Patent number: 6069434Abstract: A spark electrode assembly and method of assembling same is disclosed. A ceramic housing having a cylindrical passage provides clearance for a conductive metal electrode. The electrode has a tubular body with rod shaped wires inserted at each end, the wires extending outwardly from the tubular body at each of its ends colinearly. During assembly, the wires are crimped into the tubular body in such a manner that the tubular body is deformed outwardly forming bosses. The bosses are of such a size as to cause an interference fit between the tubular body and the housing passage so that the electrode is captured within the housing. An impact force on the electrode forces the tubular body to expand radially outwardly, thereby further engaging the ceramic housing for holding the electrode in the housing. That part of the electrode body that is not in contact with the housing still has ample room to expand within the housing.Type: GrantFiled: September 16, 1997Date of Patent: May 30, 2000Inventor: Gerald R. Patent number: 4944259Abstract: An ignition system of an engine has a coil which is spaced away from a spark plug to protect the coil from heat of a combustion chamber and combustion gas leakage. The electrical connections between the coil and spark plug of current design practice have not performed satisfactorily due to loosening of connections, absorption of energy within the connectors and the escape of electrical energy. The present ignition extender overcomes these shortcomings by resiliently biasing the extender between the source of high energy and the spark plug to provide a positive and reliable electrical connection therebetween. Further, the extender is of a relatively rigid construction so as to prevent bending and the problems that can result therefrom.Type: GrantFiled: December 5, 1988Date of Patent: July 31, 1990Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventor: Ronald D. Patent number: 4841925Abstract: An ignition system for hydrocarbon fuels based in part on the principle of "flame discharge ignition" of coupling ignition energy to the initial flame front plasma either as a "pulsing flame discharge ignition" or an "enhanced conventional discharge ignition". Electrical, geometrical, spark, and hydrocarbon flame front plasma discharge properties are taken into account and adjusted or tailored to create a flame discharge ignition process capable of igniting very lean mixtures. The system is further improved by modifying the fuel's flame front plasma properties by increasing the ratio of the carbon to hydrogen (C/H) content of the fuel and/or by using additives to further increase the flame front plasma density without reducing the plasma recombination coefficient.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 1987Date of Patent: June 27, 1989Assignee: Combustion Electromagnetics, Inc.Inventor: Michael A. Patent number: 4768477Abstract: The invention relates to a pressurized ignition system for an engine. The service life of the igniter for the engine and high altitude operation of the engine are substantially reduced due to arc-over between the terminal of the igniter and the metallic shell of the igniter or the nearest ground. The service life of the igniter and associated components are affected by the hot, contaminated environment in which they operate. The present pressurized ignition system includes a chamber around at least a portion of the igniter and the chamber pressurized to a value of, for example, about two atmospheres for suppressing arc-over. The chamber is pressurized by an air compressor drivingly connected to the engine with the air cooled by an engine aftercooler. Pressurizing the chamber prevents contaminates from entering or collecting in the chamber and affecting operation of the system.Type: GrantFiled: October 3, 1986Date of Patent: September 6, 1988Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventor: Ronald D. Patent number: 4715337Abstract: An ignition system of an engine has a coil which is spaced away from an igniter to protect the coil from heat of a combustion chamber and combustion gas leakage. The electrical connections between the coil and igniter of current design practice have not performed satisfactorily due to loosening of connections, absorbtion of energy within the connectors and the escape of electrical energy. The present ignition extender overcomes these shortcomings by resiliently biasing a first electrical conducting core into contact with a source of high energy and a second electrical conducting core into contact with an igniter and insulating the first and second electrical conducting cores and a biasing and providng mechanism from the surrounding environment by surrounding them with a first and second telescopingly arranged insulating members. When included in an engine, the extender is combined with a shield to further protect and increase the functional life of the components.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 1985Date of Patent: December 29, 1987Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Phillip B. Patent number: 4706639Abstract: An ignition module that is adapted to be secured to an internal combustion engine. The module has a plastic housing and a metallic cover that is adapted to be secured to an engine. A plurality of ignition coils are located within the housing and cover. The lower wall of the plastic housing has conductors embedded therein that electrically connect the secondary windings of the coils to electrical connector assemblies that are carried by the housing and which are adapted to slip over the spark plugs of an engine. The connector assemblies include means for making an electrical connection to the terminals of the spark plugs. The ignition coils have laminated cores that are clamped between the housing and the cover. The cores directly contact the metallic cover so that the cores have a heat transfer path to the cover and are electrically connected to the cover.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 1986Date of Patent: November 17, 1987Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: James A.
