Differences of thickness or surface height of the strip article are therefore accommodated unduly varying the coating thickness.

Discharge ports 47a, 49a of the supply flow paths 47, 49 are open to the slit-like spacing 29. The portion of the spacing 29 downstream of the discharge ports 47a, 49a in the direction of movement of the electrode sheet 23 has a thickness equivalent to the thickness of the electrode sheet 23 plus the thickness of the electrode piling agent coated on the two sides of the electrode sheet 23. The portion of the spacing 29 upstream of the discharge ports 47a, 49a has a thickness substantially equal to the thickness of the electrode sheet 23.

The web is wrapped around a portion of the circumference amounting to about twenty-five degrees of the rod's surface as it travels over the rod. The rod is supported in a rod holder supported on a support beam. Actuators move the support beam away from the web for threading and maintenance, and towards the web to engage the rod with the web. The combination of the rod diameter, the amount of wrap on the rod, and the speed of the rod rotation determine the amount of pre-metering of the coating, which determines the thickness of the coating layer on the web that is presented to the air knife section. As a result, the thickness of the coating layer can be decreased.

Raising the frame forms the container into a bowl like configuration, so that paint will contact a shaft extending through, and in contact with, the hole. The assembly is moved up along the shaft to apply a layer of paint, with the hole area varied to accommodate shaft taper, steps, etc. When the desired shaft length has been painted, the frame is lowered, changing the container to a trough-like configuration with pint away from the hole region. The expander widens the hole out of contact with the shaft and the assembly is lowered to below the shaft end.
