Variable Driver Load Patents (Class 105/75)
  • Patent number: 11370465
Abstract: A method for reducing slack in a linkage chain of a vehicle truck assembly is provided. In one example, the method includes responding to a request to de-lift a lift mechanism by reducing pressure in an actuator coupled to the lift mechanism, where the lift mechanism is configured to transfer a load from a first axle to a second axle of the vehicle during the de-lift, and during the de-lift, maintaining the pressure in the actuator at or above a threshold pressure to maintain tension in a weight transfer device of the lift mechanism.

Abstract: A locomotive (or other rail vehicle) truck and method for distributing weight asymmetrically to axles of the truck includes a first axle of a truck uncoupled from a traction system of the locomotive and a first suspension assembly coupling the first axle to the truck for applying to the first axle a first portion of a locomotive weight. The truck also includes a second axle coupled to the traction system and a second suspension assembly coupling the second axle to the truck for applying a second portion of the locomotive weight to the second axle that is greater than the first portion so that weight is asymmetrically distributed to the first axle and the second axle so as to transmit a corresponding incremental amount of tractive effort for a given amount of a driving torque applied to the second axle via the traction system of the locomotive. The axle weight distribution involves relatively slight weight distribution compared to the nominal weights normally carried by the axles.

  • Patent number: 8371232
Abstract: A system and method for modification of a baseline ballast arrangement of a locomotive (or other rail vehicle) having an overall tractive effort rating based on symmetrical distribution of weight and driving torque applied by the locomotive to the respective axles of the locomotive. The system includes a locomotive (or other rail vehicle) truck comprising an un-powered first axle and a powered second axle. The system also includes a first suspension assembly configured to apply to the first axle a first portion of a locomotive weight and a second suspension assembly configured to apply to the second axle a second portion of the locomotive weight different from the first portion. Abstract: A front end portion 100 is disposed on the front end of a car body. The floor thereof consists of hollow shape members 200 that construct a shock absorber 200. The shock absorber 200 includes an upper shock absorber 200 and a lower shock absorber 200. Annealed hollow shape members are used to form the hollow shape member 210. The hollow shape members 210 have their longitudinal directions disposed along the longitudinal directions of the car body. Plural hollow shape members 210 are arranged next to one another in the width direction, and bonded together by friction stir welding. When the hollow shape members receive impact load, the members 210 deform into an accordion-like shape, absorbing the impact force. At this time, the friction stir welded portions also receive the impact force, but dislike other weld joints, cracks are not created at the friction-stir-weld joints, and the weld joints do not prevent the hollow shape members 210 from deforming into an accordion-like shape.

  • Patent number: 6324993
Abstract: A railcar moving vehicle having a load-shifting device for shifting a portion of the weight of a railcar to the railcar moving vehicle. The railcar moving vehicle has a frame, an engine, and at least one pair of drive wheels disposed toward the rearward portion of the frame and configured to ride on railroad track. The load-shifting device is connected to the vehicle frame rearward of the drive wheels, and includes a rearward facing coupler which is configured to transmit vertical and horizontal forces to a coupled railcar. The coupler is moveable by means of the load shifting device between a first lowered position for coupling with a standard railcar coupler, and a second position above and forward of the first position, thereby imposing a portion of the weight of the railcar upon the frame of the railcar moving vehicle, and moving the bearing point of the weight closer to above the drive wheels.

Abstract: A rail truck for use in an elevated closed beam having a slot in the bottom surface for clearance of a car body support member. The passenger car body is hung beneath the beam and elevated above the ground with the trucks running inside the beam. The flanged wheels run on a pair of parallel rails with an electric power rail located above the center of the two running rails. The suspension permits restrained swinging of the passenger car in the lateral and longitudinal directions. A safety wheel is mounted to the frame to prevent upward movement of the frame to the extent that the wheel flanges on the running rails could climb over the top of the running rails. A pair of auxiliary climbing rails are mounted parallel to the power rail and above the running rails. Auxiliary climbing wheels on the truck are mounted on actuators which permit a controlled elevation of the auxiliary climbing wheels.

  • Patent number: 5331900
Abstract: A trolley, particularly a monorail trolley having a short structural height includes travel wheels which travel on a lower flange of a rail. The trolley further includes a lifting mechanism arranged on a support frame and a driveable friction wheel which can be pressed through a spring element against the lower flange of the rail. One of the travel wheels and the friction wheel are arranged on a rocker member for a load-dependent increase of the frictional engagement between the rail and the travel wheel and the friction wheel. As seen in travel direction, the friction wheel is spaced from the travel wheel. The rocker member is arranged laterally next to the lower flange and is connected to the support frame so as to be pivotable about an axis. Arranged between the support frame and the rocker member is an adjusting member for changing the distance between the axis and the lower flange. The friction wheel and the travel wheel are connected so as to be triable together.

  • Patent number: 5301615
Abstract: A railcar moving vehicle having a hydraulic system for raising the vehicle coupler while coupled to a railroad car or the like to transfer weight from the railcar to the vehicle. By this invention, fluid pressure in the hydraulic power line is sensed, to monitor an increase in the fluid pressure as the hydraulic system raises the vehicle coupler while coupled to a railcar. Then, when a substantial termination of the increase in fluid pressure is sensed as the hydraulic coupler is raised, an indicator signals the occurrence of this event, typically by automatically terminating the hydraulic raising of the vehicle coupler. Thus, weight may be transferred without overraising the railcar, without the need for estimating the weight of the railcar prior to the weight transfer process.
