  • Patent number: 9327992
Abstract: A pigment particle composition which comprises calcium carbonate particles and pigment particles, its method of manufacture and its use. According to the present invention, the calcium carbonate particles are carbonated so that they bind to each other, in which case calcium carbonate structures are generated, which comprise pigment particles and which form essentially opaque and stable pigment-calcium carbonate aggregates. It is possible to manufacture the composition by atomizing calcium hydroxide-bearing pigment slurry into a carbon dioxide-bearing gas, in which case the calcium hydroxide is carbonated in order to precipitate the calcium hydroxide particles to be attached to each other and the carbonation is continued until essentially all of the calcium hydroxide has been converted into calcium carbonate. The composition is suitable for use, among others, in paints, coating materials, fillers, polymers and printing inks.

  • Patent number: 8858701
Abstract: The invention relates to the manufacture of pigment-containing composite pigment particles containing titanium dioxide pigment particles and at least one inorganic and/or organic filler as extender, as well as calcium carbonate that is precipitated in the process, and their use for improving the pigment light-scattering efficiency in coatings, plastics and laminates. The extender is preferably selected from Ca-, Ca—Mg- and Mg-carbonates, natural and synthetic silicon dioxide and oxides and are manufactured in a combined process of precipitation and dispersion. Depending on the combination selected, the use of composite pigment particles according to the invention permits pigment savings with little or no loss of optical properties. Alternatively, if the pigment content remains unchanged, it is possible to achieve better values, e.g. for tinting strength. Particularly, a part or the whole TiO2 quantity in the user system can be replaced by the composite pigment particles according to the invention.

Abstract: Titanium dioxide-calcium carbonate composite particles capable of realizing characteristic properties inherent in titanium dioxide such as a high opacity, a process for producing the same, and a complex composition or complex incorporated with the same are provided. The composite particles were prepared by adding titanium dioxide particles having an average particle diameter of 0.1 to 0.5 &mgr;m in a carbonation step, typically a step of introducing a gaseous mixture of carbon dioxide and air into a calcium hydroxide slurry with stirring, to conduct a carbonation, and continuing the reaction till pH of the slurry becomes 7 by continuous introduction of the gaseous mixture. Moreover, by incorporating the formed composite particles, complexes such as coatings and paints for paper making or composite materials such as paper, plastic molded materials, and rubber molded materials are produced.

  • Patent number: 6387498
Abstract: A flake-based pigment is provided having improved specular reflectance characteristics in the visible wavelength range. The flake-based pigment has a plurality of core flake sections each formed of a central reflector layer and dielectric support layers on opposing sides of the reflector layer. The resulting core flake section is a very thin three-layered structure that exhibits a uniaxial compressive strength much greater than a corresponding uniaxial tensile strength. This structure provides the benefits of rigidity and brittle fracture during manufacturing and application processes, which ultimately provides favorable planar and specular reflectance characteristics for the pigment in the visible wavelength range. A variety of outer coating layers can be formed around the core flake sections, such as various dielectric and absorber layers having thicknesses dependent upon the desired optical characteristics of the pigment.
