Abstract: A bearing beam structure of an automotive internal combustion engine having a cylinder block formed with bearing sections, consists of a plurality of main bearing cap sections each of which associates with each cylinder block bearing section to rotatably support the journal of a crankshaft. First and second side wall sections are provided to be respectively connected with the opposite side portions of each bearing cap section to securely connect the bearing cap sections with each other. Additionally, the first and second side wall sections are respectively formed with first and second transmission installation sections to which a transmission housing is rigidly connected, thereby greatly improving the rigidity of the cylinder block entire while improving the connection-rigidity between the cylinder block and a transmission.

  • Patent number: 4508072
Abstract: A sealing device for a timing belt cover and an engine mount bracket comprises a rib formed on said engine mount bracket and a gasket having a lip of C-shaped section and a fixed portion continuous from said lip. The fixed portion of the gasket is attached to a portion of the timing belt cover surrounding an opening provided in said timing belt cover and said lip of C-shaped section of the gasket is contact with said rib of the engine mount bracket. Since the gasket is made of an elastic material other than sponge, e.g. rubber, it does not undergo a permanent deformation and causes no gap between said lip and said rib. Besides, since said lip of C-shaped section is easily deformed, there is no likelihood of an excessive load being applied to said timing belt cover.

  • Patent number: 4499869
Abstract: The engine block of a reciprocating internal combustion engine comprises cylinders, cylinder heads, pistons, connecting rods, a crankshaft, and bearings for said parts. The engine block is mounted in an outer pan in such a manner that the pan is insulated against a transmission of structure-borne sound from the engine block. A frame-shaped flexible seal is disposed between the engine block and the top edge portion of the outer pan and surrounds the engine block. The oil seal extends into grooves which are formed in the top edge portion of the outer pan and in the engine block. To ensure that the oil seal will produce a perfect sealing action in spite of relative motion of the engine block and outer pan and that the oil seal will not render the assembling and disassembling of the engine more difficult, the oil seal consists of fins, which are force-fitted in the grooves, and a thin flexible profiled connecting portion, which connects the fins.

Abstract: A prime mover (10) includes a housing (12), an end cover (18) secured to the housing (12), a driving shaft (22) mounted in the housing (12) and a driven member (49) mounted external of the end cover (18). A coupling mechanism (48) couples the driving shaft (22) to the driven member (49) to provide an arrangement that allows the removal of the driving shaft (22) without having to remove the end cover (18) and other associated elements. This provides a substantial time savings when removing a driving shaft (22) from a prime mover.

Abstract: A member adjacent to an engine, as an engine cover such as an engine head cover and oil pan and an air cleaner, is made of fiber layers by shaping organic or inorganic fibers mixed with a resin and its crosslinking agent while heating so as to cause a crosslinking reaction, thereby absorbing vibrations transmitted from an engine and remarkably decreasing noises resulting from surface vibrations of the member with the aid of the damping capacity of the fiber layers.

Abstract: In generator apparatus for the combined production of electrical energy and heat, of the type comprising a support casing housing an internal combustion engine with an air filter the inlet of which communicates with an aperture in a side wall of the casing, an electrical machine coupled to the engine, and electronic circuits for controlling the operation of the engine and the electrical machine, a covering and protecting element is fixable sealingly and removably to the outer surface of the side wall of the casing to define a region between the element and the wall. The electronic circuits are supported by at least one plate fixed to the outer surface of the side wall in the region between the wall and the covering and protecting element, and the element has at least one aperture through which this region communicates with the exterior. In operation of the apparatus, the electronic circuits are ventilated by air which is drawn in by the engine and flows into the region through said at least one aperture.
