Thread Chain Patents (Class 112/288)
  • Patent number: 4352333
Abstract: A sewing machine is provided with a needle thread cutting device for severing the free end of the needle thread extending through the eye of the needle at the beginning of a sewing operation to prevent entanglement of the free end with the stitches being formed. A cutter element is mounted for oscillating movement in conjunction with the raising and lowering of the presser foot. The lower end of the cutter element is provided with a transverse leg extending across the upper surface of the presser foot in close proximity thereto rearwardly of the needle. The transverse leg portion is provided with a cutting edge on the side thereof remote from the needle.

  • Patent number: 4348970
Abstract: A portable bag-closing sewing machine is provided with a self-oiling system which includes an oil reservoir connected to the machine and oil-delivery means to direct oil from the reservoir into the inner chambers of the machine where oil is distributed by gravity flow, capillary action and movement of machine components, the oil moving along through the machine components and through a series of channels, troughs, and reservoirs within the housing to distribute oil throughout the machine. During operation, the rotating and reciprocating machine parts fling oil outwardly within the chambers to directly oil machine assemblies and to create a fine mist of oil throughout the chambers so as to further lubricate machine components. Also disclosed is an improved and self-lubricating feed dog assembly and thread chain cutting device.

  • Patent number: 4303030
Abstract: A device for sewing machines having more than one stitch forming needle for grouping together and aligning the threads of stitch chains with the sewing axis which were formed on individual tongues of the machine's needle plate. An integral projection formed on the needle plate in spaced relation to the tongues is provided on each side thereof with camming surfaces one of which is effective in grouping all of the threads together withdrawn from their respective tongues and the other guides the grouped threads to a position for entry into one of the plate's needle throats after which they become aligned with the sewing axis and then cut to a desired length and the cut portion restrained for incorporation into the next seam to be formed.

  • Patent number: 4281607
Abstract: The invention pertains to a cutting apparatus for sewing machines disposed downstream of the machine's sewing zone. The apparatus includes a cutting blade and a protective guard for the blade both of which have independent actuating devices. The actuating devices are effective in moving the guard and blade between one position which provides clearance for the workpieces being advanced along the machine's work surface and another position where they are operatively associated with the workpieces. A timing element is operatively associated with both actuating devices and is effective in causing the protective guard to be moved toward the workpieces prior to movement of the blade.

  • Patent number: 4265191
Abstract: A sewing machine has a movable feed member for feeding articles to a stitch-applying station, and a trimmer for cutting chains of stitches which dangle from articles on the outfeed side of the stitch-applying station. The feed member and trimmer are driven from the same drive shaft. The trimmer drive includes a swinging crank which is connected to a rotary cam by a one-way clutch, one-way clutches which support the rotary cam and permit it to rotate only in the direction it is driven by the crank, and a rocker arm which has one end driven by the cam and another end drivingly connected to the trimmer.

  • Patent number: 4220105
Abstract: A device for orienting a chain of stitches severed from a completed workpiece to a position where the end is taken by a gripping apparatus and the intermediate portion placed in a predetermined location where it cannot be displaced by the next workpiece while incorporating the chain into the initial stitches of the seam being formed thereon.

  • Patent number: 4138957
Abstract: A cutter for severing work pieces chained together and for removing thread in close proximity to the work piece, such as on leading and trailing edges. The cutter of the invention permits close proximity of adjacent work pieces during the process of sewing but is still able to cut and remove free thread without necessitating undue slack as normally required with a shear type cutter (unlike a guillotine type cutter), or similarly can remove trailing thread between the work piece and the sewing machine.

  • Patent number: 4108097
Abstract: A device on a sewing machine for severing thread chains comprises a driven movable cutting knife which has a cutting edge disposed to move in a path in which it is spaced from a stationary counterknife. The driven knife is continuously rotated during the ordinary sewing operation, and when cutting is to be effected, the thread chain is directed so that it is moved over the counterknife to place it in a deflection position in the path of movement of the movable cutting knife and cause the movable cutting knife to move in a path in which it comes into the range of cooperative interengagement with the stationary counterknife.
