  • Patent number: 6060111
Abstract: In a melt deposition painting station, a solid body of paint is fed onto an endless belt conveyor, incorporating a substantially planar belt flight, a head pulley, and turn round means adjacent to the contact point of the paint block and the moving steel strip and consisting of a stationary guide and an idler pulley. The turn round means is so constructed that the direction of the belt movement after the turn is at least parallel to that of the continuously moving strip and preferably at an angle away from it. The head pulley is preferably coated with a high friction material such as natural rubber. The planar belt flight is adapted to support one or more blocks of substantially solvent-free paint composition, which becomes bonded to the pliable, durable heat-resistant material of the belt. The belt causes continuous movement of the paint block towards one end of the flight to affect melting of some portion of a solid body of paint composition onto a moving strip.

  • Patent number: 5407697
Abstract: A method of continuously painting one side of a moving substrate metal strip (1) utilizing a thermosetting polymer based paint composition comprises pre-heating the strip in a pre-heat furnace (2) to a pre-heat temperature above the glass transition temperature of the paint composition, driving a solid block (8) of the paint composition into collision with the strip at a predetermined block speed to cause liquid paint to be melted from the block and applied to the strip at a precisely controlled deposition rate. The deposit, which for thin paint coats is discontinuous, is then spread over the surface of the strip by a pressure roll (14) and emerges therefrom as a smooth coat of wet paint. A bead of liquid paint (17) builds up on the strip on the up stream side of the pressure roll and the block speed may be adjusted in response to the bead size. The emergent strip then travels through a paint curing furnace (5) and a bath (6) to complete the process.

  • Patent number: 4627380
Abstract: A marking apparatus for coloring a lateral edge of a sheet moving along its longitudinal axis includes a marking head including a body and a tubular shaft mounted on the body for rotation about an axis of said shaft. A roller is fixedly mounted on the tubular shaft for rotation therewith. An elongated coloring element of a solid material is received in the tubular shaft for rotation therewith and has one end extending outwardly of one end of the tubular shaft a predetermined distance. An actuator is operable to move the marking head in a plane perpendicular to the plane of the sheet parallel to a plane in which the lateral edge of the sheet lies so as to bring an end face of the one end of the coloring element into contact with the lateral edge of the sheet to apply a marking thereto. The axis of the tubular shaft is disposed transversely of a path of travel of the sheet and inclined with respect to the plane of the sheet.

  • Patent number: 4622914
Abstract: Apparatus is disclosed for treating a movable surface with material which has been removed from an erodable bar of such material. A movable applicator is adapted to brush against the bar and to transfer eroded material to the movable surface. The bar is cylindrical and mounted for rotation about its longitudinal axis to present a continuously changing portion of its periphery to the applicator. By causing the bar to rotate, the peripheries of the applicator and the bar move at relative speeds less than that which would cause objectionable dusting to occur. The bar is mounted for movement generally toward the rotatable applicator to maintain contact therebetween as the bar wears. The pressure between the bar and the applicator is maintained partially by gravitational force and partially by magnetic force.
