  • Patent number: 6019049
Abstract: A discharge door assembly for a bottom dump covered railroad hopper car is provided. The discharge door assembly includes a plurality of longitudinally mounted discharge doors arranged in end-to-end relation across a bottom of the hopper car; with each discharge door being movable between open and closed positions about a pivot axis disposed parallel to and adjacent a longitudinal axis of the hopper car. A door operating mechanism including a single powered actuator operates all of the discharge doors substantially simultaneously to effect rapid discharge of matter from the hopper with significantly less operator involvement. The door operating mechanism further includes a lock for releasably holding the discharge doors in a closed position. A venting system inhibits imploding of the walls of the hopper car upon discharge of particulate matter from the car.

  • Patent number: 5823118
Abstract: The invention relates to a bottom discharge arrangement intended for mounting on goods container of a railway truck. The arrangement includes at least one pair of flaps which is pivotally mounted on the goods container at their mutually remote edges, so as to be able to swing between an open and a closed position in a plane perpendicular to the edges. The arrangement includes a two-arm lever which is common to the link systems and which functions to maneuver the flaps simultaneously. The lever arm is pivotally mounted centrally at a point between the pivot axes of the flaps and is pivotally connected at one end to a first link pivotally mounted on one flap and at the other end is pivotally connected to a second link pivotally mounted on the other flap. When the flaps are closed, the pivot points between the parts of the link system lie in an essentially forceless state of equilibrium in a common plane which is locked in this state of equilibrium by an operating device coacting with the link system.

  • Patent number: 5606916
Abstract: A hopper door operating mechanism includes an arcuate closing plate mounted on an internal shaft pivotably connected to the frame of the hopper door. • Patent number: 5237934
Abstract: The present invention is a control device that allows an operator to partially open a gate valve found at the bottom of a railway freight car hopper in order to obtain a sample of a flowable particulate or granular product contained within the hopper but preventing the gate valve from fully opening so as to partially unload the hopper. The device is provided with a rotatable operating shaft having attaching to it a structure for opening and closing the gate valve in response to rotation of the operating shaft. The operating shaft is provided with two ends that extend through end panels of the hopper. One of the two ends is provided with a lockable sample control handle and the second of the two ends is provided with an angled slot by which a lockable control handle movably attaches. The angled slot allows the operating shaft to be rotated when the control handle is locked closed by unlocking and turning the sample control handle.

  • Patent number: 4508037
Abstract: In a railway hopper car with several bottom dump doors, the doors are operated by a main door operating member in the form of a thrust bar running the length of the car. The bar, when moved, rotates levers which rotate actuator shafts which move door operating linkage arrangements, opening and closing the dump doors. An adjustable positioning structure is provided on each lever to cause adjustment of the individual dump door positions. The adjustment is accomplished by tightening or loosening bolts in the adjustor, which is fixed on an actuator shaft running to the linkage arrangement. The adjustor and actuator shaft rotate on a bearing with respect to the lever, but are held in locked adjusted position by the adjustor bolts abutting on flanges welded to the lever.
