having a high index of refraction. By reshaping the detonation wave, the acceleration of the shaped charge liner is increased, and the penetration depth and hole size of the jet can be increased. The shaped charge operates more efficiently, thereby requiring less explosive material than a conventional shaped charge.

  • Patent number: 5551346
Abstract: The jet of a shaped charge ammunition round may be disrupted and dispersed y altering the local charge to mass ratio within the shaped charge round. A shaped charge round typically produces a coherent jet suitable for penetrating thick armor or the like. However, such coherent jets may be unsuitable for damaging thinner targets. By placing a mass (or removing a mass) at a local portion of the shaped charge liner, the outer casing, or the explosive charge, the local charge to mass ratio may be altered, causing disruption of the coherent jet. A wire, wrapped around the charge liner in a spiral fashion, may be used to produce a substantially helical or spiral shaped jet which may be particularly applicable for damaging missiles or the like.

  • Patent number: 5522319
Abstract: A hemispherical shaped charge has been modified such that one side of the hemisphere is spherical and the other is aspherical allowing a wall thickness variation in the liner. A further modification is to use an elongated hemispherical shape. The liner has a thick wall at its pole and a thin wall at the equator with a continually decreasing wall thickness from the pole to the equator. The ratio of the wall thickness from the pole to the equator varies depending on liner material and HE shape. Hemispherical shaped charges have previously been limited to spherical shapes with no variations in wall thicknesses. By redesign of the basic liner thicknesses, the jet properties of coherence, stability, and mass distribution have been significantly improved.

A first arming assembly containing a first firing pin is located proximate to the follow through charge. A delay fuze is interposed between the first primary charge and the follow through charge. A second arming assembly containing a second firing pin is located proximate to the forward-shaped charge. In the armed state, a primary explosives are interposed between the firing pins and the follow through charge and forward shaped charge.

  • Patent number: 5191169
Abstract: A multiple module EFP warhead comprises a tubular body having a central axis with a plurality of explosively formed penetrator modules arranged tandemly within the body along the axis. Each of the modules includes a curved, dish shaped support disk having a unique forwardly convex curvature. The support disk is focused on the axis at a point behind the module. Each module has a set of circumferentially spaced apertures therethrough, each having a central aperture axis intersecting the central axis. Each aperture supports a separate ductile metal disk therein and an explosive charge behind and against the metal disk. Each of the aperture axes forms an acute angle of inclination with the central axis which is uniquely offset from the axes of the other modules so that each EFP travels along a unique forward path.

  • Patent number: 5175391
Abstract: A shaped charge device having a cylindrical housing, an explosive charge with a cavity at one end, a fuze, booster, a multimaterial vertically layered liner having a hemispherical, semi-hemispherical, arcuate or conical shape with a number of segments of materials, each segment in contact with the explosive charge and the cavity, each segment oriented normal, parallel or oblique to the charge axis. The detonating of the explosive charge causes the liner to form a jet of a plurality of the segments. A method of manufacture is also disclosed wherein the liners made in the vertical manner avoid mixing or interaction between dissimilar materials undergoing the jetting action. Vertically layered liners provide excellent material flow and liner collapse diagnostics.

  • Patent number: 5155297
Abstract: A projectile-forming explosive charge-insert of intensified penetrating power into a target, wherein a mass or weight component is centrally positioned in the insert, and the weight member possesses at least one shank projecting into the explosive charge. The weight member or mass serves as a stabilizer during the deformation of the insert into a projectile. The deformation procedure is favorably influenced by the weight member; in effect, during the collaboration of the insert in the region of the head, the mass or weight member acts in a damping or attenuating manner. Governing for the attenuating property of the weight member is, accordingly, its length towards the explosive and its attenuating capacity specific to its material.

Abstract: A warhead including a shell which encloses the explosive charge and a projectile forming liner with the liner being disposed so that its circumferential surface lies against an intermediate ring which, in turn, is fastened to the shell. To avoid undefinable spalling effects in the region of the boundary surfaces between the liner and the shell, which could result in asymmetrical tail formation for the projectile produced by the detonative resharping of the liner, the intermediate ring and the liner have the same acoustic impedance.

Abstract: A metal liner for a shaped charge device having a ductile metal matrix and a discrete second phase is provided. The allow composition is selected so the second phase is molten when the liner is accelerated following detonation. The slug does not penetrate the hole perforated in the well casing by the liner jet and oil flow into the well bore is not impeded.
