Patent number: 5188038Abstract: The present invention features a safety device that activates the air-brake system immediately upon the detection and/or occurrence of a railroad car derailment condition. The safety device includes a bar entension disposed beneath each car of a train. The extension bar is disposed transverse to the parallel rails and is positioned a few (approximately four) inches above them. When any one of the cars is caused to derail, the extension bar contacts the rail, causing a trip valve in the air-brake line to open. The opening of the trip valve gradually releases the air pressure in the line, thus automatically and instantaneously actuating the air-brake system throughout the train. The gradual release of the air pressure in the air-brake system provides more time for the engineer of the train to bring the train under control and reduces the possibility of damage and injury caused by the derailment.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 1992Date of Patent: February 23, 1993Inventor: Thomas E. Patent number: 4275660Abstract: A steerable vehicle adapted to be driven on roads, especially for the public local passenger traffic, which has a steerable axle with deflectable wheels and at least one axle with wheels immovable relative to the axle which is pivotally secured at the vehicle in a bogey-like manner, and with cross-guide rollers mounted on both sides of the vehicle within the area of the vehicle axles and carried at least indirectly by the respective axle bodies. The pivotal axle is elastically centered in a straight driving position, out of which it is pivotal by the steering forces produced by the cross-guide rollers against the force of centering springs, whereby the centering springs and the prestress are chosen so strong that brake force differences of one vehicle side compared to the other side do not effect an automatic axle deflection.Type: GrantFiled: September 25, 1978Date of Patent: June 30, 1981Assignee: Daimler-Benz AktiengesellschaftInventor: Hans-Joachim Forster

Patent number: 4231294Abstract: A toy train in which each track length or section is mounted in a base having a spaced longitudinal slot parallel with the tracks and outside of the tracks. In addition to the conventional rails, and lying between them, a pair of spaced parallel rails are mounted for carrying the electric current to the train. A transparent curved cover is arched over the tracks with the edges of the cover entering the slots in the base. When the track lengths are joined at the ends, a connecting strip also joins the contiguous edges of the transparent cover to form a continuous enclosed transparent tube. The train is generally annular to fit the tube. Besides the conventional flanged wheels for riding the rails, the train is also provided with a pair of grooved wheels adapted to engage the electrical rails. This not only supplies the electrical current to the train, but also serves to hold the train on the tracks and prevent derailment at high speeds especially around the curves.Type: GrantFiled: May 21, 1979Date of Patent: November 4, 1980Inventor: Philippe Arzoumanian

Patent number: 4221077Abstract: A toy racing car is provided which may be steered from one slot to another on a multi-slotted wide track. The car is electrically energized through electrically conductive strips extending along both sides of the slots either internally or externally of the slots, and the car has a solenoid operated pin which extends down into the slot to hold the car on course. The car may be turned in one direction or another by selecting the polarity of the voltage applied to the electric motor in the car, and the pin may be released from the slot by a high voltage pulse, or, alternately by the interruption of a high voltage, thereby permitting the car to be steered either to the left or to the right to the next adjacent slot on the track.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 1978Date of Patent: September 9, 1980Inventor: Emil H. von Winckelmann
