Plural Pools Patents (Class 118/412)
  • Patent number: 4830887
Abstract: Method and apparatus for applying one or a plurality of superimposed layers of a photographic coating composition by the curtain coating method onto a moving support. The spacing between the edge guides, used to maintain the width of a curtain throughout its free fall from the coating hopper to the impingement line on the support, is arranged to coat less than the width of the support so as to provide an uncoated margin on the support. The curtain fluids are extracted from the edge region of the falling curtain by connecting a suction device to the edge guides near the point of impingement of the falling curtain, thus substantially reducing the thickness of the curtain at its edge region and thereby reducing the thickness of the coated edges.

Abstract: Hg.sub.1-x Cd.sub.x Te is an important semiconductor for use in photovoltaic and photoconductive infrared photon detectors. Hg.sub.1-x Cd.sub.x Te can be grown by liquid phase epitaxy at atmospheric pressure from a Te-rich solution in which case the Hg vapor pressure is below 0.1 atm at 500.degree. C. This low vapor pressure makes possible the use of open-tube, slider growth techniques. The present invention describes a covered graphite slider system which provides an additional source of Hg, minimizes loss of Hg from the source wafer and virtually prevents loss of Hg from the (Hg.sub.1-x Cd.sub.x).sub.1-y Te.sub.y growth solution.

Abstract: An improved apparatus for the continuous treatment of webs of materials such as textile materials with a foamed treatment medium. The apparatus includes a rotating cylinder, the length of which is at least equal to the width of material being treated and the circumference of which engages the web over a portion of the cylinder. The web is looped over the cylinder in a looping region and the apparatus further includes a foam feeding device which transfers foam to the web in a transfer region at the circumference of the cylinder. The improvement of the invention comprises a foam feeding means which includes a foam chamber disposed adjacent the cylinder at the looping region, the looping region being located at a side of the cylinder which descends during rotation of the cylinder. The foam chamber opens adjacent the web at the looping region and a wiper is disposed at the lower end of the foam chamber parallel to the longitudinal axis of the cylinder.

  • Patent number: 4363289
Abstract: Flat printing screens can be coated on one or both sides by the method and apparatus. A liquid is applied to a screen by one or two squeegees secured to carriages moved up and down on rubber sprocket belts driven by a motor. The speed of application can be adjusted according to the desired thickness of the coating and the viscosity of the liquid. The squeegees are mutually offset somewhat in height to reliably prevent the liquid from running out when the squeegees are not in motion. Application takes place regularly and reproducibly even in the case of a thick coating. The drive by means of rubber sprocket belts and a counterweight ensure vibration-free movement of the squeegees along the screen.

  • Patent number: 4327130
Abstract: Method and apparatus for coating both sides of a moving web and for independently controlling the coatings' width, thickness and uniformity of thickness along the length of the web. A moving web is supported on a backing surface. Two stationary and pliant smoothing films are positioned one adjacent each surface of the web, including the web surface which is supported by the backing surface. A coating liquid is metered to each side of the web at the confluence of the web and the two smoothing films, the respective metering rates being selected to produce a desired respective coating width. A pliant pressure generating means, in the form of a membrane holds a length of one smoothing film against the moving web with a static force whose magnitude is selected in accordance with a desired coating thickness. The relative position of the backing surface and the pressure generating means determines the length of coincidence of the moving web, coating liquid, stationary smoothing films and pressure generating means.

Abstract: A centrifuge rotor is described which facilitates the preparation of cell dispersions on microscope slides. The rotor is bowl-like in configuration and defines plural peripheral regions adapted to receive the slides and a removable sample chamber associated with each slide. Each chamber has an outlet adpated to contact its slide. A sample, containing blood cells, for example, may be placed in a chamber and the cells centrifugally sedimented against the slide associated therewith. Excess or unwanted fluid is removed from the chamber by applying a vacuum through a vacuum line and hollow drive shaft. Leaf springs maintain each chamber in position and the vacuum line in fluid contact with the chamber. The vacuum line conecting each chamber cooperates with its leaf spring such that if a chamber is missing, the leaf spring closes the vacuum line.
