Patent number: 10341483Abstract: A method and mobile transceiver providing container security is described. In accordance with one aspect, there is provided a method of operating a mobile transceiver comprising a processor, memory, wireless transceiver and radiation detector. The method comprises detecting, by the radiation detector, radiation emitted from a radioactive emitter. The radiation detector and the radioactive emitter are arranged such that a substantially constant rate of radiation from the radioactive emitter is detected when one or more doors of the shipping container are closed. When the detected radiation is outside a tolerance of the constant rate, the processor wakes up the processor from a low power mode, and updates an asset tracking log stored in the memory by adding a record representing a door open event.Type: GrantFiled: August 8, 2016Date of Patent: July 2, 2019Assignee: BlackBerry LimitedInventors: Jeffrey Alton Hugh Dods, Robert George Oliver, Nazih Almalki

Patent number: 9410372Abstract: An alarm system for rolling shutter comprised of plurality of alarm sensors is described. An alarm sensor is comprised of a conductive wire that is threaded within a slat and is connected in both sides to slat edge elements. The slat edge elements have a moving electrical contact that can be pulled out towards the inner wall of the shutter rail by a magnet. In selected heights along the rails, on both rails, a rail electric element comprising a magnet and a rail electrical contact are installed. A wire is connected from each rail electrical contact to an alarm control box. When the slat, which includes the slat-wire, is positioned in the same height as the rail electric elements, the moving contact on the slat makes a contact with the rail electric contact, thus creating a continuous electrical circuit from one rail electrical contact, through the slat, to the second rail electric contact.Type: GrantFiled: October 3, 2013Date of Patent: August 9, 2016Assignee: B.M.S. Patent number: 6845874Abstract: A collision attenuator for a vehicle including an energy absorbing cylinder, a mounting assembly adapted to secure the energy absorbing cylinder to an end of the vehicle, a contact plate mounted to the energy absorbing cylinder, a control valve for extending and retracting the energy absorbing cylinder in order to move the contact plate with respect to the end of the vehicle. A comparator is operably coupled with the control valve, wherein the comparator is configured to adjust the energy absorbing cylinder based upon a speed signal indicative of the speed of the moving vehicle. A coupler detector is operably coupled with the control valve, wherein the coupler detector inhibits the extension of the energy absorbing cylinder unless the coupler detector determines that the coupler is open. A pivot assembly pivotally secures the contact plate to the energy absorbing cylinder allowing the contact plate to pivot laterally about an upright axis with respect to the energy absorbing cylinder.Type: GrantFiled: June 13, 2003Date of Patent: January 25, 2005Inventors: Thomas S. Patent number: 6814246Abstract: A collision attenuating system for a moving vehicle including an energy-absorbing airbag assembly dimensioned and configured for attenuating the impact between the moving vehicle and a pedestrian or an impacted vehicle located in or crossing the path of the moving vehicle as the pedestrian or impacted vehicle impacts against the airbag assembly, a mounting bracket dimensioned and configured for being affixed to the moving vehicle, an engagement bracket affixed to the airbag assembly and engagable with the mounting bracket, and a quick-release fastener for removably engaging the engagement bracket to the mounting bracket for removably mounting the airbag assembly to the moving vehicle. The airbag assembly includes an airbag and an assembly frame supporting the airbag, a speed sensor for determining the speed of the vehicle, and a pressure regulator for controlling a pressure function of the airbag responsive to the speed sensor.Type: GrantFiled: June 10, 2003Date of Patent: November 9, 2004Inventors: Thomas S. Patent number: 6619491Abstract: A train collision attenuator mounted on a leading end of a train for attenuating the force of impact between a moving train and a pedestrian or motor vehicle. The train collision attenuator includes an energy absorbing assembly and a mounting assembly. The energy absorbing assembly includes a leading surface and the energy absorbing assembly is dimensioned and configured for attenuating the force of impact between the moving train and the pedestrian located in the path of the moving train as the pedestrian impacts against the leading surface. The mounting assembly secures the energy absorbing assembly to the leading end of the train. A lifting mechanism for moving the energy absorbing assembly between a deployed position to a retracted position is also provided. A selectively-inflatable, externally-mounted airbag including an upper pedestrian cushioning portion and a lower pedestrian support portion is also provided.Type: GrantFiled: October 1, 2002Date of Patent: September 16, 2003Inventors: Thomas S. Payne, James M. Payne

Patent number: 6293205Abstract: A train collision system helps reduce the severity of impact between a train and a land vehicle or pedestrian. The system uses a flatbed rail car that is coupled to the front of a train. Several deformable barrels, each at least partially filled with an inert material, are attached to the top surface of the rail car, the barrels each decelerating an object that strikes them. A pair of diagonally downwardly disposed arms extend out from the front of the rail car and are used to either deflect the object out of the trains path or to scoop the object onto the rail car wherein the object is decelerated by the barrels. A net member subsystem captures relatively small objects and nets them before the object strikes the barrels.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 2000Date of Patent: September 25, 2001Inventor: Paul A. Patent number: 5307744Abstract: A magnetic skirt assembly is provided which is used as a metallic particle and grit collector on a railroad car to protect transported products. The magnetic skirt (20) includes a supporting frame structure (21) and a magnetic material (36) operatively attached thereto. The magnetic skirt is installed on the underside of the railroad car, preferably one skirt at each end of the railroad car adjacent to the outboard side of the wheel trucks. The magnetic skirts of the invention attract and collect fine metallic particles and grit on their magnetic surfaces which come off the railroad bed during transit of the railroad car. The design of the magnetic skirt particularly addresses the primary flow of air through the railroad car wheel trucks directed outboard and the airstream carrying the metallic particles flowing upward between rail cars which can potentially enter the gaps in the railroad car end doors. Periodically, the magnetic skirts can be cleaned or rinsed off to remove the accumulated grit or particles.Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 1992Date of Patent: May 3, 1994Assignee: Burlington Northern Railroad CompanyInventors: Ronald R. Patent number: 5092250Abstract: An anti-pilferage device is attached to the car body of a railroad flatcar of the type for carrying containers. The device has a mounting plate attached to the car frame at a point adjacent the doors of a container loaded on the car. A barrier is tiltably supported on the mounting plate in a manner which permits free movement if the barrier is bumped during loading of a container. The barrier is movable between a raised, operative position and a lowered, retracted position. A spring biases the barrier to the operative position, wherein it is in the path of a swinging container door to prevent it from being opened. In the retracted position the barrier is below the level of the container floor. A plurality of anti-pilferage devices may be mounted on the car to accommodate containers of various lengths. The barriers are automatically movable between the retracted position and operative position without the need for manual actuation.Type: GrantFiled: November 1, 1990Date of Patent: March 3, 1992Assignee: TTX CompanyInventor: William R.
