  • Patent number: 10239542
Abstract: A hopper car discharge outflow is controlled by closure members, at least one of which is movable. The doors are hingeless, being mounted on four bar linkages, such that the distal edge of the doors sweeps predominantly horizontally while the proximal edge of the door moves predominantly upwardly. The doors move through noncircular arcs, such that the size of the vertically projected door opening is abnormally large compared to the clearance heights of the door. The doors are driven by a longitudinal shaft that is mounted within the center sill. It drives a set of single input, double output bell cranks that drive adjacent pairs of doors, and that employs an over-center toggle to hold the doors in the closed position when the car is laded. The actuators may be mounted in shelters midway along the car, and may be offset from the centersill. The actuators may be mounted predominantly vertically such that gravity may obviate the need for a secondary lock.

  • Patent number: 6286436
Abstract: A mobile cement laying machine for delivering concrete via tracks to areas which are difficult to access by truck. The mobile cement laying machine includes a carriage with a front end and a back end. A hopper is mounted to an upper side of the carriage toward the front end of the carriage. The hopper has an open top and a slot providing a lower opening into the hopper for dispensing cement from the hopper. A gate substantially closes the slot of the hopper. A pair of first rail wheels are coupled to the carriage towards the front end of the carriage. A pair of second rail wheels are coupled to the carriage towards the back end of the carriage.

  • Patent number: 6263802
Abstract: A pneumatic outlet gate of a railroad hopper car has an valve member mounted for rotation in a discharge tube between open and closed positions. The valve member is an arcuate segment terminating laterally at edge faces. The edge faces are angled such that in the upper half of the discharge tube they always slant downwardly from the surface of the tube, while in the lower half of the discharge tube the edge faces face downwardly. An arrangement of stops and abutments prevents rotation of the valve member to a location where the edge faces could trap lading against the discharge tube. Accordingly, the edge faces are self-emptying.

Abstract: A rapid discharge railcar door consisted of a plastic main body reinforced by an aluminum frame, and which provides sufficient strength against load-bearing forces and withstands changes in temperature. The main body of the door is made from a polymer in a reaction injection molding process. The door reduces the overall weight of the railway car, thus allowing more coal to be shipped per car.

  • Patent number: 6067912
Abstract: A single circular or cylindrical door is provided which covers a pair of horizontal discharge openings in a hopper car construction transversely of the longitudinal axis of the rail car. Each circular or cylindrical door is pivotally mounted to the rail car body on each side of the rail car. A fluid operated cylinder is connected to each door at the central span thereof. The other end of the fluid operated cylinder is connected to the center sill of the rail car. A directional valve controls the direction of fluid flow to the fluid operated cylinder to cause the door to rotate from a closed position blocking the pair of discharge openings to an open position whereby both discharge openings may simultaneously discharge material from the hopper car.

  • Patent number: 5829358
Abstract: A gasket assembly for sealing between a gate assembly and the bottom opening of a railroad hopper car wherein the gate assembly has a peripheral flange, and a hopper car flange surrounds the bottom opening of the railroad hopper car. The gasket includes a central band with an interior edge and exterior edge. The central band is made of a relatively rigid material. The central band contains a plurality of holes therein. An interior band of relatively softer material is bonded to the central band adjacent to the interior edge thereof. An exterior band of relatively softer material is bonded to the central band adjacent to the exterior edge thereof. Upon the assembly of the gate assembly to the bottom opening of the railroad hopper car, the interior band and the exterior band are subjected to a compressive force wherein the extent of the deformation of the interior band and the exterior band being limited by portions of the central band to which the interior band and the exterior band are bonded.

  • Patent number: 5606916
Abstract: A hopper door operating mechanism includes an arcuate closing plate mounted on an internal shaft pivotably connected to the frame of the hopper door. An operating crank has one end connected to the internal shaft and the other end pivotably connected to a link arm. The link arm has motors pivotably connected at opposite ends of the link arm. The closing plate can be rotated to open the hopper door in either direction depending on the discharge direction. To open and close the closing plate in a first direction, the first motor is operated to move the link arm and rotate the closing plate while the second motor is maintained in a closed position to retain one end of the link arm as a fulcrum point. To open and close the closing plate in the opposite direction, the second motor is operated to move the link arm while the first motor is maintained in a close position to retain end of the link arm as a fulcrum point.

  • Patent number: 5488911
Abstract: A structurally reinforced railroad car is provided which interfaces with the output of a typical refuse compactor and is capable of being thus forcibly filled with compacted refuse which efficiently fills and conforms to the interior, making maximum volumetric use of the car for efficient transportation to a disposal site. At the disposal site, hydraulic cylinders of the car cause the lid assembly of the car to pivot upwardly, leaving one side and top open, while a powered ejection panel from within the car pushes the refuse toward the open side until it falls over the edge. The car is equipped with engagable seals for containment of leachant and liquids which may form or be present in the refuse.
