Turbine Patents (Class 105/38)
  • Patent number: 9714800
Abstract: A body comprising at least two components having one or more different properties and a method of producing the same are disclosed. One of the body components is in the form of particles with optional adhesive interlayers. A second of the components has a surface locally melted in a predetermined pattern and only to a predetermined depth by scanning an electron beam there across to incorporate the particles and form a metal composite film. Thereby, a predetermined volumetric concentration of the incorporated particles varies continuously from the locally melted surface so as to provide two surfaces in the body having different coefficients of thermal expansion.

  • Patent number: 9677457
Abstract: A vehicle has at least one component which is cooled by a cooling air mass flow delivered from a conveying device such as a fan or a spoiler. A nominal value is predetermined for the cooling air mass flow which, for an assumed maximum thermal loading of the component, cools adequately for operation of the component. A control device controls an intensity of the cooling air mass flow and dimensions it, taking into consideration thermal demands of the component at least in an upper driving speed range, such that a sum of a power consumption of the component, of the conveying device and of a portion of a traction power of the vehicle that is allotted to the delivery of the cooling air mass flow is smaller than a sum of the power consumption of the component, the conveying device and the portion that is allotted to the delivery of the cooling air mass flow at the predetermined nominal value thereof, of a traction power of the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 8667899
Abstract: A combined cycle power plant for a railway locomotive is disclosed. In one embodiment, the power plant comprises two prime movers operating independently of one another. The waste energy of one prime mover is used as the energy source of the other prime mover. The shaft work of each prime mover is connected to a common load. The shaft work of the first prime mover is directly connected to the load, whereas the shaft work of the second prime mover is selectively coupled or decoupled to the load using a clutch.

  • Patent number: 7059841
Abstract: An arrangement of an oil-free compressor apparatus on a rail vehicle for supplying compressed air to pneumatic units assigned to the rail vehicle. The arrangement includes an oil-free compressor and a cooler unit connected with the compressor. The arrangement also includes a rail vehicle having a floor with at least one opening. The compressor is fastened on at least one side to the vehicle floor such that a main axis of rotation of the compressor is arranged essentially vertical with respect to the vehicle floor. The cooler unit interacts with the at least one opening that is configured to take in cooling air to cool the compressor.

  • Patent number: 6397759
Abstract: A locomotive is described including a frame having a wall with a roof and floor defining an enclosed space thereon. A turbine engine is disposed within the enclosed space. An air inlet is provided to permit ingress of air into the enclosed space for ingestion by the turbine and for circulation around the turbine to cool the turbine. A first silencer is disposed between the air inlet and the turbine to minimize noise generated by the turbine. An exhaust duct, for connection to the exhaust outlet of the turbine, is also provided to permit egress of exhaust gases generated by the turbine from the enclosed space. In addition, a second silencer, connected to the exhaust duct, is provided to minimize noise generated by the turbine. Finally, at least one of the wall, roof, and floor of the enclosed space incorporate noise dampening materials to minimize noise generated by the turbine. An enclosure assembly for a turbine is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4425763
Abstract: A coal-fired steam locomotive powered by reciprocating steam engines. The locomotive is a two-unit drawbar-coupled locomotive. The units, which are designated as a power unit and a support unit, are arranged back-to-back, with each having a cab-in-front. Operation of the locomotive is equally effective in both directions. The power unit basically contains a furnace and combustion system, an ash storage system, a gas cleanup and exhaust system, a boiler and steam generator, steam engines, a jet condenser, and a control cab. The support unit, on two 6-wheel trucks, contains a modular coal storage area, a stoker motor, a water storage area, heat transfer assemblies and fans for air-cooling circulating water, and a second control cab. The coal-gasification furnace, steam boiler, and steam engines are all in a closed system. Further, the steam engines of the locomotive are in the form of a four cylinder, balanced system for driving the running gear of the locomotive.
