The upper roll has at least one of the following on its web-entrance side--with respect to the lower roll--a sump chamber for coating composition formed of a doctor element and its mount and on its other side, an applicator chamber of a nozzle applicator. The lower roll may be adapted to be swung or lowered away from the upper roll and/or the upper roll may be liftable away from the lower roll.

Abstract: An apparatus is provided for pretreating plastic sheets having poor adhesive properties, with a primer treatment. The primer treatment includes a sheet conveyor for conveying plastic sheets in one direction at a constant speed. A flexible, porous friction member is arranged so as to come into contact with adhesive areas of the plastic sheets. A press confronts the friction member and presses the plastic sheet against the friction member. A primer solution is supplied to the friction member where it is transmitted to the plastic sheet.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for applying coating to products such as medicaments are disclosed. The present invention provides a apparatus comprising product holders and plates which interact with vacuum tubes to retain the product being coated in place while inverted and dipped into a tank of coating material. The vacuum tubes may be designed to hold product of nearly any shape or in any orientation. In a preferred embodiment, methods and apparatus for creating a two-color gelatin coating on a tablet are disclosed. In certain embodiments, additional apparatus are provided whereby the vacuum tubes rotate about their longitudinal axes and are placed in contact with a coating applicator, thereby applying a band or stripe of a coating material to a specified section of the product.

Abstract: A coating section for coating a traveling web of material, such as paper, wherein the web to be coated travels along a selected one of two different web paths. There is a lower counter roll and an upper press roll which define a nip between them and the distance apart of the two rolls is adjustable. A respective applicator for coating composition is on each of the first and second sides of the lower roll and on the third side of the upper roll, and the third side is the same side of the coating section as the first side of the lower roll. First web guide rollers guide the web from below, past the counter roll and the first applicator and not through the nip. Second guide rollers guide the web through the nip.

Abstract: An apparatus for coating the flat surface of a substrate with a coating material is disclosed in which only a minimum amount of coating material is required for uniformly coating the entire surface of the substrate in an efficient manner under a variety of coating conditions, even if the substrate surface takes a non-circular configuration. According to one embodiment, the flat surface of the substrate is first coated with a coating material, and the substrate thus coated is then spunned at predetermined number of revolutions per minute. According to another embodiment, the apparatus includes a support table on which the substrate is fixedly mounted. A plurality of shaping members are slidably mounted on the support table for forming with the flat non-circular-shaped surface of the substrate a flat continuously extending circular-shaped surface.

  • Patent number: 4848268
Abstract: Apparatus for applying a liquid coating onto a moving web has one or preferably two rotatable rollers. In the two roller embodiment both rollers lie on the same plane which is at or near the horizontal. The two roller embodiment positions the rollers adjacent each so as to form a press nip between them. The moving web makes contact with one of the rollers, or the single roller along an extended circumferential arc of the roller. Adjacent each roller is a supply apparatus for depositing a liquid on to a portion of the roller jacket not in contact with the web. Wiper rods are associated with each supply apparatus and are biased against the jacket of the roller to make the coating of liquid uniform. Surplus liquid is used to wash the rollers to remove web fibers and glue and pigment particulate to avoid contamination thereby of the supply apparatus and wiper rods. The surplus liquid and fibers and particulate are collected in sumps.
