  • Patent number: 7770543
Abstract: A boiler control method and system. A BFI (bed fuel inventory) value associated with a boiler can be estimated by detecting data from the boiler utilizing an inferential sensor. The bed fuel inventory value can then be stabilized at a particular value utilizing a feedback controller electrically connected to the inferential sensor, in order to optimize the bed fuel inventory value for varying operating conditions of the boiler, thereby permitting a thermal power associated with the boiler to be increased or decreased faster by respectively increasing or decreasing a primary air supply rate associated with the boiler.

  • Publication number: 20100116227
Abstract: A control for a water heater is provided that comprises a pressure switch for sensing a predetermined level of airflow sufficient for maintaining proper burner operation, and a temperature sensing means for sensing the temperature of the water in the tank. The control further comprises a processor for controlling the operation of the burner to maintain the water temperature above a predetermined value. When the processor receives a signal from the pressure switch or temperature switch indicating a malfunction, the processor shuts down the burner and subsequently attempts to restart the burner. The processor will lock-out further burner operation after a predetermined number of consecutive shut downs occurs, and will communicate any malfunction information to a remote display device.

  • Patent number: 7007636
Abstract: A direct-fired, propane powered steam generator is provided with a carburetor, which receives vaporized propane from a converter arrangement which converts liquid propane to vapor, receives pressurized air and feeds a mixture of vaporized propane and air into the combustion chamber of the steam generator. The amount of air delivered to the carburetor is variable, with the amount of vaporized propane entering the carburetor being determined by the position of a metering valve which varies in accordance with the amount of air passing through the carburetor. The converter arrangement receives liquid propane and is coupled to process water heated in the water jackets of the combustion chamber and adjacent structure, the converter arrangement being designed so that heat from the water is transferred for effecting vaporization of the liquid propane.

  • Patent number: 6918356
Abstract: A method for controlling a steam boiler or oil heater for maximum fuel efficiency by systematically finding the most fuel-efficient combination of input control values. A characteristic multi-dimensional look-up table is created by temporarily operating the process at all the possible functional combined settings of a plurality of input operators and recording for each combination of settings the resulting output values of a plurality of process parameters, for example, steam flow, steam pressure, and exhaust composition. Input combinations resulting in either non-functional process or unacceptable output values are eliminated. Steam flow rate is the primary output control parameter. A selected value of steam flow rate is the primary control setpoint for the process. If several combinations of input values can cause the process to meet the primary control setpoint, the combination using the minimum fuel flow is selected as optimal.

  • Patent number: 6904873
Abstract: A fuel-fired boiler having a supply fan for providing essentially all of its combustion air requirements and has a non-aspirating type burner section to an inlet portion of which pressure regulator apparatus is coupled, the pressure regulator apparatus having a predetermined pressure regulation setting. Fuel delivery apparatus is coupled to the inlet of the pressure regulator apparatus and is operative to deliver thereto, from sources thereof, a selectively variable one of (1) a first fuel at a pressure greater than the pressure regulation setting, and (2) a second fuel at a pressure less than the pressure regulation setting, the second fuel having a Wobbe index greater than that of the first fuel. The design of the fuel delivery apparatus permits the burner section firing rate to remain essentially constant, without modifying the burner section, regardless of which of the two fuels is being utilized.

  • Patent number: 6135063
Abstract: A direct-fired steam generator utilizes dual regulators for delivering combustible gas to a burner chamber. A first regulator is a constant pressure gas regulator. A second regulator is a variable pressure gas regulator. The variable pressure gas regulator utilizes a pressure feedback which is representative of the pressure in the burner chamber. One or more air blowers can be utilized to supply air (oxygen) to the burner chamber.

  • Patent number: 6095098
Abstract: A steam generation device comprising two cylinders, an inner and an outer cylinder, the inner cylinder forming a combustion chamber into which streams of air, water and fuel are released under computer control. Water is introduced under pressure into the plenum formed by the inner and outer cylinder and exits into the combustion chamber top holes drilled at an angle into the inner cylinder. Using a model of the combustion process and the flame's gas envelope pressure, the computer maintains combustion and steam production without extinguishing the flame, in response to demands for differing quantities of steam volume, temperature and pressure.

  • Patent number: 5775582
Abstract: A method and apparatus for improving heating system efficiency. An electronic circuit senses a firing signal from a boiler energy value sensor such as a thermostat or pressuretrol. The circuit prevents the boiler energy value sensor from firing the burner, while the circuit senses an energy value of the outflow line at the boiler. The circuit monitors the outflow energy value and records the outflow energy value at a first time of the firing signal. The circuit then continually monitors the outflow energy until it detects an energy drop from the initial outflow energy value. The circuit responds to the energy drop by firing the burner. The invention self adaptively responds to present thermal load, reduces the number of on-off cycles, increases each burner run time while reducing total run time, improves fuel consumption, and reduces air pollution.

  • Patent number: 5355840
Abstract: The steam generator according to the invention consists of a main vessel 1 equipped with heating devices 12 controlled by control devices 13. The water level in the steam generator is kept at an average level 5 by control devices 13 which control a water inlet solenoid valve 10. Measurement of the average water level 5 is achieved by a pressure switch 20 that is exposed to the pressure inside a measuring vessel 18 that communicates with the main vessel 1 via a lower measuring opening 22. Balancing pipework 34 links the pressure switch 20 to the pressure of the steam produced in the steam generator. Pressure switch 20 generates measuring signals that are sent via conductors 17 to control devices 13 in order to actuate solenoid valve 10.

  • Patent number: 4593654
Abstract: A feedwater controller for a flash type water tube boiler wherein feedwater flow through steam generating coils heated by combustion gases is compensated and adjusted, in order to provide proper combustion heat input over a broad range of boiler operating pressures and feedwater temperatures. Flowing feedwater affects combustion heat input through predetermined variations in fuel and air input to the boiler's burner. As disclosed, the first embodiment utilizes temperature and pressure compensating gates in a cylindrical orifice containing a spherical flow control member. Fuel/air control of the generator is provided through movement of the flow control member due to the forces induced by flowing feedwater. In an alternate embodiment, utilizes a piston in the feedwater flow path having a slotted cylindrical metering orifice attached thereto. Internal of the cylindrical orifice is a cooperating temperature compensated helical flow control member.
