Abstract: A friction material for use as a brake lining in automobiles, trucks, buses or similar vehicles. The brake lining contains no more than traces of asbestos and utilizes the mineral vermiculite as a basic constituent. The formulation of the brake lining comprises a non-fibrous natural or synthetic mineral or mineral-like material which on being compressed at ambient temperatures and at pressures of 1700 to 2600 p.s.i. has significant green strength in the order of 2 to 25 p.s.i. and also has appropriate thermal resistance, frictional properties, and shear and flexural strengths, together with a thermosetting resin as the basic components together with other organic and inorganic materials as friction modifiers and fillers. The mineral preferably comprises vermiculite, and together with the resin comprises preferably about 35% to 100% by weight of the brake lining formulation. The ratio by weight of resin to vermiculite is preferably in a range having a upper limit not exceeding about 1.2/l to 1.
Abstract: An aerosol paint system under sprayable pressures in the container is provided comprising two film-forming polymeric binders. One of the two being monomer modified alkyd resin of relatively low molecular weight having an acid value (before neutralization with selected bases) of about 40 to 80 and the second polymeric binder of water-reducible nature being an emulsion polymer latex of high molecular weight, but capable of forming a continuous film in the total aerosol paint system aided by the monomer modified alkyd and a selection from co-solvents including in a first group low molecular weight alcohols, ketones, and esters and in a second group the co-solvents illustrated by the Cellosolves, Cellosolve acetates and other esters and the Carbitols as to chemical class.Pressures essential to spray application are principally provided by dimethyl ether and closely related ethers as a class.
Abstract: A process for dyeing high-molecular organic material in the bulk characterized by the use of a 1,4-diketo-pyrrolo[3,4-c]-pyrrole of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are isocyclic or heterocyclic aromatic radicals, preferably unsubstituted or substituted phenyl or naphthyl radicals. The dyeings obtained, for example in plastics, fibres, lacquers and printings, are distinguished by very high coloring strength, high saturation, good dispersibility, good fastness to cross-lacquering, migration, heat, light and weather, and also by a high gloss and a good IR-remission behavior.
Abstract: Disclosed is a high solids single-package air-dryable primer containing about 15 to about 30% by weight air-dryable synthetic alkyd resin, about 10 to about 30% by weight organic solvents for the resin, at least about 0.4% by weight of a suspending agent, at least about 1 pbw of a polar additive for every pbw of the suspending agent, at least about 3% by weight of a coloring pigment, at least about 15% by weight of a corrosion inhibitor, at least about 0.3% by weight of a dryer, and about 30 to about 40% by weight of an extender pigment. The primer is prepared by mixing enough of the alkyd resin to wet the coloring pigment with enough of the solvent to optimize sheer. The suspending agent and polar additive are then added followed by the corrosion inhibitor and wetting agent. The coloring pigment is then added and the composition is ground to satisfactory particle size. Finally, the remaining ingredients are mixed in.
Abstract: A high gloss water-base coating composition suitable for exterior and interior paint and screen printing ink. Such composition comprises water; at least two vinyltoluene co-polymers containing safflower oil fatty acid, isophthalic acid polyester and trimellitic acid; a basic solution having a pH of 7.8 to 10.5; two co-solvents; water soluble drying agents; and pigments.
Abstract: A low infrared emitting coating for use on metal surfaces and compatible with both organic and inorganic binders. The coating is of a color corresponding to the standard Navy haze-gray color and exhibits an infrared reflectance in excess of the standard Navy haze paint.
Abstract: Method for renewal of grout utilizing a composition comprising a surfactant a pigment and a water-soluble or water-dispersible organic binding agent and a method for renewing grout.

Abstract: An additive for admixture with road surface preparation materials to prevent formation of ice and to melt snow on the finished road surface. The additive is distributed throughout the road surface and comprises coated particles of a halide, e.g. calcium chloride, coated particles of an alkali metal hydroxide, e.g. sodium hydroxide and a trace of coated or uncoated particles of calcium hydride, the coatings being of a water-tight inert substance such as linseed oil. These coatings are worn away at the road surface by traffic to expose the particles.
Abstract: Isoindolinone pigments of the formula ##STR1## WHEREIN R represents an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic radical, a cycloaliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic radical to which the oxygen atoms are attached through alkyl or alkoxy groups, V.sub.1 and V.sub.2 represent hydrogen or halogen atoms, alkyl or alkoxy groups of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, X represents a halogen atom, Y and Z represent halogen atoms, alkoxy or alkylmercapto groups of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, cycloalkoxy groups of 5 to 6 carbon atoms, aralkoxy, aryloxy or arylmercapto groups, and n is an integer from 2 to 6, are valuable pigments coloring plastics, lacquers and printing inks in various yellow shades of excellent fastness properties and high color strength.
Abstract: An easy dispersing alkali blue type pigment product and a process for making the same is provided which retains the color strength per unit alkali blue present of a flushed color product, but which contains less oil phase than a flushed color and is a free-flowing powder. The pigment can be very easily dispersed in oleoresinous systems such as printing inks, paints, plastics and the like to develop an outstanding fineness of grind and substantially full color strength. The pigmentary product of this invention is free-flowing and contains at least about 50% by weight of alkali blue pigment solids, and preferably more, coprecipitated with at least one organic dispersant of the anionic class containing at least eight carbon atoms, said dispersant is soluble in aqueous alkaline solutions and precipitated therefrom upon acidification.
Abstract: A paving composition comprising asphalt and micro-granular coal which are uniformly combined integrally with each other without thermal decomposition of said coal and a method for producing a paving composition which comprises triturating a mixture of asphalt and coal at a temperature below the thermal decomposition point of the coal thereby to reduce the diameter of the resulting micro-granular coal to 1 to 100.mu. and, at the same time, to achieve the uniform integral combination of asphalt and coal. Thereby, there is provided a paving composition which is excellent in thermal stability, weather resistance, adhesive property, sticking strength, viscoelasticity and workability. Moreover, besides the main components, asphalt and coal, various modifying agents or additives may be further incorporated so that the properties of the paving composition can be further improved.
Abstract: A process is disclosed for dissolving an organic color-reactive colorless dye in a high concentration in an oil and simultaneously stabilizing the solution therefrom, characterized by acting an organic peroxide on said dye.

Abstract: A diglycidyl ether of a diphenol, such as a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A, is reacted with bisphenol S to form a chain-extended epoxy resin. This chain-extended epoxy resin is then esterified with a fatty acid derived from a drying oil, such as linseed oil fatty acid. The resulting epoxy resin ester is cut with a solvent for use as a rapid drying coating material. A primer using this material is also disclosed.
