Patent number: 10087899Abstract: In an intake manifold that has charge-motion-control valves (CMCVs), a gap exists between the flapper valves and the wall of the intake runners. Although the gap is maintained as small as practical, it cannot be eliminated because manufacturing tolerances and temperature variations to which the intake manifold is subjected must be accommodated to prevent binding of the flapper valves. Some flow makes an end run through the gap leading to undesirable fluid mechanics. Disclosed herein is a seal that is positioned to rest gently upon the flapper valve near the gap such that the gap is substantially sealed off while applying a modest force on the CMCV so that the actuation torque is minimally impacted. The seal has a press-in-place portion inserted into a pocket formed in the manifold to hold it in place and a lip portion that extends out from the press-in-place portion to obstruct the gap.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 2015Date of Patent: October 2, 2018Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLCInventors: Samuel Jeffrey Tomlinson, Christopher Snow, Christopher William Newman

Patent number: 8459226Abstract: An intake manifold is disclosed which has an upper shell portion having a first peripheral flange, a lower shell portion having a second peripheral flange, and at least one metallic post having a first plate and a second plate. The first and second peripheral flanges are friction welded and the first plate of the posts is friction welded to the upper shell portion and the second plate of the posts is friction welded to the lower shell portion. The upper and lower shells are made of a polymeric, or plastic, material. The metallic post is comprised substantially of aluminum or other suitable metals or alloys. The upper and lower shell portions define a cavity and a section of the post between the first and second plates traverses through the cavity.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 2010Date of Patent: June 11, 2013Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLCInventors: Mohammad Ali Moetakef, Steven Poe, Mario Joseph Felice

Patent number: 8360199Abstract: An integrated mass air flow sensor/broadband silencer assembly comprises a molded body having a plurality of walls formed therein. The molded body is over-wrapped with a layer of acoustic foam that, together with the plurality of walls, define a plurality of chambers within an interior volume of the assembly. A mass air flow sensor can be inserted into one of the chambers. The chambers are sized and spaced to provide a uniform velocity, low turbulence air flow to the sensor, and a minimally-restricted air flow to an internal combustion engine located downstream of the assembly.Type: GrantFiled: May 18, 2007Date of Patent: January 29, 2013Assignee: Mann + Hummel GmbHInventor: Stuart Miller
