The filamentous article or substrate is passed through an improvement station containing a plurality of coating-wetted rolls that contact and re-contact the wet coating at different positions along the length of the filamentous article or rotating substrate, wherein the periods of the rolls improve the uniformity of the coating. For coatings applied to a rotating substrate, the uniform wet coating is transferred to the filamentous article. The final coating can be very thin, very uniform and completely or substantially void-free. The coating improvement can be quickly and easily obtained using low cost equipment.

Alternatively, a transversely oriented string may be used to catch a drop and then place the drop onto the suture. The tipping agent absorbed into the tipped portion can then be cured and cut to provide a tipped suture. The tipping process and apparatus can be used in conjunction with a needle-suture assembly process. The process advantageously controls application of a droplet of tipping agent to minimize the amount of tipping agent used, thereby providing an aesthetic needle-suture attachment. Apparatus are disclosed for performing the process.

    Abstract: Apparatus and process are described for impregnating a fibrous substrate with a thermosettable resin. The process involves the use of resin application means comprising a moving surface on which is positioned a liquid-form thermosettable resin in essentially uncured state, passing a fibrous web in countercurrent contact with the thermosettable resin so as to transfer the thermosettable resin into the fibrous web, and passing the resin-containing fibrous web to a heating zone to partially cure the resin and form a prepreg. The process is particularly suited for application of a solventless resin formulation to a glass web in the preparation of a prepreg for an electrical laminate.

A predetermined amount of liquid is thus applied at intermittent or spaced locations along the length of the yarn. The method and apparatus is particularly suitable for providing dye at spaced locations along a continuous length of floss, thereby demarcating lengths suitable for individual use. Various aspects are also applicable to a variety of yarn coating and/or dyeing applications.

    Abstract: A length of conductive wire is supported between a first reel and a second reel. The first reel is driven to move the wire through the device in a stepped fashion. Each time the wire stops a reciprocating plunger brings a material to be evaporated into contact with the wire. An electric current is passed through the length of wire in the area where the material contacts the wire. The wire is heated by the electric current to melt the material onto the wire to form a bead of material thereon. The wire is advanced to repeat the bead forming process. The wire with the beads formed thereon is wound onto the first reel for later use in an evaporator process. An infrared sensor monitors the heating process to determine if the material is melted at the desired temperature. A sensor is also provided to stop the device if the wire breaks. The advancing of the wire, the operation and refilling of the plunger and the heating of the wire are all performed automatically.

It is critical that the diameter of the cylindrical applicator be only slightly less than the diameter of the cylindrical opening running through the support frame, thus restricting the amount of liquid coating that can be applied to the moving fiber. By placing the tubular connecting piece directly adjacent to the cylindrical applicator, no pool of coating is created.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for sizing warp yarn utilized in preparing a loom beam for weaving are disclosed. A porous application roll (A) is utilized for applying a sizing material onto a sheet of warp yarns (12) passing between a pressure roll (30) and the application roll. A porous flow control membrane (D) having a pore size less than that of the distribution layer occupies a boundary region for metering the sizing material. When the passage of warp yarns is discontinued, the application roll (A) is moved to an idle position by an actuator (38). In the idle position, liquid (72) is made to contact the application surface to maintain it in a moist condition.
