Patent number: 5843529Abstract: A pre-metering rod is located between a coating applicator and an air knife, and replaces the smoothing roll in some existing air knife applications. The pre-metering rod consists of a small diameter rod of about one and one-half inches in diameter that rotates at 10-500 rpm against the direction of the coating layer on the web. The web is wrapped around a portion of the circumference amounting to about twenty-five degrees of the rod's surface as it travels over the rod. The rod is supported in a rod holder supported on a support beam. Actuators move the support beam away from the web for threading and maintenance, and towards the web to engage the rod with the web. The combination of the rod diameter, the amount of wrap on the rod, and the speed of the rod rotation determine the amount of pre-metering of the coating, which determines the thickness of the coating layer on the web that is presented to the air knife section. As a result, the thickness of the coating layer can be decreased.Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 1997Date of Patent: December 1, 1998Assignee: Beloit Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Robert E. Peiffer

Patent number: 5820676Abstract: An apparatus for applying precise, uniform, coatings to elongated shafts, such as golf club shafts. Shafts are held by a gripper in a downwardly hanging array. A paint head assembly is moved upwardly over each shaft in sequence to apply a paint coating to a selected portion of the shaft length. The paint head assembly includes a flexible container including a central hole, a vertically moveable edge frame and an expander for changing the area of the hole. Raising the frame forms the container into a bowl like configuration, so that paint will contact a shaft extending through, and in contact with, the hole. The assembly is moved up along the shaft to apply a layer of paint, with the hole area varied to accommodate shaft taper, steps, etc. When the desired shaft length has been painted, the frame is lowered, changing the container to a trough-like configuration with pint away from the hole region. The expander widens the hole out of contact with the shaft and the assembly is lowered to below the shaft end.Type: GrantFiled: September 11, 1995Date of Patent: October 13, 1998Inventor: Albrecht B. Bauerle

Patent number: 5820675Abstract: An application unit for directly or indirectly applying a fluid or pasty medium to a continuous material web, particularly one made of paper or cardboard, includes a beam that extends across the entire length of the application unit, and a distribution pipe arranged within beam. The pipe is connected via through-flow openings to a feed duct merging into a metering gap forming a free-jet nozzle. The pipe may alternatively be coupled to an application chamber. The through-flow openings are arranged in an upper portion of the distribution pipe and at least one discharge opening for fluid or pasty medium is provided at any one or more other portions of the distribution pipe.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 1996Date of Patent: October 13, 1998Assignee: Voith Sulzer Papiermaschinen GmbHInventor: Zygmunt Madrzak

Patent number: 5795393Abstract: A coating edge limiter for a coating arrangement with a short dwell time. Color is fed under pressure into a coating chamber formed by a backing roll around which a paper web is guided, a barrier wall, a doctor blade element and sealing blocks located at both ends of the coater. A formatting plate almost completely covers an application zone between the doctor blade element and the barrier wall so that an edge region of the web is sharply delineated and kept completely free of color. In each of the sealing blocks water is supplied via channels to depressions thereby forming a pressure cushion. This pressure cushion prevents the pressurized color in the coating chamber from flowing out laterally and ensures that the formatting plate is pressed flatly against the web. The coating edge limiter thereby makes it possible to establish very precisely the width of the web to be produced.Type: GrantFiled: January 13, 1997Date of Patent: August 18, 1998Assignee: Stora Feldmuhle AGInventor: Wolfgang Isfort

Patent number: 5795394Abstract: A sensor and a method for determining the basis weight of a coating material containing CaCO.sub.3 on a substrate is described. The determined basis weight is insensitive to changes in the amount of substrate material underlying the coating. Signals from the sensor may be used in the control of a coating mechanism to provide a coating having a uniform basis weight.Type: GrantFiled: June 2, 1997Date of Patent: August 18, 1998Assignee: Honeywell-MeasurexInventors: Edward Belotserkovsky, John A. Patent number: 5792260Abstract: The invention concerns a method for two-sided coating of a printing-paper web with a coating paste or equivalent. In the method, the paper web is passed through the coating part of the paper machine, in which the first side of the web is coated in the first coating station of said coating part, and the coating-agent layer produced on the face of the web is dried at least partly by means of a first drying unit. The second side of the web is coated in the second coating station of the coating part, and the second coating-agent layer produced on the face of the web is dried at least partly by means of a second drying unit.Type: GrantFiled: March 19, 1996Date of Patent: August 11, 1998Assignee: Valmet CorporationInventors: Rauno Rantanen, Pekka Haapanen

Patent number: 5776252Abstract: An assembly, for preventing striping in an applicator used for coating a paper or paperboard web, comprising a doctor blade suitable for metering and smoothing a coat to be applied, a cross-machine elongated application chamber adapted immediately in front of the doctor blade, one of the sides of the chamber being formed by the web being coated. A flexible leading blade forming a front sealing edge of the chamber has a perforated stem with openings to allow coating mix from the application chamber to travel in front of the leading blade. A homogenizing chamber is formed in front of the openings in the leading blade using a dam lip or similar flow barrier. The flow exiting the openings of the leading blade is homogenized in the homogenizing chamber as the flow impinges against the flow barrier.Type: GrantFiled: September 16, 1996Date of Patent: July 7, 1998Assignee: Valmet CorporationInventor: Jukka Koskinen
