Patent number: 7387721Abstract: Hot water pipes, in areas with hard water, tend to fill with scale until they no longer pass enough water. De-scaling water pipes with acid is dangerous, expensive and damages the pipes. Ion exchange and reverse osmosis water softeners eliminate scale buildup in pipes, but are expensive. This invention is a means of keeping the scale precipitate, created when water is heated, inside the water heater by passing the hot water through a removal medium where the scale sticks to the surface. The removal medium can be placed inside the water heater or in a separate tank connected to the water heater; both configurations remove the precipitate from hot water; both save hot water pipes from scale accumulation.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 2005Date of Patent: June 17, 2008Inventor: Steven Clay Moore

Patent number: 7360507Abstract: An energy saving apparatus is described. The energy saving apparatus is attached to a standard gas-powered water heater. All gas-powered water heaters typically have an air vent which vents hot air from the water heater. The apparatus takes advantage of this fact by routing a cold water inlet line into a heating coil wrapped around the air vent, with the heating coil eventually being connected to an outlet water line that then enters the hot water heater. The heating coil is merely a water line located in between the cold water inlet line and the outlet water line that is wrapped around the air vent many times. The heat from the air vent will transfer some of its heat to the water circulating within the heating coil, causing the hot water heater to utilize this otherwise wasted energy and subsequently causing the hot water heater to need less energy to heat the water within the hot water heater.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 2005Date of Patent: April 22, 2008Inventor: Mearl G. Patent number: 6736535Abstract: The act of heating water within a contained vessel that is common to most buildings, whether residential or commercial or located in recreational vehicles, mobile homes, aircraft, ships or marine pleasure craft, causes calcium carbonate to precipitate out and settle to the bottom of a heating or fluid containing vessel. The use of ultrasonic transmission within the vessel will agitate the water held within, preventing the normally stagnant hot water from producing calcium carbonate. Other benefits are the cleaning properties of ultrasonic transmission. Thus the internal parts of hot water heaters will enjoy a longer life. This benefit of agitation will also be found when applied to vessels that contain fluids that share similar problems as hot water heaters.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 2002Date of Patent: May 18, 2004Inventors: Richard W. Patent number: 6588377Abstract: A process and apparatus are provided for conserving water and heat energy in a hot water supply system. A holding tank is provided near the Point Of Use to capture unwanted cooled water. An integrated displacement actuator allows this volume to be recirculated back into the hot water supply line after use. The actuator consists of a flexible bladder or rolling diaphragm that divides the holding tank into two compartments; one for non-compressible supply water, and the second for a compressible phase change fluid. At ambient temperature, the phase change fluid condenses to a liquid phase at a relatively low pressure, allowing diverted water to flow into the tank from the hot water supply system. When the phase change fluid is warmed by the adjacent hot water, it changes to a gaseous phase, pressurizing the holding tank and allowing re-injection of the cool water into the hot water supply system. A control system is provided direct water flow based on time, temperature and pressure.Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 2002Date of Patent: July 8, 2003Inventors: Kevin J. Leary, Douglas F. Fuller

Patent number: 6532906Abstract: A water heater includes a storage tank communicating with a cold water supply pipe and a hot water supply pipe for the respective supply of cold water to, and removal of hot water from, the tank. The water heater also includes an insulated heat recovery module communicating between the cold water supply pipe and the tank. The heat recovery module defines a cavity, and the cold water supply pipe communicates with a lower portion of the cavity. The heat recovery module has a smaller surface area-to-volume ratio than the cold water supply pipe. When water in the tank is heated, some water is thermally displaced from the tank and into the cavity. Consequently, water is displaced out of the lower portion of the cavity and into the cold water supply pipe. Therefore, only the coldest water is displaced out of the cavity, and thermal energy loss is reduced.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 2002Date of Patent: March 18, 2003Assignee: AOS Holding CompanyInventors: Ray O. Patent number: 6516754Abstract: A heating system for heating liquids, stored in a tank at low ambient temperature, has a heating chamber with an inlet and an outlet for convectively flowing liquid past a flameless heater. Cold liquid is drawn through an inlet line, from the tank near its base and into a heating chamber, absorbs radiant energy from the heater as it travels therethrough. Heated liquid is circulated into the tank through an upper outlet from the heating chamber and back into the tank. Preferably, the heated liquid reenters the tank through a floating discharge flexibly connected to the upper outlet so as to remain dynamically in contact with the liquid at all times, thus avoiding airlocks which would interrupt the convective flow of liquid through the heating system.Type: GrantFiled: February 20, 2001Date of Patent: February 11, 2003Inventor: Thomas Chadwick
