Abstract: A pet toy (20) made up of a wand (26) and a play object (22) flexibly coupled to an end of the wand (26) is taught. The wand (26) has a wand shaft (50) and a wand head (52) rigidly affixed to the end of the wand shaft (50). The wand shaft (50) has a predetermined shaft diameter (54). The wand head (52) has a base width (58) greater than the shaft diameter (54). A flexible coupling (24) flexibly couples the play object (22) to the wand (26). The flexible coupling (24) has a coupling pocket (74) encompassing the wand head (52). The coupling pocket (74) is configured so that the wand head (52) has limited free movement therein. Motion of the wand (26) by a human therefore imparts a complex motion to the play object (22). This complex motion emulates the motion of prey and stimulates the instinct of the pet.

  • Patent number: 6971332
Abstract: Birdcage attachments are mountable to a birdcage and present a bird with a variety of interesting and challenging activities. The toy attachments encourage birds to learn by experimenting. As a bird manipulates some parts of the toy attachments, the bird will discover that the parts may be put into different positions and remain there until deciding to move them again. In most cases, the parts will not automatically return to their original state or position if the bird stops playing, challenging a bird even more to return the toy to its original state.

  • Patent number: 6883465
Abstract: A stringed cat toy to encourage playful activity and exercise in cats and healthy interaction between cat owners and their pets. The cat toy comprises an elongated music string with a small handle securely connected at one end and an object which is attractive to cats secured at the opposite end. The preferred cat toy string is selected from a group of composite strings used for instruments such as the cello, bass or violin, which are of low tensile strength and are designed for low-frequency vibration on the order of about 100 Hertz or less. The dynamic properties of the composite string facilitate interesting movements of the attractor, preferably a horse hair tassel, when the handle is rotated. The motion of the attractor appears to be a life-like and erratic movement that simulates prey and stimulates natural predatory instincts within the cat to encourage the animal to leap at the object. Such playful activity both exercises the cat and promotes beneficial interaction between cat and owner.

  • Publication number: 20040011299
Abstract: A solo-interactive animal toy invention comprised of multiple-aspected instinctual attractants. An openwork mobile structure comprised of freely moving rods and plural toys which may be suspended at a level to which an animal ascends for accessible play. Intentional or happenstance action on any part activates transmission of motion through individual parts and the three-dimensional whole, enacting various complex and simple movement styles and formations attractive to a cat. Movements of individual toy-attractants occur simultaneously with overall movement of extended aerial form. When activated, different styles of movement alternate with self-perpetuating rotations. Alternating overlapping pathways among attractants/toys provide for reflex and choice by the cat as to which prey to pursue and when. This cat or other animal toy provides for enduring interest and play. It provides physical exercise and use of instinctual problem solving.

Abstract: An animal amusement device includes a base having an upwardly opening recess in which a corrugated scratch pad is installed. A pole extends upwardly from the base through the scratch pad and journals at its upper end a rotatable arm. The arm suspends an object by a flexible tether cord radially outward of the pole and above the level of the upper surface of the scratch pad. In another embodiment, the arm is mounted to a drive shaft of a motor secured in the pole whereby the object may be driven in a circular path about the pole by the motor.

  • Patent number: 5713306
Abstract: An accessory for domestic cats that provides scratching, climbing, resting, playing, sleeping and observation facilities for the house kept cat that is designed and engineered as a "knockdown" assembly that can easily and readily be erected or disassembled. The main assembly is comprised of several sections and sizes of cylindrical shapes that are attached in-line end to end via internal fasteners that are threaded to prevent accidental separation. Once the sections are fully assembled a drop-in pressure maintaining device that is preassembled is installed at the top end together with a mobile multiple toy holder. The largest diameter assembly serves as the "house" and the roof serves multi-purpose, one, as an observation deck, the other, as an elevated play deck from where the cat can reach and play with toys attached to the mobile multiple toy holder. The bottom of the "house" serves as a mounting for the anchor that suspends other toys between the "house" and the floor.
