Abstract: A multifunctional broad spectrum antimicrobial composition is described. The composition can be incorporated into a wood preservative, or used as an additive to provide antimicrobial properties to water-based wood coatings. The composition is a concentrated water-miscible emulsion containing 3-iodo-2-propynyl N-butylcarbamate (IPBC), carbendazim (BCM) and propiconazole (PPCZ), and has antimicrobial activity against a wide variety of fungal organisms, including surface molds, blue stain fungi and wood rotting fungi. The composition can act as an in-can preservative and is useful for antimicrobial protection of wood and wood-based substrates.
Abstract: A method of forming a coating on a substrate is provided comprising forming a lignin solution by at least partially dissolving lignin in a solvent, coating the lignin solution onto the substrate and exposing the lignin coated substrate to a treatment selected from the group consisting of a heat treatment and an acid treatment. The coating provides for improved waterproofing and/or strengthening of the substrate.

Abstract: Compositions that include hydrophobizing agents and stabilizers and methods for making and using same are provided. In at least one specific embodiment, a composition can include about 40 wt % to about 60 wt % lignosulfonic acid or a salt thereof, about 1 wt % to about 20 wt % of a hydrophobizing agent, and about 20 wt % to about 59 wt % of a liquid medium, where all weight percents are based on the combined weight of the lignosulfonic acid or salt thereof, the hydrophobizing agent, and the liquid medium.

Abstract: Delignification of biomass consisting of plants containing lignin is done by utilizing an amino compound in an aqueous solution or emulsion to produce water soluble amino lignin and non-soluble amino lignin cellulose which are utilized to produce adhesives and resins for use to produce wood composites and carbohydrate production.
Abstract: The present invention concerns an aqueous binder for a fiber mat, in particular mineral fibers, which comprises, in parts by weight: 20 to 95 parts of at least one lignosulfonic acid salt; 5 to 80 parts of at least one oligosaccharide; and 5 to 20 parts of a curing catalyst selected from compounds containing phosphorus and sulfates per 100 parts of lignosulfonic acid salt and of oligosaccharide. It also concerns the products resulting from treatment of the fibers, especially mineral fibers, with said binder.

Abstract: A viscous composition for making a layer and/or a coating for a road track or a building, and containing a viscous fraction. The viscous fraction mainly contains vegetable pitch, in particular tall oil pitch, and a phenolic modified rosin.
Abstract: Various methods for forming structural composites are disclosed. For example, a particular method may include adding an effective amount of algae extract to an aggregate mixture so as to provide a plasticizer to the aggregate mixture, and processing the aggregate mixture to form a hardened composite.
Abstract: An adhesive composition that can be used in particleboards and other composites is formed from an aqueous mixture of soy protein, zinc sulfate heptahydrate, calcium oxide, sodium benzoate, pine oil, wax emulsion and non-sulfonated kraft lignin. In a second embodiment the composition further includes an acid.

Abstract: A foundry mold and the method of making it is disclosed and claimed. Black liquor is extracted from a pulping process and used as a resin which when combined with an aggregate forms a foundry mold, foundry core or a briquette. The black liquor can be combined with another material to accelerate the cure and to resist moisturization of the mold, core or briquette.
