  • Publication number: 20120177884
Abstract: A coating solution for textured surfaces can comprise water, a water-soluble or water-dispersible organic binder which preferably is radiation curable, and a dispersion of particles and/or their preformed aggregates having a refractive index either larger, matching, or smaller than a refractive index of the organic binder or its cured polymer. Two refractive indices can be chosen, depending upon whether a textured surface appearance of frost, transparency, or ultralow reflectivity, respectively, is desired. Water evaporation from energy curable coatings can be used, preferably containing a high loading of insoluble and/or non-swelling particles and their aggregates, at least one of whose dimensions are preferably larger than the dried film, so as to expose these particles or their aggregates at the surface and cure the film to lock them into place. The coating solution can be used to achieve a textured coated result useable in direct (and indirect) food contact.

Abstract: This invention provides both void-filling pellets and packaging board that are environmentally compatible and biodegradable. They are made from starch and cellulose fiber, potentially from recycled paper Extruded Pulp Fiber shell waste The void-filling pellets have a hard outer shell and a foamed interior. This makes them resilient to crushing, while at the same time reversibly compressible, providing protection for the item inside the packaging. The reinforced packaging board also has a hard outer shell and a foamed interior, and is reinforced by way of a multi-laminate or corrugated structure. Both the pellets and the board are made by an extrusion process that creates the outer layer and fills the interior with foam.

  • Patent number: 8053216
Abstract: A new method to produce formulations of bacterial cellulose that exhibit improved viscosity-modifying properties particularly with low energy applied to effectuate viscosity changes therewith is provided. Such a method includes the novel co-precipitation with a water soluble co-agent that permits precipitation in the presence of excess alcohol to form an insoluble fiber that can than be utilized as a thickener or suspension aid without the need to introduce high energy mixing. Such bacterial cellulose properties have been available in the past but only through highly labor and energy intensive processes. Such an inventive method as now proposed thus provides a bacterial cellulose-containing formulation that exhibits not only properties that are as effective as those for previous bacterial celluloses, but, in some ways, improvements to such previous types. Certain end-use compositions and applications including these novel bacterial cellulose-containing formulations are also encompassed within this invention.
