  • Patent number: 6973886
Abstract: A bedding foundation is manufactured with a cover having a welt cord extending upwardly to create a seal when a mattress is placed on the foundation. The cover is made using a two stage process. During the first stage a sewing machine is used to join a welt cord to a web of border material. In the second stage a second sewing machine sews a piece of non-skid decking to the border assembly. Fullness may be incorporated into the border material to enable the cover to fit around the corners of the bedding foundation with the welt cord being spaced inwardly from the perimeter of the foundation.

  • Patent number: 5540167
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a sealable cloth pouch having an opening on one side and consisting of two cloth parts to be sewn together uses several piping segments corresponding in number and length essentially to the edges of the cloth pouch which is to be stitched. The seams of the cloth pouch runs substantially linearly along the edges of the pouch into the corners thereof but not around the corners. The piping segments overlap each other in the corner areas to create substantially rounded edges. The apparatus for manufacturing the cloth pouch includes a device to feed the cloth parts together, a device to insert the various piping segments, a device to stitch the piping segments and a device to create an incision to facilitate overlapping the piping segments.

  • Patent number: 5400729
Abstract: A sewing apparatus combines an elastic band with a non-elastic draw cord to form a composite band. The apparatus includes a sewing machine for sewing the draw cord to one surface of the elastic band. The sewing machine forms a plurality of stitches that collectively define a longitudinally extending channel encasing the draw cord. The elastic band is fed through the sewing machine by a set of feed rollers disposed upstream from the sewing machine and a set of draw rollers disposed downstream of the sewing machine. The draw rollers are operated at a higher feed rate than the feed rollers to stretch a segment of the elastic band as it passes through the sewing machine. The draw cord is fed through the sewing machine in side-by-side relationship with the elastic band and is secured to the band while the band is in a stretched condition.

  • Patent number: 5080029
Abstract: This invention relates to decorative ribbons, and to methods and machines for making them. More specifically, the invention relates to fabric ribbons that are edged with wire and trimmed with an overlay of decorative thread.According to the invention, a run of fabric ribbon is simultaneously edged with wire and tightly bound with a binding filament (such as monofilament) and a trim filament (such as decorative thread). This is done in a single operation. The result is a unique ribbon construction, which has many desirable properties. The new ribbons are flexible, but will retain their shape when bent, twisted or tied into a desired configuration. They are elegantly simple in design and provide a novel streamlined finished product with components that are firmly bound together. The ribbons provide an improved edge and trimming where the wire meets the fabric.

  • Patent number: 4903622
Abstract: Apparatus for guiding and braking elastic or nonelastic bands during sewing to pieces of fabric has an elongated flat housing of rectangular cross-sectional outline with a transversely extending channel for a band. The housing is separably affixed to the table of a household sewing machine and contains a reciprocable slide which can alter the effective width of the channel. The slide is installed at one side of the channel, and the housing supports an adjustable fabric guide at the other side of the channel. A plate-like biasing member is installed in the channel at a level above the band, and the biasing member can be moved up or down by a screw having a knurled head so as to select the force with which the underside of the biasing member bears against the upper side of the band.

  • Patent number: 4703705
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for feeding and securing a fabric tape enclosing a wire to a sheet of fabric, such as a mattress pad, along a predetermined circuitous path. The pad is supported in a generally planar configuration and is movable through a plane under the needle of a sewing head so that the needle traverses the circuitous path on the pad. The tape and enclosed wire are supplied to a guide rotatably mounted on the sewing head for guiding the tape and enclosed wire onto the pad towards the needle from locations circumferentially disposed about a vertical axis of the needle. Provision is made for moving the guide about the sewing head as the pad moves in the circuitous path under the needle so that the tape and enclosed wire move towards the needle generally along the circuitous path.
