Container-related Coater Patents (Class 118/DIG3)
  • Patent number: 6051069
Abstract: Apparatus for coating the bottom rim surface of a container using a vacuum conveyor for holding and transporting a plurality of empty containers with the bottom rim surfaces exposed so that the bottom rim surfaces may be passed over a coating applicator roll and through a curing oven to provide the bottom rim surfaces with a cured coating and wherein the vacuum conveyor is wide enough so that a plurality of the bottom rim surfaces may be coated at the same time and then passed through the curing oven. Also, the durometer of the application roll can be varied so as to apply a coating of uniform thickness or a coating of varying thicknesses.

  • Patent number: 6012503
Abstract: An adjustable gluing apparatus for dispensing glue onto articles, such as flaps of cartons on a packaging machine. A glue dispensing head attached to a clamping block is moved along a bar by a rack and pinion gear arrangement. The bar has rack teeth, and the pinion gear and attached pinion shaft are supported by the clamping block, which has an aperture receiving the bar. Turning an adjustment knob connected to the pinion shaft adjusts the position of the clamping block relative to the bar. Rotation of the pinion shaft is selectively allowed or prevented by a locking knob threadably engaged with the pinion shaft. The clamping block is further secured to the bar by a screw in the clamping block which contacts the back side of the bar to provide teeth-engagement adjustment for the rack and pinion gear teeth. The screw has an adjusting knob and a locking knob similar to that on the pinion shaft.

  • Patent number: 5997643
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are disclosed for spraying powder into the interior of welded hollow can bodies from a spray gun mounted to the welding arm of a can forming machine. The spray gun can either apply a stripe of highly charged powder on the welded seam areas of hollow can bodies, or can simultaneously apply a coating of powder having a first thickness on the longitudinally welded seam areas and a second thickness less than the first thickness on the remainder of the interior surface. Air is vented off from the powder flow being transported through the welding arm so that the powder to air ratio is increased. Air is introduced at the downstream end of the welding arm to provide a suction force to help draw the powder flow through the welding arm and to increase the velocity of the powder flow for better tribo charging of the powder in the gun and to improve spray pattern stability.

  • Patent number: 5456754
Abstract: Single ply paperboard containers are wax-coated by directing a relatively narrow spray band of atomized wax towards the interior surfaces of the containers being treated. The spray band is volumetrically asymmetrical and is oriented relative to the interior surfaces of the container such that its volumetric asymmetry is directed towards the bottom circumferential seam between the tubular side wall and bottom wall of the containers. In this manner, a minimal (but fluid-impervious effective) nonsaturating amount of wax will be applied to the interior surfaces of the container so as to preserve the vivid appearance of color graphics and/or indicia that may be printed on the exterior surface of the container. At the same time, the volumetric asymmetry and orientation of the spray band ensures that a maximum amount of wax will be applied at or near the circumferential bottom seam so that a fluid-impervious fillet seal may be established thereat.

  • Patent number: 5387541
Abstract: The invention provides a method of producing silicon-on-porous-silicon material comprising the steps of (i) manufacturing a porous silicon layer on a suitable silicon wafer, such that the silicon wafer has a porous silicon surface and a non-porous silicon surface, (ii) applying an implanted ion dose to at least a portion of the porous silicon surface such that the dose is sufficient to cause amorphization of porous silicon. The material produced by the method of the invention can then be used for production of silicon-on-insulator material by oxidation of remaining porous silicon and recrystallization of amorphised silicon. Typically such material can be used for manufacture of e.g. SOI C-MOS devices and bipolar transistors. Alternatively, the method of the invention can be used for the manufacture of e.g. pyroelectric devices.

The applicator assembly is especially adapted to contact the top curl of paperboard containers so that an amount of the molten coating material which saturates the porous applicator may be transferred to the top curl and thereby increase the top curl's circumferential rigidity upon solidification. The applicator assembly is preferably positioned laterally parallel of a linear treatment path along which the containers are conveyed in an inverted manner. Each container is rotated during conveyance along the linear treatment path such that the entire circumference of the top curl is brought into contact with the elongate porous applicator saturated with molten coating material.

The thixotropic lacquer is applied preferably in plural closely adjacent streams which unite after the lacquer engages the container surface. Beneficial results are obtained by adjusting the temperature of the container and/or lacquer, and further by heating the applied band of lacquer.
