Patent number: 6363856Abstract: A projectile for small arms, incorporating a core, skirt, and driving band. The present invention's design acts to increase muzzle velocity in three main ways. The core is lightweight, therefore, the same amount of propellent will cause the present invention to be pushed out of the barrel at a higher rate than a conventional heavier bullet. Additionally, a thin skirt circumscribing the base of the projectile is incorporated into it during manufacture. All of the design characteristics of the present invention act to increase the muzzle velocity of the projectile when used with a conventional load as compared to the same load used with a conventional projectile. The increased velocity is achieved in standard small arms without modification to barrels, recoil springs, or other devices. Law enforcement officers must be extremely careful in regard to innocent bystanders who may potentially be hit be an errant bullet, or by a bullet that over-penetrates its target.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 1999Date of Patent: April 2, 2002Inventors: Roscoe R. Patent number: 5400716Abstract: A deformable hunting projectile has a one-piece body in the form of a turned red brass part with a tapering head part and a cylindrical guide part; a charge (7) of fine zinc or similar expansion agent is arranged in the head part and a charge of hard lead is arranged in the guide part. The charges are separated by a partition (13) formed in one piece from the body of the projectile, which is concave at the front and convex at the rear and therefore elastically deformable transversally. This, together with the deformability of the charges, permits good radial adaptation of the projectile to the barrel of a gun. The manufacture of the body of the projectile on a computer-controlled lathe ensures extremely precise concentricity of the charges with the outer surface. For use in propellant charge cartridges of various strengths, the projectiles can be manufactured with varying wall thicknesses of the head part.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 1991Date of Patent: March 28, 1995Inventor: Karl K. Patent number: 5365853Abstract: Disclosed is a projectile that has high velocity at short range. The projectile has a body of material that is lighter, more lubricous and more deformable than a partial Jacket on the rearward portion of the projectile. The jacket defines an annular array of apertures on the outer diametrical surface of the jacket and the body has peripheral zones that extend into the apertures far enough to be flush with the outer diametrical surface. The peripheral zones not only provide a physical lock between the body and jacket but also lubricate the interface between the projectile and the gun barrel along which the projectile travels during firing of a gun. The apertures are configured to allow the body to erupt radially outward through the jacket's side wall and form a relatively wide, shallow dispersal pattern when the projectile impacts a target. An optional core within the plastic body enhances the body's radially outward dispersal upon the projectile's impact with a target.Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 1994Date of Patent: November 22, 1994Inventors: Robert M. Patent number: 4336756Abstract: The lower wall of the pre-formed jacket of a bullet is thicker than the upper portion of the jacket and the uppermost or open end of the pre-formed jacket is deformed on its interior surface to provide a plurality of flat surfaces which are joined by a plurality of axial grooves. An inwardly-extending annular ring having a downwardly sloping upper surface and an upwardly sloping undersurface is formed at a shoulder by compression between the lower, thicker wall and the thinner wall adjoining it and, where the core is pressed into the jacket, the annular ring is deformed so that its undersurface becomes perpendicular to the wall of the jacket, thus engaging and holding the base of the core within the jacket. The core and jacket are subsequently deformed into a conventional dynamic shape.Type: GrantFiled: August 16, 1978Date of Patent: June 29, 1982Assignee: Hornady Manufacturing CompanyInventor: Charles J.
