Multiple Door Patents (Class 105/288)
  • Patent number: 11548537
Abstract: A centering apparatus for bi-directionally pivotable hopper doors. The apparatus is coupled between a frame of a hopper car and a bell crank of a hopper door. The apparatus includes a housing with a piston extending from one end. An end of the piston within the housing includes a piston head. A pair of coil springs are disposed within the housing on opposite sides of the piston head and counteract one another to bias the piston head toward the center of the housing and thus bias the hopper door toward a closed state. In a second configuration the apparatus includes a double-acting actuator with a pair of independent piston assemblies. An actuation system coupled to the actuator maintains the actuator and an associated hopper door in a closed position in a normal state and returns the hopper door to the closed position upon a failure in the system.

  • Patent number: 8056485
Abstract: A rail car door closer is shown for hopper type rail cars used to carry bulk commodities or materials. Cylinders provide horizontal motion to rotate an axle on which cam closers are attached thereto. The cam closers operate between a relaxed position (down position) and a raised position (up position). During rotation of the cam closers from the relaxed position to the raised position, the cam closers push hopper doors under the rail car up to a latched position. Individual hopper doors can be closed, or multiple doors can be simultaneously closed, depending on the preference of the operator. The cylinders are protected from falling bulk commodities by an elongated tent frame structure.

  • Patent number: 7832340
Abstract: The door operating system of the present invention can be applied to new railcar or retrofitted to existing railcar designs. The hopper car will have a pair of doors on opposed sides of the center sill which are connected through a door spreader. The pneumatic, individual door operating system is connected to the door spreader through an adjustable spreader fulcrum in which the sliding adjustment may add in a proper connection force or tension between the door operating system and the individual doors.

  • Publication number: 20100258030
Abstract: An improved rail car door closer system is provided wherein the movement of a number of appropriately positioned closer wing plates into contact with a number of open rail car hopper doors, is accomplished with hydraulic cylinders and motors. The system incorporates components that direct both the rotation of the wing closers (around a cylindrical frame so as to position the wing closers in and out of position for door closure), and the translation of the wing closers (along the longitudinal cylindrical frame so as to effect the actual closing of the hopper doors). The system is arranged to close more than one door at a time and in the preferred embodiment includes three simultaneously operated door closer wing structures. The heavy duty cylindrical frame incorporates a number of cylindrical outer segments sized to fit around and on the inner cylindrical frame. The segments are directed to rotate and translate on the inner cylindrical frame.

  • Patent number: 7752979
Abstract: A hopper car having an increased volume. The car has side walls, end walls, a bottom, and first and second sloping surfaces. The bottom lies at least partially in a horizontal plane and includes a plurality of spaced apart openings. The side walls, end walls, and horizontal plane define a volume X. The first and second sloping surfaces are located between adjacent openings and joined to the bottom adjacent the openings. The sloping surfaces extend upwardly from the bottom to present an inverted V enclosing a volume Y. The volume Y is no more than approximately 1 to 5% of the volume X.

  • Patent number: 7559283
Abstract: A track mounted system for closing rail car doors that enables the simultaneous closing of multiple car doors. After hopper car contents such as aggregate or coal are unloaded, the doors are closed in pairs by semi-automated door closing arms that are positioned on the track and are operated by hydraulic cylinders, pneumatic cylinders, or electric motors. The closing arms may be added in pairs depending on the number of doors. Hydraulic cylinders with a differential bell crank can be used to activate the closer arm assemblies. Closer arms can be mounted side by side on the inside or outside of the track or separately inside and outside of the track. Automatic slack adjustment assemblies may be integrated into the closer arm connections to allow for off set door spacing. Individual hydraulic cylinders may be used with each closer arm in an alternate embodiment.

  • Patent number: 5299508
Abstract: A closer for closing the doors of a railroad hopper car has two closer assemblies. The assemblies are mounted adjacent to each rail of a track on a frame which passes below and between the rails. Each assembly includes a hydraulic closer jack, a hydraulic lifting jack and a hydraulic swing motor for orienting the closer jack relative to a door. • Patent number: 4437798
Abstract: Valve means are provided in a discharge opening movable between a closed position blocking communication between a hopper compartment and a discharge conduit. The valve means comprises a segment of an arc which in a closed position spans the distance between outlet slope sheets and is rotatable to an open position located generally below one of the outlet slope sheets. Each arcuate segment is actuated by a gear means. Preferably a worm gear is located above the arcuate segment. A worm gear drive extends transversely of the outlet and is journalled for rotation in bearings sealed with respect to the interior of the outlet. Preferably the worm gear drive is hollow and an activating shaft is located within the worm gear drive which extends outwardly of the outlet side wall slope sheet and at this outlet end includes an operating handle. A first inner portion of the actuating shaft includes first gear engaging means such as a non-round portion which is adapted to engage a non-round end portion of the gear drive.

  • Patent number: 3931768
Abstract: A novel hopper vehicle, illustratively a freight hopper car, has a floor with two longitudinal hoppers and a pair of side-opening doors on opposite sides of the center line of the vehicle. Each door provides a part of one of the hoppers and is pivotally mounted on a side sill of the vehicle. Preferably each door is a wrap-around door to provide also a lower part of a side of the body of the vehicle and its pivotal mounting is on an intermediate side sill that extends between the sloping end walls of the body of the vehicle at an intermediate elevation. The body of the vehicle has fixed side walls. For the central portion of the floor of the car body there is a longitudinally-extending, inverted V-shaped panel that is mounted above the intermediate portion of the center sill of the car and that provides by its sloping walls the other part of the hoppers. In the construction with wrap-around doors the fixed side walls form only a part of the sides of the body.
