  • Patent number: 6113960
Abstract: A method for coating food pieces with powder material. The apparatus includes a drum having a pair of opposing side openings, and engaging members mounted on a cylindrical inner surface thereof. Powder material is sifted by the engaging members as the drum is rotated. An inlet member extends through one of the openings and deposits food pieces into the drum such that one food piece is deposited onto the powder material located between each adjacent pair of engaging members at a bottom portion of the drum. Rotation of the drum causes the food piece to roll on the powder material, thereby completely coating the food piece, and causes the engaging members to lift the coated food pieces to an upper portion of the drum until the coated food pieces roll or slide off of the engaging members. An outlet member is positioned to receive the coated food pieces as they roll or slide from the engaging members.

Abstract: A drum for holding, moving and treating a particulate material is rotatable about its axis and has a metallic wall enclosing the axis and provided with perforation holes. A wire fabric has wires sintered to one another, rests essentially with its entire outer surface against the inner surface of the wall, is sintered essentially over its entire outer surface to the wall and separates the perforation holes thereof from the free interior space of the drum. Since the wire fabric rests essentially with its entire outer surface against the wall, no particulate material can enter between the wall and the wire fabric. The wire fabric is durable and can be cleaned rapidly and readily together with the rest of the drum.

  • Patent number: 5846324
Abstract: An apparatus and process for coating food products with seasoning, powder or other dry or granulated material while the food products are rotated in a drum uses a trough which extends into the drum from outside of the drum. The trough provides a plurality of V-shaped channels having intermittently arranged lengthwise slots along low points of the channels for creating curtains of material falling through the slots onto the food products. The trough is vibrated for inducing flow along its length as well as for preventing clogging of material flowing through the slots. Alternately the material can spill over a tapered wall of the trough rather than through slots. A vibrating inlet feeder which provides a screening surface is located upstream of the trough for screening the material before discharge into the trough and eventual discharge into the drum. A controlled screw feeder can be used to limit and regulate flow of material into the inlet feeder.

Perforations in the sidewall of the drum allow a flow of air through the drum and curtain of material so as to dry the coating solution on the material substantially instantaneously as the material is coated with solution in the drum. The drum is maintained at a negative pressure during the coating process.

  • Patent number: 4909181
Abstract: A fluid distribution bar, such as for applying a liquid or other fluent medium to a tumbling bed of material to be coated, has concentrically mounted inner and outer tubes in the described embodiment. The inner tube has a plurality of outlets along a length of the tube which are alignable with corresponding openings formed in the outer tube by relative movement of the tubes. A plurality of slidable seals each corresponding to an inner tube outlet are mounted in the interior of the outer tube to overlie and seal the inner tube outlets in a first position, with the relative movement of the tubes unsealing the outlets in a second position for fluid distribution. The described embodiment uses seals comprising an elongated flexible resilient sealing strip mounted at each end in apertures formed in the outer tube such that the flexible strips are elastically deformed to slidably bear against the exterior surface of the inner tube for a good sealing engagement.

Abstract: An arrangement for processing ligno-cellulose containing particles for the manufacture of wood-product plates. These have layers of oriented chips, and a chipper comminutes raw material. The fine material and dust are separated by a sifting device, and the sifted chips are provided with binder material by a gluing device. The chipper produces more chips of as great a length as possible than are required for forming of at least one cover layer of a mat. Behind the chipper, there are provided a wet-chip bunker and a dryer. The sifter separates the chips, obtained after removal of the fine material and the dust, into two fractions. The chip composition of one of these fractions, during the processing time, constantly contains chips which are as long as possible and which are more than that required for forming the mat layer. The other fraction has shorter chips obtained during chipping, and both fractions are present each in at least one bunker.
