  • Patent number: 10654495
Abstract: A wear liner installs into a bolster center bowl without the need for welding. The wear liner includes an annular wall forming an open-ring shape that defines a gap between two edges of the wall. The wear liner has one or more protrusions that extend outwardly from the annular wall. The protrusions are sized to engage with a corresponding recess in the center bowl. The wear liner is compressible by drawing the annular wall toward a closed-ring configuration so that the wear liner can be inserted into the center bowl while exerting an expansive, radially outward force. Upon expanding, and the protrusions engage with the recess or recesses in the peripheral wall of the center bowl. This engagement, along with the expansive pressure of the wear liner against the peripheral wall of the center bowl secures the wear liner in place.

  • Patent number: 8413590
Abstract: A center bowl liner provided for use between a center plate of a railroad car and a center bowl surface on a truck bolster. The center bowl liner includes a disc-shaped element having top and bottom surfaces and a central opening for receiving a center pin. A conductive washer is attached to the disc-shaped element, the conductive washer having a profile wherein portions of the conductive washer are exposed at the top and bottom surfaces of the disc-shaped element and create an electrical connection between the railroad car center plate and the center bowl on the truck bolster. The disc-shaped element acts as a load-bearing element supporting the railroad car center plate. The conductive washer, since it may have spring-like properties, will also undertake to bear a limited amount of the load of the railroad car center plate in addition to providing electrical connection between the car and truck.

  • Patent number: 8136457
Abstract: A side bearing for use in a railroad car truck includes a cage, a resilient element within the cage, and a cap engaging an upper end of the resilient element. The cage has a bottom surface and an upturned sidewall, while the cap includes a top surface with a downturned sidewall. The downturned sidewall of the cap is at least partially received within the cage when the resilient element is in a partially compressed condition. The cap is fully received within the cage prior to the resilient element moving into a further compressed condition, such that the cage engages a car body wear plate to provide a solid stop that prevents further compression of the resilient element. One or both of the sidewalls includes wear-limiting contours that may include one or more raised pads.

  • Patent number: 8061698
Abstract: A geometric shaped side bearing pad includes a top and a surface extending an angle ? towards the top, wherein the bearing pad has a geometric shape and a non-linear spring rate which levels out a reaction force without buckling. The surface of the bearing pad can have two sides or four sides, can have spacing within the surface, or can be solid. The angle ? can be within the range of about 20 degrees and 85 degrees, and may preferably be within the range of about 30 degrees and 45 degrees to achieve non-linear load/deflection. The top of the bearing pad can have a slot defined therethrough to accommodate a protrusion in a fixture to engage the bearing pad. The bearing pad can provide a friction contact with an object and enables lateral force transfer to the bearing pad, thereby providing lateral stiffness.

  • Patent number: 6915746
Abstract: A railroad car body has a longitudinally extending center sill, and a main bolster extending transversely relative to the center sill. A center plate is mounted under the center sill at the intersection of the center sill and the main bolster. The center plate seats in the center plate bowl of a truck that supports the rail road car body for rolling motion along the rail road tracks. The center plate is a casting that has a round peripheral wall that seats entirely within the center plate bowl. None of the center plate extends beyond the round peripheral wall, and none of the center plate overhangs the peripheral upstanding steel ring of the center plate bowl wall. The center plate has a continuous circumferential welding fillet relief such as may tend more easily to permit automated welding. The center plate has a hollow, upstanding truncated central cone member for accommodating a king pin. The truncated cone stands taller than the rim.

  • Patent number: 6324995
Abstract: Center filler plates for mounting on draft sills of railway car underframes are disclosed. The center filler plates have four pockets surrounding a hub. The pockets are shallower than in the prior art, and the walls defining the pockets meet in radii having larger radii of curvature than in the prior art. The shallower pockets and larger radii of curvature facilitate removal of the casting from the molding sand in the cope and drag sections of the mold. The formation of burned-in sand is limited in the present invention, and any burned-in sand that does form is also more easily removed from the center filler plates of the present invention. The base portion of the center filler plates is not as high as in the prior art. The ribs of the center filler plate and the walls of the hub are thicker than in the prior art to provide the needed strength to the center filler plates.

  • Patent number: 6305298
Abstract: The present invention provides a lightweight draft sill end casting for use with railroad cars. The cast draft sill has side walls, front and rear stops, front and rear rib sets and a center plate that are cast as a unit. The draft sill has an open area between the tops of the side walls between the front and rear stops, with a cast metal span connecting the two side walls. The cast metal span may comprise one or more spacer bars or part of a top wall. The cast metal span is in the area between the planes of the front stops and the rear stops. The front and rear stops are spaced below the tops of the side walls. In one embodiment, there are additional lightener holes in each side wall between the ribs in the rear rib set and in the pocket. The total weight of the cast draft sill is not substantially greater than the weight of a comparable fabricated draft sill of substantially the same size, and has a greater fatigue life.
