Filtering Patents (Class 123/196A)
  • Patent number: 6143169
Abstract: Oil sump arrangements, such as transmission oil sumps and lubricating oil sumps used with the drive train of automotive vehicles are divided into an upper chamber and a lower chamber with a filter media disposed between the upper chamber and the lower chamber. The oil being circulated to a transmission or an engine pools in the lower chamber and is sucked by a suction tube out of the lower chamber for recirculation. In order to prevent the oil from pooling or accumulating under centrifugal force away from the suction tube so that air is ingested by the suction tube and the transmission or engine momentarily starved for oil, a plurality of baffle plates are placed in the lower chamber and extended parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle which is the normal direction of motion of the vehicle. The baffle plates obstruct movement of the oil away from the suction tube inlet.

  • Patent number: 6101996
Abstract: An oil filter unit comprising a housing (4) and a filter element (14) accommodated therein is fitted to an engine (1) via a bracket (3) having a cylindrical holder (5). The housing (4) is secured to the holder (5) by screwing a male screw (19) on its outer circumference to a female screw (17) formed in the inner circumference of the holder (5). A first cut-out (24) is formed across the female screw (17) and a second cut-out (23) is formed across the male screw (19). When these cut-outs (24, 23) meet together, they form a drain passage which drains the oil in the housing (4) to outside. With this construction, the oil in the housing is drained via a predetermined path and prevented from scattering around, when the filter unit is removed from the engine (1).

  • Patent number: 6045692
Abstract: An oil filter (10) includes a colloidal suspension (12) of PTFE particles less than 2 microns in size retained by capillary forces within the intricacies of the filter media (26) until the filter (10) is installed and engine oil flows at first engine start up following installation. The PTFE colloidal suspension (12) is completely and immediately released into the engine lubricating system when oil flow is initiated. The PTFE colloidal suspension (12) is introduced into the oil filter (10) as one of the last manufacturing steps. Oil filter (10) is disposed vertically with its outlet port (14) at the top. A quantity of the PTFE colloidal suspension is introduced into the outlet port (14) to initially fill a portion of the volume defined by a centertube (18) and a retainer (16). The PTFE colloidal suspension passes through openings (20,24) into contact with filter media (26).

Abstract: The invention is a spin-on type filter with a reclaimed permanent filter casing and permanent filtering mediums that are washable and reusable. There are three distinct progressive filtering systems that function simultaneously, but separately within one filter housing; one is the full flow filtering at 10 micron capability while the other is in its by-pass fine filtering mode at 1 to 3 micron filtering capability. In addition, a safety full flow filter can be activated to filter the return oil while the main fill flow medium is fouled. Each system can be implemented with multi mediums. The main body of the filter, which comprises the filter head and the mediums, can be separated easily for servicing from its casing which is designed to attach to the engine. Fine stainless steel cloths are being utilized as filtering mediums which can last the life of an engine. Further more, magnetic pieces are utilized to trap suspending metal filings in oil flow.

  • Patent number: 5647306
Abstract: An assembly of auxiliary apparatus for an internal combustion engine includes a coolant pump, an oil cooler device, and an oil filter unit combined and interconnected as a unitary unit for mounting on the internal combustion engine. The oil cooler device includes a housing having an oil pathway and a coolant pathway formed therein. The pathways are arranged to allow heat exchange between oil and coolant flowing through the pathways. The housing has a mounting surface for attachment to the internal combustion engine such that the oil pathway and the coolant pathway both extend beyond the mounting surface and into a recess of a wall of the engine. The assembly allows the engine envelope size to be reduced.

  • Patent number: 5566781
Abstract: Apparatus and methods for flushing and cleaning the oil strainer and crankcase of an internal combustion engine of a type having a removable full-flow oil filter. The oil filter is temporarily replaced with a cartridge which has at least one passage therethrough which will communicate with the discharge side of the engine oil pump but does not communicate with the normal outflow port of the filter apparatus. A second passage therethrough may communicate with the outflow port of the filter system but does not communicate with the discharge of the oil pump. In a preferred method, the inlet of the first passage may be connected to a source of pressurized fluid to force the fluid, in a direction opposite to normal flow, through the passage, the oil pump and the oil strainer to agitate and flush contaminants in the oil strainer and crankcase. The pressurized fluid and contaminants are drained from the crankcase after which the cartridge is removed, a new oil filter installed and clean oil added to the engine.

Abstract: A fluid container draining device for draining fluid from a fluid container, such as an oil filter, in a controlled manner. It has a front threaded screw with a sharpened drill tip. It has an internal channel communicating between an opening at the forward end of the screw and a rear region of the threaded screw. A fluid valve is positioned at the rear region of the screw in fluid connection with the channel. The fluid valve provides fluid flow control between the interior of the fluid container and the outside of the fluid container. The fluid valve has an internally threaded front region which screws into the externally threaded rear region of the screw, and an externally threaded rear region, onto which a fluid evacuation line is to be attached. A turning portion for turning the device into the wall of the container is located on the device.

Abstract: A method, composition and filter for reducing the presence of sludge or varnish precursors in a lubricating oil circulating within an internal combustion engine. The lubricating oil containing sludge or varnish precursors is contacted with discrete particles of an oil insoluble, oil wettable compound having an antioxidant functional group and/or a dispersant functional group, which are capable of complexing with sludge or varnish precursors. Preferably the compounds comprises a crosslinked amine having ethylene amine functionality. The starting polyethylene amines have a number average molecular weight in the range of about 100 to about 60,000, preferably 200 to 250 and are crosslinked with a silicon oxide, silane, silicate, epoxide, quinone, or phenol-formaldehyde crosslinking agent. • Patent number: 5467746
Abstract: An adapter system for use with an internal combustion engine flushing apparatus which permits connection to the crank case and the oil filter of internal combustion engines. A first adapter enables a conduit hose of a flushing apparatus to be connected with the drain plug port of an oil pan of the engine. In one form this first adapter fits within the drain plug port of internal combustion engines and a connector and upwardly directed hose are attached to the adapter. This adapter is intended to be permanently in place. In another form of the drain port adapter, the construction is relatively slim in overall depth thereby to facilitate location in awkward positions. An oil filter adapter includes adapter cap with an elongated threaded post which fits at the oil filter port leading to the oil filter adapter of the internal combustion engine. The cap for the adapter is connected to the post. The post is surrounded by a cylindrical ring which is part of the oil filter construction of the engine.

  • Patent number: 5460656
Abstract: Engine cleaning is affected at different times while the engine is running. Apparatus for cleaning internal combustion engines cyclically draws cleaning fluid from a reservoir by a pump, flushes the fluid through the block of the internal combustion engine, and returns the fluid to the reservoir. Tank selection valves alternately couple one of a pair of reservoir tanks to the pump, to the exclusion of another tank. One tank can be dedicated for use to clean gasoline powered internal combustion engines to preserve the characteristic color of the cleaning fluid, while the other tank can be utilized to clean diesel powered internal combustion engines. The system is operated through first flushing and soaking periods and through second flushing and soaking periods. A first tank in a pair is used to initially pump and recover cleaning fluid during the first flushing and soaking periods.
